a band of cousins
little competition
I walked back upstairs and out to the beach. I found everyone in the shallow water. I grabbed my surfboard and put my book in the secret spot.
"Anyone going to join me?" I motioned to the surfboards leaning against the side of the shack. Each had a name on it. I pulled out our extra boards. I took up my surfboard and ran for the water. My board had 'Meggie' on it. It also had a handle on it so that when I have to get to the other side of the waves I can actually dive. It was hard at first but now I surf all the time. I splashed into the cool water and started paddling out to the waves. I heard some splashing behind me. I saw Isaac paddling toward me. I waited for him to catch up.
"One Direction?"
"Yeah. We are going to be performing together and writing a song together. I thought I'd show them how a song is made. Topic?"
"Magic," he said right away. He always picked the topic and I would come up with the song based on that. I nodded and started to paddle out to the big waves. I beat him to the first one. He obviously let me have it because I can never beat him to a wave. I caught the wave and rode it for a ways. Isaac caught a wave and then paddled over to me.
"Got anything?" I nodded and sang the part that I thought of.
"'Cause you, you've got this spell on me. I don't know what to believe." He smiled.
"Let's go write that down," he said as he started paddling toward shore. He beat me to shore. It's kind of hard for me to paddle with only one arm but I figured out most of it and when I get too tired Isaac will always pull me along.
"Watch out she's got an idea," Ellie said. She motioned Louis out of the way so I could paddle past.
I jumped off my surfboard and ran onto the beach. Isaac grabbed my surfboard like usual. He brought it to the rock I was sitting on.
"That's how she writes the songs," Mara explained.
"She goes and surfs. It takes her less than an hour to get the chorus," Taylor said. I shushed them and hummed it in my head. I wrote the lyrics down. I stood up and grabbed my board. Isaac put my book away.
"Are you guys up for a little competition?" The guys shrugged. "Girls versus guys," I declared.
"You're so on," Isaac said.
There were more guys than girls but it didn't matter. So it was Jake, Brady, Harry, Liam, Louis, Zayn, Niall, Isaac, Eric, and Quinn. The girls' side had Stacy, Sydney, Anna, Mara, Taylor, Abbi, Ellie, Brianna, and me. We ran to the rock and figured out who would go when. One guy and one girl go out for five minutes and compete for waves. This time one of us would have to go with two guys. Everyone looked at me as if expecting me to jump up and down at the thought.
"Fine. The order will go..."
"Worst to best," Sydney said sharply. "Don't try to make me feel better."
"Actually I was thinking: Stacy, Anna, Mara, Sydney, Taylor, Ellie, Brianna, Abbi, and then me."
"Why?" I smiled.
"Just because," I said micheviously. Truthfully Isaac and I discussed it on the way back from the wave. Mostly he just talked so that I could remember the song. I did remember that much. Nana and Papa walked out with their chairs. They set them up on the beach.
"First up," Nana called.
Jake and Stacy grabbed their boards. They smiled at each other. We were so going to win because Jake would totally go easy on Stacy. They both ran into the water and started paddling out. Stacy caught a wave and rode it for about three seconds before she fell.
Next was Anna. Eric grabbed his board and gave her a 'you're going down' look. She gave it right back to him. They raced out and each caught two waves. It was a tie. Anna laid down on a rock and Eric sat next to her. They were whispering about something.
Mara and Zayn went next. Neither of them were very good, but Zayn managed to catch a wave and Mara ended up tying it.
Sydney and Harry went. Harry got two waves and Sydney barely tried. She was starring at Harry while he surfed.
Taylor and Liam were against each other. Taylor won by getting two waves while Liam only got one.
Ellie and Louis both ran into the water next. They both tied with two waves each.
Brianna and Brady went next. Brianna won, but I could tell Brady let her. Brianna doesn't like losing.
Abbi was next against Quinn. They both got a wave and then Abbi got one more.
Finally it was my turn. I was going against Isaac and Niall. I grabbed my surfboard and beat them out to the waves. Again Isaac let me and I'm pretty sure Niall did too. I got a really good one and rode it for a while. I dove off of it and tried to get another one. By the end Isaac had gotten two, Niall had gotten one, and I got three. I was smiling a lot and laughing at them because they were beat by a girl.
"I let you win," Isaac said. He put his arm around me as we waited for the results.
"The girls won today," Nana said.
"I'm going to go make lunch. I'll be out in a little bit." She and Papa went in.
"So do you have anymore lyrics?" Isaac asked as he poked me in the stomach. I slapped his hand away and nodded. I pulled him aside and sang it to him.
"'Cause you, you've got this spell on me. I don't know what to believe. Meet you once now I can't leave. 'Cause everything you do is magic. But everything you do is magic." Isaac smiled and I wrote it down.
"Hey anyone want to go kayaking?" I loved kayaking. I was pretty good at it too. I ran into the shack and pulled out our kayaks. We didn't have that many. We only had ten. We would have to share.
"Lunch is served," Nana said as she and Papa brought out a tray of food. It was chicken crescent sandwiches. I love them so much. We all grabbed some plates and sandwiches and ate on the rocks or sand. When we were finished I told my grandma and grandpa where we were going.
"Be careful." They brought the dishes inside.
