Life, Cars and Zayn Malik... Wait What?!

Chapter 4: What?

Wow, Wednesday already. How time flies when you’re being a bored little shit. I really have to do something. For some reason I managed to get the entire week off of work. Don't even ask how. Because I have no idea. I work at a little café in town. I get whatever hours I want, and sometimes I get a lot of time off. It’s great that way, because when I have to be there for racing, I can just say that I can’t go.
I suppose I was thinking too much about what Zayn had called me. ‘Babes’. Really? of all the things that come to mind, you call me ‘babes’? couldn’t be ‘beautiful’ or ‘sexy’ or ‘baby’ or ‘Booker’ if you really had too. I like it when people call me the correct thing. Not ‘babes’. But I totally friend-zoned that bitch so we’re okay. Anyway, that was the moment I realised that my phone was ringing.
I picked it up, not looking at the contact. “Hello?” I asked, wondering who it was.
“Booker! I don't know what to do, like I was just talking to him and then he walked out after he told me that I told him about Charlotte and Melanie and then we apparently kissed-” that made me stop her.
“Codie!!!!” I heard silence. “Calm the f*ck down.”
“Uh-huh.” She mumbled.
“Now, what’s happening, in order, from the start.” I instructed.
“From how I remember it or how it actually happened?” she asked.
“How you remember it.” I answered.
“Okay. So I woke up this morning and found out that Dad is home early. Then he was introducing himself to the boys, and then I scared him and then I sat down on the couch. Then Louis sat next to me and called me ‘babe’ and I was all like ‘why are you calling me babe?’ and then he was al like ‘well, from what happened last night I thought we were together sort of thing’ and I was all like ‘what happened last night’ and, um, he was all like ‘we kissed’.” She paused to get her breath.
“Okay, so, I kind of sat there for a minute trying to remember this thing happening, and when I did the best I could come up with was ‘oh damn, we did didn’t we?’ and so then I blamed my messed up emotions because I had just told him about Charlotte and Melanie.”
“Oh hun…” I felt sympathy for her.
“And then I said that I didn’t know what it meant and shit like that. I crapped on for a while actually. Um, then I said how I don't really trust men anymore because of my last boyfriend.”
“Oh hun…” I said again.
“And then he gave me a week. To decide if I wanted to be with him or not.” She finished.
“So, why didn’t you tell him straight away that you don't-”
“Because I think I might.” She answered.
“Oh, that makes sense. Kinda.” I said, trying to comfort her.
“Yeah, not really.” she said quietly.
“Love, love is a… wait a minute. Restart. Hun, love is a weird thing. You can’t control it. I know it isn’t love yet, but you have that feeling that it could work between you two. I’ll support you either way. No matter what you do. I know you’ll make the right decision.” I gave her the pep talk she needed.
“Thanks. I’ll see you soon.” She said.
“See you soo-” huh “-wait what?” I questioned.
“Uh, we have shopping. Third Wednesday of the month.” She answered.
“Oh shit, that means I have to pick everyone up.” I ran my hand through my hair, and realised I would brush it. And change. “Codie, I’m gonna have to change.” I pleaded. “And I have to text everyone and-”
“Jamie.” She got my attention.
“Yes? What do you want to do for your birthday? I really need to know.” I completely changed the topic.
“I don't want to do anything. I want to sit on the couch and eat chocolate.” She answered.
“Codie, you know that’s not good enough. You are turning 22, okay? You must do something.” I said.
“Shut up. Just come here. I need to get out of this damned house.” She said.
“Of course. I’m on my way.” I said kinda depressed before I hung up. She really needs to do something for her birthday. texted everyone that I was picking them up within the next ten minutes. “Amelie!!! Get yo ass ready, we leave in five!!” I shouted.
“You say what now!” she ran to the lounge room, where I was located, with wet hair.
“Do something about your hair and get changed, we are leaving in five.” I instructed her. She screamed while running back to her room. Typical Amelie moment here. Within five minutes her hair was in a bun, with skinny jeans and a DC branded shirt. I had my hair nice and brushed, in a ponytail. I was wearing black skinny jeans, a white long sleeved shirt, which was a little tight around the chest area and a blue and black, plaid, flannelette shirt which was unbuttoned.
If you couldn’t tell, I was kinda going for the ‘daggy’ look. “Let’s go.” I said, grabbing my keys and swinging them around my finger. We locked up the house and got into my red buggy. Yeah, I have a buggy. It looked like a ladybug without the spots. I picked up Elysse, since she lived closest, and then Clarisse, before we drove to Codie’s. Wow, I actually do need to get a life.
I saw Codie running out towards us when I drove up her driveway. Louis waved at us and we all waved back. I got an angle where it looked like Codie was standing next to Louis. Damn, they would be a cute couple. They would be perfect together. From what I could tell they had similar personalities. Well, from what I could tell. And if Codie will be happy, I’ll be happy.
We all filed inside, and went upstairs to collapse on the black, material couches. “I’ll be back in a minute.’ Codie stated before she left the room. I’m fairly sure all of my friends and me were watching intently for her to leave. As soon as her blonde hair left the room, the girls sprang onto the floor and into a circle. I was with them.
“Oh my gosh, what are you guys getting for her birthday?!” I whisper shouted.
“I don’t know yet, I was hoping one of you guys knew, ‘cos I didn’t…” Elysse said.
“Don’t look at me, I don’t know her as well as you do.” Clarisse stated.
“Maybe she would like some money.” Amelie suggested.
“She already gets enough of that.” I got rid of that normal suggestion. Louis then jumped into our little circle.
“Light bulb” He said smiling. What is this boy planning? “When is her birthday?” He asked. Codie mustn’t of told them.
“On Thursday. Didn’t she tell you?” I answered.
“No, why would she?” he responded.
“Aren’t you two like… you know.” Clarisse said. I nearly face palmed. Oh god no.
“Together? No.” He replied.
“You should be. You two are like perfect for each other.” Clarisse stated.
“Really?” he asked like he was surprised. I half nodded. “Wait, Thursday?” he said quickly. We all nodded. “That’s tomorrow.” All of my girls tried looking at eachother at the same time, which was a stretch since there was four of us. Five including Louis.
“SHIT!” we all shouted in sync.
“What are we shitting?” Codie said walking back into the room.
“Nothing.” Louis said being very suss. “Apart from the fact you wouldn’t tell me it’s your birthday tomorrow.”
She looked at the ground. “Well, I didn’t want you spending money on me.” Louis just stared at her.
“Really? That’s the reason?” she nodded.
“I didn’t want to look like I was sucking the money out of you.” Louis shook his head.
“And so you thought I wouldn’t find out some other way? Well, clap clap for the handicap. I was going to find out sooner or later. I am Louis Tomlinson, I see, hear and know all.”
She laughed at that comment. “Alright the human brain.” She said to him.
“Only at midnight” He replied.
“Whatever.” She said getting annoyed.
“What do you want to do for your birthday?” I asked, changing the subject.
“I’ve already told you. Nothing. I want to sit at home, on the couch, and watch TV. That’s it. I don’t want any fancy parties, I don’t want any fancy presents.” She said the last line while looking at Louis.
He put his hands up, being innocent. Well, playing innocent anyway. “Can I have your number Jamie?” He asked. I gave him a death look of ‘why the utter f*ck would you want my number?’ he responded with a look of ‘you’ll find out soon’.
“Yeah, sure. As long as we keep it less than G rated.” I stated.
“Not for that reason.” He said. I told him, and he told me his. He must have this planned completely.
“Alright, it’s the third Wednesday of the month. Everyone knows what that means.” They all grabbed their wallets and held them in the air.
“SHOPPING!” They all screamed in sync. Codie ran out of the room, most likely to get her money.
“Alright guys, girls. This is the plan, get her a beautiful dress, party dress, cocktail dress, I don’t care. Just get her a dress. Get yourselves one as well. I’ll text Jamie the details, I have some planning to do.” When Codie came back we were all sitting in a semi-circle looking suss.
“We ready? I’m driving.” She said.
“Shotgun!” Amelie shouted. Zayn then walked into the room, seeing me. As I stood up. I could practically feel his eyes wandering up and down my body. He had a smirk on his face. I pulled the flannelette shirt over my chest when his eyes stared there. Bitch, they are not for you. Or anyone at the moment.
The others left the room and as I walked past him I bumped his shoulder, roughly. “Quit gawking at me, you look like a fish.” I said angrily, walking away.
“Jamie!” he shouted. Could he not tell I was pissed at him.
“What?” I asked, walking down the stairs heavily, anger probably ebbing off of me.
“Sorry. Just Perrie and I ended ages ago.” That’s not gonna help your situation. Wait a minute…
“Who the hell is Perrie?” I asked, but I didn’t get an answer as Amelie grabbed my arm and pulled me away. We got into Codie’s fluorescent blue Ferrari we drove off to Rundle Mall. I waited, and waited for something to happen. I heard a ‘pop’ sound, signalling my phone received a message. I went to get it out of my pocket when I freaked, it wasn’t there. But then I realised it was in my bag. “BINGO!” I shouted, and I felt the car swerve.
“JESUS!” Codie shouted in response.
“No, just Jamie, but I’m told the resemblance is uncanny.” We all burst out laughing. I don't even realise how that was so funny. We all calmed down and I finally read the message from, quote, ‘Louis the Swag Masta from Doncasta’. God damn. Anyway, I found out what we should be shopping for.
“So, we are shopping for dresses people!” I whisper shouted, but louder than a whisper.
“Okay… wait, what for?” Codie asked.
“Let me find out.” I stated, texting the question back to Louis. When I heard the pop I looked straight back at the screen. “HEY! WHY DIDN’T I COME UP WITH THAT?!”I forgot Codie was actually driving, and felt the car stop moving. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. It was such a good idea, I don't know why I didn’t come up with it earlier.
“REALLY! AGAIN WITH THE SHOUTING?!” She yelled back.
“Sorry, I was just checking Facebook and they had this really cool idea. Anyway, we need dresses because we’re gonna go clubbing tomorrow!” Good cover up Jamie. Good cover.
“For my birthday?” Codes asked quietly.
“Yeah, well you need to do something apart from taking care of One Direction for another day. We have to find you an amazing dress for you, and heels and, oohhh, you’re going to look beautiful girl.” I stated.
“Whatever you say Booker.” She said.
“It goes Tinkerbelle. Whatever I say goes. You should know that by now.” I said, stating the obvious.
“Do I really need heels? The last time I wore them was… was… was ages ago.” God damn Codie. Just shut up and co-operate.
“No, only about a week. My party remember? Or did you forget that I’m older by a week?” I said.
“You get my gist.” Codie said, starting the car again.
***
We finally got there and looked through all the shops. Amelie had a knee length silver and green dress. Elysse had a blood red and black short and sleeveless dress. Clarisse who looked good in anything had a floor length dress of non-metallic gold. They all had matching heels and jewellery. I had a beautiful dress that faded from a pale blue to dark blue. Codie still had nothing, and was staring blankly at a dress in front of her.
“What about this one?” I asked, grabbing a blinding fluorescent dress.
“Sure, but I need a pair of matching sunnies.” She said sarcastically.
“You love bright colours though…” I said, looking towards the ground.
“Yeah, when their not a full dress, from the sleeves to the floor!” she shouted. Okay she does have a point, considering it was, fluoro green from top to bottom. “Look, there’s obviously nothing here so we’ll drive to Marion and look in there for my dress okay?” I nodded as the others returned from there adventure to get food.
“Sausage roll for Booker and a meat pie with cheese for Tinkerbelle” I took my sausage roll gladly, being starving from shopping for many hours.
“I don’t want it anymore” Codie said, looking at her pie. God damn it Codie!
“I did not pay 4 dollars for you to just throw that away!” Amelie practically screamed at her.
“Look, I don’t feel too well. I’ve been walking around aimlessly for what…” She checked her phone. “Three hours, and haven’t got a thing yet. You guys are completely set and I got nothing, and it’s my birthday tomorrow.”
The rest of us all had a quiet conversation between ourselves, making a decision on whether we could leave or not. Clarisse stepped forward. “One more shop, and if you can’t find anything in there we’ll go home okay?” she had a small smile on to make Codie feel a little better.
“Really? Why can’t we go home now?” Codie pleaded like a five year old.
“One last shop, I promise.” Clarisse grabbed her hand and she was pulled along for another few minutes of torture. We went out after thanking the shop owner and buying a packet of mints, all for Codie, and continued our hike. The packet of Eclipse mints was gone in about five minutes. We walked past a bin and Codie threw the mint tin in it. She finally grabbed the pie and attempted to eat it. She sat down at a table.
“Come on Tinkerbelle.” They all said in sync.
“Give me ten minutes, I need a break from the smell of newness and clothes.” She started eating her pie as we all sat around the table. She ate it quickly and started a conversation. “So, Amelie, how’s your life partner going?”
“You’re the one the one who lives with him!” Amelie screamed back. Well, that was uncalled for.
“Geez, just making a joke” Codie said innocently.
“You just shut up about us okay, like you can talk anyway. Your relationships never moved at any speed. I at least get on with mine. So don’t say anything!” Okay, Amelie, calm your shit.
“At least they all know what my name is. Your so called ‘boyfriend’ couldn’t tell your name if his life depended on it!” I hated it when people picked a fight over a joke.
“Well, at least I’m not on and off with my guy!” wow, that did not have anything to do with Codie and Louis. Oh, wait, they did kiss and then Codie was all like ‘actually no’.
“Just face it Amelie he’s not interested in you, he just wants-”Oh Codie, you should learn to keep quiet.
“That’s quite enough girls.” I said, cutting Codie off so she wouldn’t regret it later.
“Let’s just move to the next shop shall we?” Clarisse said as she stood up with Elysse and I.
“Whatever.” Amelie said as she stood up and stomped to the car. Man. This was weird.
“Over reaction much?” Codie said, and I agreed with her. We walked to the last shop and before Codie even walked in I think she knew she would find what she wanted. Well, that’s judging from the way she bee-lined for the window that was displaying the dress and put her face on it. I think I heard her say ‘perfect’ but I couldn’t be sure.
She walked in, well, ran being very suss. We all followed and saw there was only one of the dresses left. Another person had their eye on it. I saw the colour on the hanger and knew it was her size. The other chick looked the same size as Codie. This was not the first time Codie had been in a shop showdown. Most of the time she would win. She knows that in order to get what you want, you must distract your opponent. She stepped towards it, but the other girl was closer and also took a step towards the dress. It got too close for Codie to risk another step.
“Is that a goat?” She asked pointing at the wall. The other girl fell for it and Codie leaped towards the dress and grabbed it before running back towards us. “I GOT IT!” She screamed at the top of her lungs. “I’m going to try it on, then I will find some heels, and everything will be perfect.” She walked to the change rooms and put the dress on. she looked damn good in it. The dress was purple and went over one shoulder. It was tight ‘till her hips, then it became a poofy skirt. It went to the ground and a bit extra for heels.
She changed back before she found a pair of heels that went from deep purple at the tips to silver at the top. “Perfect” She said as she found a bracelet. It was purple and was fairly chunky. “Guys, this is amazing.” Elysse jumped around like an idiot, but we were used to that. She bought the dress and accessories, and we left to go back to the car.
