Something Good Can Work: Book Two - ON HOLD INDEFINITELY-

I am so damaged.

I looked at my reflection in the mirror. After my chat with Lucy, I may have done a thing. A quite dramatic thing.
I walked into the main part of the house, my phone in my hand as I spotted her. My step mother, Roberta. She was a tall, fit, blonde goddess. It was a little intimidating. She looked like a million bucks, probably because that was less that what she was actually worth.
“Roberta..” I said softly as I sat at the bar, looking over at her. She turned and gave me a wide smile, happy I was speaking to her obviously.
“Yeah, what’s up babe?” She said with her overly sweet accent. She was used to speaking to her five year old daughter- I couldn’t really blame her. She stepped closer to me as I spoke.
“I wanted to make a change…I know you’re always trying to get me to go with you to your hair dresser…do you think maybe you could make me an appointment for early in the morning?” I asked, chewing on my bottom lip.
“Of course! I have an appointment at 8 in the morning, you can have it. I don’t really need anything anyway, this will be so fun!” She squealed as she gave me the most awkward hug. She looked back at me and smiled, sighing slightly. She felt like this was a breakthrough. She walked off once Clari started getting rowdy at her tea party. I slid off the barstool and made my way back to my room to look at a trove of new hairstyles to try out.
Which brings us here. I’ve never been a brunette before, but it definitely goes well with my eyebrows which are naturally darker than my hair.
I moved my fingers through the smooth curls, smiling at the look. It was different. It was great. I heard my phone buzz and looked down to read the message,
Lucy:
“Prepare yourself. Harry and I are about 15 minutes away.”
I sighed and stood up, pulling on a pair of jeans and a green jacket with fur on the hood. My hair was now braided in a long fishtail braid, courtesy of incredibly costly hair extensions that Roberta sprang for.
I walked out of the side door, the cars were gone. Christopher would be out this weekend on business and Roberta had taken Clarissa to a birthday party. This was my excuse, I was going to tell Harry I wasn’t allowed to have boys over. This would work. I got to the gate and opened it so I could wait for them to get here, about ten minutes had passed since the text.
“Summer, you look ravishing. Did you do something different?” I heard Elliot’s voice call as he walked across the street and stopped at the end of the drive.
“Shut up, do you like it?” I asked, twirling the braid around my finger.
“Love it, you look beautiful.” He said with a grin, then his parents stepped out of the door. “Come on Elliot! We’re going to be late for our flight. Oh, hello Summer!” His mother called as they finished loading their bags into the back of his car.
“Duty calls, see you tonight?” He asked as he walked backwards, pointing out at me.
“Definitely.” I say with a smile and just like clockwork, Harry’s car pulled into my driveway, I noticed Harry’s eyes were on Elliot, he must have seen us talking. Ugh.
I was pulled from my thoughts as I heard Lucy yelling excitedly as she ran to hug me.
“Oh my god! This is so great Summer!” She said as she began picking at my hair, giving me the biggest grin.
I was laughing and trying to hug her back, when I heard his voice. His fucking voice.
“It looks good. Hey…” He said as he ran his hand through his hair, looking down at the ground before bringing his eyes to meet mine while a smile played on his lips.
God.
Save me, please?
“Thanks…” I said as I looked down too, hoping Lucy would say something to cut the tension.
“I’ve got to wee! I’ll be back!” She said before taking off, I didn’t even get a chance to object. I slid my hands in my back pocket and rocked on my heels, feeling so very uncomfortable.
“Lucy said you didn’t want me to come.” He said finally.
“I didn’t…” Ouch.
“You have made that very clear…”
“Harry, please. You know this is hard for me…”
“Hard for you? Because if I remember correctly, you left me with barely any explanation, wrote Niall a letter that explained more than what you gave me, and have ignored me completely since you left. Yes absolutely must be so hard for you.” He said as he stepped closer to me. Jeez, tell me how you really feel. I crossed my arms over my chest, wrapping my fingers around my biceps.
“Harry, you know it’s not like that. I felt like I was going to die, I was going to do something stupid and die.” I tried to explain, finally grabbing his hand and pulling him inside the gate. I didn’t want to argue with him in my front yard, I wanted to have a little more dignity.
“Why? I would not have let that happen.” He said, stressing the words.
“You can’t control me, I have to do this on my own.”
“Summer, I’m going crazy. I can’t stop thinking about you, I am so in love with you it scares me… my heart feels hollow and bruised and I don’t know what I did… I’m sorry I hurt Niall and I’m sorry I hurt you, please forgive me.” He pleaded, his green eyes holding my gaze. I knew I was frowning, I didn’t know what to say. I wanted to forgive him and just go home and pretend this never happened, but I couldn’t. I had to better myself.
He grabbed me suddenly, crashing his lips into mine with vigor. I was stunned at first, but instantly my body went limp and I melted into him. He still tasted like honey and his hands found their home pressed against my jaw. I missed the feel of him, the scent of him, the way his hair was always in his eyes and the way he always made the lamest jokes, but I can’t just give in now. Everything I’d done would have been in vain. I finally pull back from him, my eyes on the brink of tears as I look down.
“You love me too, Summer. I will win you back, just you wait.” He said shaking his head. I didn’t say a word, I watched him turn and walk to his car, looking back at me once with the slightest evidence of a smirk. He was gone before I knew it and I already missed him again.
I am so damaged.
“Wow. So um… what?” Lucy said as she sauntered toward me.
“Well… what did you think would happen?” I asked, feeling frustrated. I threw my hands up and walked inside, falling face first into my bed as Lucy closed the door and sat beside me.
“Lucy, he misses you so much. That entire drive all he did was tell me how he was going to fix this…” She said as she stroked the back of my hair, looking down at my still body.
“It’s not that easy. Don’t you know I miss him? Don’t you know that I am not worthy of him? Not like that, I need to fix myself. I cannot break his heart again.” I stressed as I turned to look at her.
“You’re not broken Summy.” Lucy said with an exasperated look.
“I am. More than you know…” I said flatly, sighing heavily before sitting up.
“Let’s not talk about this now and let’s order food. You need to breathe and then we’ll discuss it when we do our traditional pre-party shop and gossip.” Lucy said with a smile. She was right, I wanted to talk- but I needed a minute.
“Deal.”
