The Edge of Goodbye

Chapter One

“Pop did you hear what I heard?” Wyatt shouts

Of course he hadn’t heard, he’s two Fleetwood Mac concerts away from being deaf.

“Did you read that book I gave you? The one called On the Road Again and not by Willie Nelson.

Wyatt turned away slowly “Not exactly” he said quietly

“Ok well this guy named Sal who is really Jack Kerovac goes on an adventure with his friends and meets strange people and does crazy stuff… that’s what we’re gonna do.” I tell him

“And where exactly are we going?”

“On an epic road trip from Washington to Manhattan New York.” I tell him

Wyatt just looked at me blinking occasionally. The blinks were clearly asking who are you and what have you done with my best friend? I sat up a little straighter and told Wyatt the plan.

“First we are going to Hollywood and to see Slab City, then to the Grand Canyon, Vegas, and the Rocky Mountains in Denver Colorado.”

Wyatt shakes his head approvingly, I smiled and continue.

“Then we are going to Des Moines, Iowa to experience the biggest state fair ever, then to Detroit, Niagara Falls and finally New York City.”

I look up into those green eyes and get lost for half a second. I know it sounds nuts but I don’t care, I grab the map out of my backpack and show him the route… our route.

The blue line is us” I say pointing

“Us?” he stuttered clearly still in shock

“Yes, us. You have to come remember I’m Bonnie to your Clyde.” I chuckle

“Mill, I can’t let a 16-year-old just run away with me. It won’t look good on my behalf” He tells me “It’s actually morally irresponsible.”

I laugh and put my hand “First off, neither of us are morally irresponsible. If anything, letting a sixteen-year-old girl go cross country by herself… now that’s morally irresponsible” I clap back at him.

Wyatt hangs his head.

“You’re right” he mumbles

“So…. Does that mean you’re coming?” I ask holding my breath

He looked to the ceiling, swallowing hard.

“Well” he starts, looking back at me.

“Well what?!” I shout kicking the counter hurting my toes.

Wyatt runs a hand through his chocolate brown hair then turns a sly eye my way.

“Well” he says very calmly… “Hell YES!”

I squeal with excitement and jumped on him hugging him tightly.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you so much” I say

I can’t believe he said yes. This is going to be the single greatest adventure we’ve ever gone on.

So road trips are kind of my favourite! And I was totally unaware that Willie Nelson wrote a book he's kind of one of my music heroes so I might have to go check it out!

On a side note I totally get you I've had three knee reconstructions and I swear I wore those compression socks every time like my life depended on it! I'm glad you're okay!
