Effie's destiny

Chapter 7

Previously on Effie's Destiny:

“My flat?” asked the young girl.

“I thought you were not sleeping with me?” teased Liam.

“I’m not. I just need comfy clothes and you said you wanted to know me. I live less than 10 minutes away from here” replied Effie waving at a cab, telling him her address once they got in.

“As I said fascinating” mumbled Liam when sitting next to her looking at London’s streets as the car drove to Effie’s.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

30th-31st August 2011
Earl’s Court Road, London
Effie’s loft

Liam didn’t let Effie pay for the taxi and she was groaning when getting out of the car. That’s how she is and the fact Liam insisted despite the fact he went the opposite direction from his own flat. She had no chance winning this argument so she gave up.

“I can pay a taxi fare sweetheart, it’s not as if I don’t own a successful boxing and fitness studio” said Liam with a smile as he joined Effie once out of the car.

“Arghh you’re so annoying” said Effie nodding and smiling at the doorman leading the way to the elevator. She had been living there for less than a month and he was the first one apart from Lou and her family to come to her place. She pressed “PH” for penthouse and turned to Liam. “You’ll soon find me less fascinating when I’ll keep trying to pay for everything” she said with a cheeky smile making Liam laughs.

“So… the penthouse uh” said Liam “I’m going to be around here quite often I think” he added winking at Effie who rolled her eyes smiling at the same time. Once the elevator came to a halt she took her keys and opened the door to her flat.

“You better not… I’m just lucky. My parents are very generous with my brothers and I” she shyly said. Yes she had money and yes she likes to buy expensive things but she’s not a spoilt brat who disrespects people when they don’t go her way. “Would you like to drink something?” politely asked the lovely brunette while getting rid of her shoes and putting her clutch on the kitchen bar.

“Something strong if you have” said Liam whose mood had changed slightly .

“Is vodka okay? I have apple juice to go with it too” she replied bringing a small tray with two glasses and the bottles to the lounge area along with some ice.

“Pure with ice will do” he replied monotonously.

“Uhm.. Ok… Liam… Are you alright? You have been drinking a lot already, do you think it’s a good idea?” asked the young girl looking at Liam slightly worried about his mood swing.

“I’ll be on my own anyways. It won’t matter whether I’m wasted or not”. Liam helped himself with a large glass of vodka with some ice cubes. Effie just poured some apple juice in her glass. She never drinks a lot and knowing that she would train the day after made her refrain her drinking.

“That’s not a reason. You’re working tomorrow and I need my coach…” dared Effie looking at Liam. She didn’t want to sound like annoying or controlling, she just cared.

“You… Fuck… Sorry Effie” said the young man putting his drink down suddenly disgusted. “I’m going to go” he added standing up.

“You don’t have to you know. I thought you wanted to know me?!” pouted Effie trying to lighten the mood.

“Effie… Damn how do you do this? I’ve known you for less than 24 hours and you have managed to spike my curiosity and calm my weird mood” said Liam whose mood had shifted again. God what’s the deal with him? He’s like a girl on her period.

“Alright Liam just lie down. I’m going to put my glasses on and we’re going to start your therapy and you will tell me all about your mood swings” replied the girl with a wide smile taking the bottle of vodka and emptying the glass in the sink. She poured some apple juince and went back to sit next to Liam.

“Why are you boxing?” he asked out of the blue.

“Because I like it, it’s good to keep me in shape, my brothers and Lou are boxers and when I train I feel in control” she simply answered.

“In control? You are the first one to say that but I couldn’t agree more. Fighting is a matter of precision, throwing punches make you lose control>”

“Louis was right, you know your job… I can’t wait to kick your ass Mr Payne” said Effie with a cheeky grin.

“I don’t fight. Not anymore. I just coach now” Liam said as if it wasn’t important.

“Oh… But I thought… Sorry” Effie felt bad all of a sudden.

“Don’t worry. Just a bad accident a couple of years ago. It’s not your fault.” Liam’s voice was strong, reassuring and instantly Effie felt better.

“I had an accident too but it was more than 10 years ago.” If Liam was being honest with her she could be with him too.

“Oh… Do you want to tell me more?” He wasn’t forcing her but you could tell he wanted to know more about her and her story. She is beautiful but there is so much more behind her beauty.

“When I was 11 I was playing with Lou. We were being fools and I fell on a metal bar. I fell backward and it went straight through me. It touched my spine but didn’t cut it or damaged it that much. They have managed to remove it but a little piece of it remains in me. I was in a wheelchair for almost a year and a half.” Effie was looking at an invisible point behind Liam, her voice didn’t break, it was as if she didn’t have any emotions or feelings about this.

“I’m sorry Effie. They have never removed the last bit? Don’t you feel it?” Liam was more shocked at cold and emotionless she was rather than what she had told him.

“They have never tried when I was young and now I just live with it. If I exercise too much I sometimes feel numbness in my legs but it goes quickly with some rest. I can practise boxing with no pain whatsoever” she added not fazed by her words. Liam still couldn’t understand her. She was so hard to figure out. She clearly wasn’t like any other girls, not a badass but not an emotional mess either, just indifferent. “I told you about my accident. Will you tell me yours? We could compare scars” said Effie with a laugh confusing Liam even more.

“Two years ago I was boxing professionally and the guy who lost against me didn’t handle it very well. He stabbed me in the leg and killedmygirlfiend” Liam said rushing at the end hoping Effie wouldn’t understand. But she was a girl and girls have invented the “I rush and don’t breathe hoping you won’t understand”. As the beautiful brunette realised his words she gasped putting her hands on his leg but he jolted up. “I better get going before you give me that pity look”.

“No… Don’t! You know what? I’m going to get changed and when I come back we’ll compare out scare and will move on ok?” interrupted Effie who didn’t want Liam to go for several reasons. She went to her bedroom, dropped the dress on the floor and got changed into comfy shorts and tee-shirt. She took her time, putting the dress back on the hanger, taking her make up off and brushing her teeth. She decided to leave her hair loose and after 10 minutes she made her way back to her lounge. Liam was still there looking at photos of her and Louis and also of her family. He was now smiling. Talk about mood swings.

“Sorry it took so long. I couldn’t get this necklace out. Louis put it on but I don’t know how he did it” she giggled remembering the past few hours.

“You two are really close aren’t you?” asked Liam coming back to her.

“You ask too many questions Payne. Show me you scar!” Effie tried changing subject not willing to talk about Louis and their odd relationship.

“No.” Quiet but firm answer.

“Alright then, let’s make a deal. I show you mine and you show me yours.” Effie didn’t wait for his answer, got up and lifted her tee-shirt up to her where her bra was; she pulled down her shorts slightly and turned her back to show Liam. He could see a small white scare, maybe an inch and a half wide in between her dimples. She turned her head away from Liam’s feeling all of a sudden very self-conscious and after less than a minute she pulled her tee-shirt back down. “Your turn Payne” she said. Surprisingly he got up and took his trousers down revealing a long and thin scar on his right thigh. Fascinated by it Effie slowly trailed her fingers on it but Liam caught her wrist with force pushing her away.

“Liam… Liam… You’re hurting me” she shrieked almost shouted.

Realising what he had done Liam let go of her wrist, put his trousers back and rushed to the main door. He only stopped when he felt a soft hand on his back.

“Don’t go. I’m sorry I shouldn’t have” whispered Effie.

“Don’t… I should have warned you. Only the guys know I can’t stand being touched there. Sorry Effie” he turned facing the young girl. She was soothing and scaring him at the same time. He had never opened to a girl since his girlfriend’s death. He is quite happy with one night stands or short, meaningless stories. This girl had a weird power on him. No wonder why Louis was head over heel for her.

“Come… Let me tell you embarrassing things about Louis.” She took his hand leading him to the sofa. Liam smiled mesmerised by this strong, independent and beautiful girl. Tonight had only made his fascination go stronger…
