Chapter 2: The Gossip Red of Oakdale High

The brunette wakes up just before her alarm clock goes off. She sits up and rubs her eyes just like every morning and finds herself to be quite awake. That’s probably one of the best benefits of being as athletic as she is. She’s been getting up all summer for practice and to go on her morning jog. Phin never has to worry about being late to school, and she’s even early most of the time. It gives her plenty of time to do any homework she didn’t finish because of a game or talk to people other than Kati. The short hazel-eyed girl normally doesn’t get to class until right before the bell rings. Her friend is nowhere close to being a morning person like she is.
Phin gets out of bed and goes over to her dresser like she always does each morning. Another thing that she does that Kati doesn’t is pick her clothes out for the next day. That, and she also takes a shower at night and not in the morning. The brunette takes her clothes off of the piece of furniture and starts to get changed. As she does this, she hears the water being run in her parents’ bathroom. Her mom is up just like normal to go to work. Just like her best friend, her mother also likes to take her showers in the morning. Seriously, is Kati secretly her sister?
The brunette chuckles at the thought. Although it would be nice, it can’t be true. Kati looks and acts so much like her dad, and it would be impossible for her mom to have had both children because of their birthdays. What would make more sense would be that they are cousins and her mom is related to Kati’s dad, but again, that can’t be true. It all makes Phin think about how she wished she had a sibling. She’s an only child just like her friend. That’s why they have always been so close. They are each other’s sibling that they’ve always wanted. Of course, they don’t argue like it. There really is just two things that they disagree on.
When Phin gets to the kitchen, she grabs a bottle of water and an apple for the small walk to school. The last thing she grabs before heading out of the door is her purse and her book bag. Since it’s the first day of school, she has to use the old thing in order to get all of her notebooks, binder, folders, and paper to school. The beginning of the year and the end of the year are the only times she ever uses it. That’s why it’s still in good condition for being four years old.
The walk to school isn’t as boring as you may think. Exercise relaxes the brunette quite nicely. It’s almost like meditating. That’s how she’s able to be relaxed while thinking about that blond boy from yesterday. There is a very high chance that he will be there. She really just wants to walk up to him and demand he tell her why he was watching them, but Phin knows that that won’t get an answer out of him. She just needs to stay calm and relax like she is doing right now. Perhaps she’ll tell her mom about all of this after she finds out. She doesn’t want Phin to tell her the story until it starts getting good. Phin doesn’t really know what she means by that, but that’s probably the only thing that is really going to happen.
Just as she thought, she got to school early again. She walks through the doors and starts making her way towards her locker. The halls are mostly empty. There are only some teachers there (most are in their rooms) and about twenty students. Phin just loves that her school doesn’t keep the kids locked out ‘til there is ten minutes before class begins. They are allowed in at a certain time, but that time is so early that you wouldn’t know it existed. That’s mostly because the teachers have to get there earlier than normal as well. Phin would know.
As the brunette approaches her locker, she spots a familiar girl with dirty blonde hair. The blonde turns to look at her with her brown eyes and gives her a little smile. Phin goes over to her locker and opens it. One of the best things about her dad is the fact that he already gave her her new schedule and her locker info. She didn’t even need to step foot into the gym to pick up it up. Life is good. Life is good.
“Hey, Veronica,” Phin says to her blonde friend. “I have a job for you.”
“Wow,” the girl responds. “It’s the first day, and you already have a job for me. Who do you want information about? I’m sure it’s not about any of your teammates like normal.”
Veronica Small is the go to person when it comes to gossip. The sophomore is not a gossiper herself, but she has a good ear for it. If you want to know something about someone, she can figure it out for a small fee unless you’re friends with her like Phin is. Well, Phin isn’t just a friend. She’s more like family. Relationships was how they met, and although they are completely different, they became good friends. Kati compares Veronica to Red from Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. (Kati likes to read a lot.)
“I want information on a new blond boy. I’m pretty sure that he’s going here. He’s Irish, so it won’t be that hard to figure out which one he is. Tell me all you can about him at the end of the day. Don’t mention that I want to find out about him either. I’m not in the mood to become apart of all that gossip.”
“I’ll see what I can do. Oh, and can you do a favor for me?”
“Sure.”
“I talked to the principal this weekend when I ran into her at the store about this club that I wanted to create. She said I could if I could get people to join. I have to have so many people in a month. It’s not a big number, but I also want to make this club as epic as can be. It’s a fashion club.”
“That’s different. Sure, I’ll tell a couple of people.”
Phin goes to her first class and all of her other classes before lunch just like she has ever year before this one. When lunch finally comes around, she spots Kati sitting at a table already since she always packs. After getting her food, the brown-eyed girl makes her way over to her friend and sits down. It isn’t too long before Veronica and Jason join them. Now there is just one person missing...
“Hey baby,” a very familiar voice says from behind Phin. He kisses her cheek before sitting down with the rest of them.
His name is Clark Brown, known by his teammates as “Clark Bar”. Why is he called that? Well, that’s his favorite candy bar, but his appearance as well. His hair is the color of chocolate, and his eyes are gold like the inside of them. Clark is the most popular boy in school because he’s the star of the varsity boys’ soccer team. It’s like him and Phin were destined to get together. Well, the fact that the whole school kept telling them that is probably the biggest reason why they did.
“I can’t wait for the game today,” he says. “You’re going to do so well.” Phin just gives him this look. “Oh, and I’m sure Kati will do great as well.” The girls smile. “Bro, are you and Veronica going to the game tonight?”
Jason frowns slightly. He’s not very fond of his older brother. “Actually, we’re going on a date tonight.”
“Why don’t you take her on a date to the game? You’ve done it before.”
“Yeah because Mom and Dad made me come to your game because they said that I need to support you more. It was also the worst date ever. We’re not going to the game. We’re going to go see a movie and then maybe go to dinner.”
“Well, it’s your loss just like the opposing team today.”
“Whatever.”
“Um, Clark?” Phin says.
“Yeah?”
“We actually haven’t really gone on a date in awhile.”
“Yes we have.”
“I mean a real date that doesn’t involve soccer.”
“Oh, I guess I can fit it into my schedule. You know how my dad is.”
“Yes, I know.”
“Hey, you still aren’t upset about me going to college next year on a full scholarship, are you?”
“I’m over it. We can still stay in contact until I go to the same school as you.”
“With your skills and grades, you can get into any school you want, but mostly you can get into the school that I’m going to.”
“Exactly.”
The whole lunch really just consists of Phin talking with Clark, Veronica talking with Jason, and Kati looking at someone at another table. It’s just like how it was last year, but Phin isn’t really that happy about it. Well, she’s obviously not happy with Kati still not having the guts to ask the guy she likes out or even tell them who she likes, but she hasn’t really been that happy with Clark lately. If you look at them, they seem perfect together, but they are kind of too perfect for each other. They are too similar, and Clark seems to love soccer more than her. Phin loves soccer more than him, but that’s because she actually doesn’t love him. She doesn’t really know what she thinks of him. She only tells him that she loves him because she doesn’t want him to get upset. Being with him is getting boring, and maybe that’s why she wants to know about this blond boy. The whole thing seems really interesting. She’s not looking to be with him. He comes off as a dick anyway. She just needs something different in her life. Everything is too much the same.
When the end of the day comes, Phin can’t be happier. The game is now just hours away. The brunette goes to her locker to put her new textbooks away along with the folders and notebooks that she carried around just in case. The brown-eyed girl takes her book bag out and then closes it. She’s about to walk off, but then she remembers that she gave Veronica a job. No one is paying any attention to her, so she just stands there and waits for her friend to get there. When she does, the blonde goes over to her locker and starts to put her stuff away as well.
“I’ve talked to some people like you wanted me to,” Phin tells her soft enough so no one will hear them. Although, almost everyone has left by now anyway. Phin’s dad gives her a ride home, and Veronica walks home with Jason, who wants the time to last forever because he really doesn’t want to go home.
“Thanks. Now, here’s what I found out...”

Notes

Sorry this took so long. Video games... I swear, they just never let you go. I've had this half written, and I finally made myself finish it. I was going to finish it on Thursday or Friday, but I spent the weekend with my friend, and I think I played Hearthstone of Thursday.
I wonder what Veronica found out. Oh, we just finished that book in class, so I wanted to compare her to Red.
Anyway, I hope you liked it!
