a band of cousins

flash of gray

That's when it happened. We were all spread out, doing our own thing.

I didn't remember much from the day. Most of what I know was what they all described and the video camera. Apparently Sydney had left it on and was videotaping Isaac and I to see what we did.

I saw a flash of gray out of the corner of my eye. I felt numbness, not pain. I saw red everywhere. The water around us was red.

I saw Isaac's face. It was a mix of pure terror, worry, and determination. I have never seen those looks on his face at one time before.

Within a few seconds he is on his stomach paddling toward shore. I hear noises but at the time I didn't know what they were. He, the second youngest there, was yelling instructio
ns to everyone else.

Everyone helped in some way. Isaac stepped up and did everything he could but he wasn't superman. He was only a seven year old.

All I saw was Isaac paddling and every once in a while looking back at me. Eric and Quinn were both pushing the board to shore. I saw Anna taking off her shirt that she was wearing over her swim suit. She tied it around my shoulder. At the time I was confused but I understand that it was to stop the blood pouring from my stump where my arm used to be. Abbi wasn't with them.

I heard later that Jake had paddled to shore to tell our grandparents. He had paddled faster than anyone thought was possible. Brady was helping all the girls, who were freaking out. Sydney and Mara were both crying, and not realizing that the camera was still on and taping everything from Jake to me to themselves. Taylor and Ellie were both freaking out that the shark would come back. Abbi had swam over to them and was trying to calm them and get them to shore. Brady had to start paddling with all of them in tow. Abbi was able to help a little but she was also freaking out.

When we finally got shallow enough to walk, I saw Isaac get off the board and start to pull it. I could tell he was tired but he continued to pull. Quinn, Eric, Isaac, and Jake all lifted the board and half ran to the bus. Papa opened up the back and started to put me in. Quinn, Eric, and Jake ran out of view, to help the girls get to shore.

They loaded everyone up as quickly as possible. They had to leave the boards but everyone got on before Papa had even started the bus. Nana was in the back trying to comfort me and to stop the bleeding. Isaac was right next to me. He was holding my only hand now. He wasn't telling me everything would be fine because he didn't know. He told me he would never lie to me and even in all the drama he kept his promise.

We drove as fast as we could. The edges of my vision were getting darker. Then we stopped so quickly that Isaac had to hold onto me so that I didn't fly off the board.

The back door opened and I was lifted onto a stretcher. I was rushed to the ambulance. They wheeled me in and I saw Isaac.

I managed to get out his name right as they poked me with a needle. All of a sudden I could hear so much. I heard the siren, the crying, the engine of the vehicles. My vision sharpened for few seconds. I stayed conscious just long enough to hear Isaac's reply. "You will survive Megan." The doors closed but I could still see through the windows. Isaac was crying. He turned away and ran to the bus. He stopped at the door and waved once before he got in.

That was the last thing I saw before I blacked out.

Notes

the story is a little like Soul Surfer, if any of you have read it, except with more characters.

Hope you guys like it!
