Chapter 1: Blond Boy at the Field

A hand with short finger-nails slams down on the button of the noisy alarm clock. She sits up slowly and yawns before her eyelids slowly start to rise, revealing her chestnut eyes with an oak center. Joy fills them when she realizes what day it is. It’s the last day of practice before the first game for the varsity girls’ soccer team, otherwise known as the best thing in the world, well, if you don’t count her family. OK, maybe she loves soccer just a tad bit more.
The sixteen-year-old girl springs out of bed and quickly makes her way over to her dresser. On top of the tan wood is the outfit that she had picked out the night before, a green tank top and a pair of black shorts. Green and blue make up most of her wardrobe because they are her favorite colors. Why are they her favorite colors? Green and blue are the colors of the Oakdale Sea Monsters, also known as the best school in the world. She’s gone their all her life and has loved every second of it. The school is known for it’s soccer, and she just happens to be the star of the varsity girls soccer team. She became that her freshman year when her skills put her not only to into varsity but to the top of it as well.
After grabbing the clothes along with a pair of underwear and a clean bra, the brunette starts to change. There is no point in getting a shower when she’s just going to get all sweaty anyway. Showering is better after practice especially when you just want to relax your muscles. Her friend, Kati, really likes showers after practice. Kati likes to complain about her muscles hurting even though she’s the star defensive player since last year and doesn’t have to nearly do as much running as the offensive players. During the games, she just stands there. Although, she wouldn’t change Kati for the world.
With her clothes now on, she grabs a pair of white ankle socks and puts them on along with her blue sneakers. The last thing she grabs before leaving the room are her cleats. Hell would break loose if she forgot them. She starts heading down the stairs but remembers that she forgot her hair tie. She goes right back up and puts her hair up before going ahead and brushing her teeth. Her mom keeps telling her that she needs to do it more even though she’s going to be eating an apple right afterward. Her legs carry her back down the stairs and over to the kitchen area. The brunette grabs three apples and two water bottles. The water and two of the apples make their way into the bag that she grabbed, and the last apple makes it’s way into her mouth.
“I see that you’re ready,” her mom says as she makes her way over to her.
The resemblance of the mother and daughter is extraordinary. The daughter looks just like the mother did when she was her age, well, except that she is more fit. She got her love of sports from her dad. Her mother has long and flowing bark-colored hair and the exact same eyes as her daughter’s. In her right hand are her keys to her car, and in her left hand is her purse.
“It’s the last day of practice before our first game,” the sixteen-year-old smiles. “Of course, I’m ready. Kati and I want to get there early. We want to be the first ones there, so we can talk some and then continue to show those new girls how serious we are.”
Her mother chuckles. “You two are always trying to show up your teammates.”
“Well, we have to make sure that we’re the best even if Kati is pretty lazy.”
“That she is, so are we going to leave now?”
“Yeah, I’m going to finish this in the car.”
The daughter follows her mother outside and over to the car. They get in and start off towards the field. The young brunette is so excited for this season. The first game just happens to be tomorrow which is also the first day of school. The coach wanted to make sure that they got one more practice in if the parents and team members were fine with it. Everyone was. Soccer is the thing that is always on everyone’s mind. Mostly it’s the girls. The varsity girls’ team is the one that always makes it far. The boys aren’t that good, so no one really wants to watch them play.
As soon as the car stops, the brown-eyed girl is saying bye to her mother and getting out. She already sees Kati sitting on the bench waiting for her. Her legs take her over to her fast, and she sets her stuff down. Surprisely, the hazel-eyed girl isn’t even looking at her friend. She’s sitting there, staring at the other side of the field where the stands are. The offensive star raises her eyebrow at her short and brunette friend. Her hand waves it front of her which finally gets Kati to snap out of it.
“What are you looking at?” the taller brunette chuckles.
“Well, it’s just that there is this boy standing over there by the stands watching us. He got here right after I did, and he just keeps looking this way. I don’t know who he is or why he’s watching us, but it’s kind of weird.”
Brown eyes look over at the stands, and sure enough, there is a boy standing there. From what she can see, he looks to be about there age or a year younger. His hair is blond and he’s wearing a blue hoodie with blue jeans. It doesn’t look like there is an expression on his face. He’s just watching them.
“I have no idea who he is,” the taller girl says. “I’ve never seen him before, and you know that everyone knows everyone.”
“Phin, will you go and see what he wants?”
“I would, but I think I hear another car.”
Sure enough, when Phin turns around, she sees the coaches car along with two more cars that have team members in them. They get out of their vehicles and make their way over to the bench. None of them are paying attention to their audience. It’s not like it really matters though. Phin will talk to this guy when practice ends.
“I see that you two are here early again,” the blonde coach that is in her thirties says as she makes her way over to them. “Are you two ready for the game tomorrow?”
“I’m sure we are,” Phin says, “but you can never be too sure. I’m ready to get this practiced started!”
“That’s the spirit.”
Their morning practice lasts about an hour and a half. By the time they are done, Phin has drunk all of the first bottle and about a third of the second. Plus, all of them are tired and sweaty. The brown-eyed girl grabs her bottle and starts to take another sip. She watches as all of the girls get picked up. It turns out that Phin’s mom has forgotten to come again. She’s just as forgetful as her best friend.
“Can I borrow your phone real quick?” Phin asks Kati.
“Sure. I still can’t believe that you never bring yours.”
“It could be distracting.”
“Yeah, but it would come in handy if I wasn’t here and your mom forgot.”
“Oh well.”
“Hey, are you going to question that guy? I would, but I’m not the best at socializing, and I know that you can kick his ass if he tried anything.”
“Yeah, just let me finish this text, and I’ll go right over. And... done. I’ll tell you about how it went tomorrow at school.”
“KK. Bye!”
“Bye!”
Phin and Kati wave bye as Kati gets into her mom’s car. Now that her friend is gone, she can focus on this weird kid watching them. She starts making her way across the field towards the guy that is turning to leave. She quickens her run and gets to him fast since he was going slow as if he’s in no hurry.
“Hey!”
The mysterious boy turns around to face her. Now, she can see him clearly. He looks rather boyish and cute, and he’s probably only an inch taller than her. The thing that sticks out the most is his eyes. They are this beautiful blue with an almost goldish color just around the pupil. He seems to have this really cute and innocent feel to him. In fact, that’s the only thing that comes to mind when it comes to describing him, cute and innocent.
“Who are you, and why were you watching us practice?” Phin does her best to not sound mean. She says it calmly with a tad bit of curiosity.
The blond’s face grows cold. She didn’t even know such a boyish face could even do that. “Leave me the feck alone,” he says with an Irish accent before starting to walk off again. Wow. So much for him being innocent.
The brunette gets mad at this. Phin is pretty stubborn and is known for a having a bit of a temper. “What the fuck? Who the fuck do you think you are? You can’t just fucking watch girls run around kicking a ball and act like this when someone calmly questions you about it.”
She goes over to him and grabs his wrist before turning him around. His face goes from cold to angry. He looks like he may be even more angry than the brunette. He pulls his wrist away from her as if she has some kind of disease.
“I told you to leave me the fuck alone, you bitch!”
The blond starts walking away again but notices this time that the brown-eyed girl is following him, trying to grab his wrist again. He starts running from her. Phin’s speak quickens too. Although being the fastest on the team, she can’t catch him. It’s partly because she’s tired and partly because this kid is pretty fast. Of course being the way Phin is, she just tells herself it’s because she’s tired.
Phin looks around and sees that she chased him all the way across the park that sits right beside the soccer field and even halfway across the open field as well. Knowing her mom is either almost there or already there, she starts to make her way back. As soon as she gets there, she sees her mom sitting in her car, waiting for her. Phin jogs over to get her stuff and then gets in the car. The sixteen-year-old gulps down the rest of the water.
“Where’d you go?” her mother questions but not in anyway mean. “I got here, and you weren’t in sight. I figured that you just went for a little walk while you waited for me, but you just gulped down all of your water and it looks like you were running.”
“It’s a long story, and I’m tired. I’ll tell you about it later. Right now, I just want to get a shower and mentally prepare myself for the game tomorrow.”
“Alright then. I can wait. Besides, this story just might get better if I give it some time. I love a good story.”
Sometimes Phin really wonders if Kati and her were switched at birth...
