Something Good Can Work: Book Two - ON HOLD INDEFINITELY-

Start Again

“Elliot, honestly. You promised you’d help me study, stop being so charming.” I say with a cheesy grin as I try to stifle my laughter from his silly comedic commentary on the literature we were trying to consume.
“It’s so hard to take it seriously, this charm is merely a side effect.” He said as he smoothed his silky blond hair back, giving me his best attempt at a smolder. I finally let out the laughter, pushing his shoulder playfully. He really was a ham. He had taken to me immediately, I was new and mysterious and that was probably the only good factor I had going for me. I definitely didn’t meet the standard look of the community, for instance; Chanel was not in my current wardrobe.
“You have to take it seriously it is serious. It’s Sylvia Plath and she was a literary genius. If I want to pass this quiz, I need you to help me get through this seriousness, because while serious it can be particularly boring.” I said with another giggle, it was hard not to laugh when I was with Elliot. He is by far, the silliest bloke I’ve ever met.
“Fine, but let’s get food first. I’m tired of being at school and you look famished, I can see your rib cage.” He said as he pressed his finger to my side, digging it in to tickle me. I doubled over, tugging at his hand to get it away while giggles fell freely from my lips. We were abruptly pulled back when we heard a ruler snap on the table we were sitting at. We each looked up at a very angry librarian; clearly we were not following the rules. We stifled our laughter as we gathered our things and began heading towards the door in a satirical sense of quiet.
“You’re such a bad influence, if daddy Christopher knew…you’d be expelled from the island.” I said as I slung my backpack on my shoulder. He shook his head, looking down at me. He was at least six foot four inches and essentially a giant next to me.
“Me? I’ll have you know that my record was spotless before you came along, you’ve steered me toward the dark side Summer Vanderford.” Precisely enunciated words flowed seamlessly from his lips. I rolled my eyes once again as I nudged into him. We shared a laugh and found ourselves already in route for our favorite deli.
We ate fruity salads with candied almonds and a sherry shallot dressing, it tasted like sex to my taste buds. We stayed after we had finished our food and got a cup of coffee before heading back toward his house, which – did I mention was quite close to mine? Across the street to be exact, such a good distraction.
“What are you doing this weekend?” He asked as he looked down at me.
“I believe Lucy is coming up and who knows, what are you getting into?” I asked as I looked up at him, we weren’t dating. Not really, we just shamelessly flirted and spent almost every day together. We weren’t looking for a label though, I think he knew his future.
“I am going to a very prestigious party, being thrown by yours truly…” He said as his eyes twinkled. I furrowed my brows up at him.
“When were you going to tell me about this party?” I asked, stopping at his mailbox to place my hand on my hip and give him a stare.
“Now as I’ve only just decided on it. I say Lucy should be greeted with a party since she comes up so often AND it just so happens my parental units have flown the coop.” He said with a wag of his brows.
“You’re trouble, you know that right?” I said with a smirk, shaking my head some at his silliness.
“I’ve already told you, it’s the other way around.” He said with a quick kiss to my forehead before turning on his heel and walking toward his house. I shook my head and looked out to the street before crossing towards my house. I looked up at the ludicrously massive house. It was made with actual stone, it looked like a castle. I sometimes saw it as a dungeon though, I felt so very trapped. This was my mess though, I made my bed and now I must lie in it. I opened the gate and walked up toward side where there was a direct door to my room, thank the heavens. It was great for avoiding awkward step-mom talk. I opened the door and stepped in, looking around at the dark red walls. Christopher gave me full artistic control of my décor – I went for blood red walls and white linens. He bought me a badass vanity though, he knew that it was imperative to my well being to have a fully stocked vanity. I was thankful for his realization.
I threw my bag on my bed and pulled my uniform from my body, tossing it into the bin inside my closet. I pulled a t-shirt and pair of sweats out and dressed as comfortably as humanly possible before I picked up my laptop and walked over to sit in my bed. I signed on Skype and found Lucy’s name, pressing call and tucking a pair of ear buds into my ears.
Lucy answered almost immediately, she had changed the most since I left. She’d cut her hair into a short bob and her makeup choices had gone insanely Kardashian. She looked incredible, but she was just really exploring her glam. She smiled at me, her green eyes sparkling as she waved.
“Hello gorgeous, how are you?” I asked as I leaned over and grabbed a tub of peanut butter that was sitting on my bedside table.
“Brilliant, just peachy. How about you babe? Is that peanut butter?” She asked as she squinted toward her laptop screen. I unscrewed the top and scooped my finger into the tub and dug out a mouthful of peanut butter. “Yup” I said as I shoved the pb into my mouth. She groaned and then picked up her phone.
“I swear, Harry knows when I’m skyping with you.” She said as she rolled her eyes, looking down at the text she just received. She looked at me before reading the message out loud. “Hello Lucy, are you going to see Summer this weekend? Do you think maybe I could give you a ride?” She shook her head. “He’s so daft, I don’t know why he thinks I’ll fall for this.” She said as she sat the phone down beside her.
“Gosh, he still texts that every weekend? He’s a persistent one.” I said as I finished swallowing the food. I placed the jar back and wiped my hands on my pants.
“What do you think he’d do if you said yes?” I asked with a smirk, maybe I’d gotten a little cruel.
“You’re vicious, why don’t I reply and find out?” She said with wide eyes and an open mouth as she picked her phone up and began replying.
“No! Lucy, put the phone down! I’m joking, do NOT text him.” I practically yell, leaning forward as if I could somehow stop her through my laptop.
“Too late Summy, I’ve told him he can and to pick me up in the morning at 11:00 am because I want to be there early.” She said with an aggravating satisfied dance.
“No, please tell me you’re kidding? I CAN NOT see him, I can’t!! Plus! Elliot just informed me he is throwing a party in YOUR honor!” I yelled, sitting back and throwing my hand up and moving my forehead to my palm.
“Oh….” Lucy said as she chewed on her lip.
“Seriously!?”
“I didn’t know…he’s already replied. Maybe I can just get him to drop me off?”
“No! Tell him that you are just kidding.”
“I can’t be that cruel, Summer! The poor boy is devastated, maybe you should see him! He needs to be cut free.” She said with a sigh.
“Fooooooock. Fine, whatever. I’ll see you tomorrow.” I said with a sigh and closed my laptop, scooting it to the side.
What the fuck, four months of hard work to go down the drain. What a fucking train wreck.
