Fool's Gold

Chapter 23

Enola and I walked into the house silently. We were both exhausted from walking around the hot, sun filled city all day. She was being a little strange since we kissed in the square. She held my hand a little tighter and she didn't say a whole lot. She turned to me as I closed the door. Enola wrapped her arms around my waist and rested her head on my chest. I wound my arms around her small frame. I rested my head on hers. She felt so warm and loving. Enola held me tighter then looked up at me with her big, beautiful eyes.
"Thank you." Her voice was soft.
I smiled, "For what?" Her bottom lip quivered. She inhaled deeply and tried to gather herself before speaking. "Enola, talk to me. You're scaring me." I knew my fear showed in my eyes as well as my voice.
She calmed herself but her voice broke as she said, "This has been the greatest day I have ever had in my life. Being here has been so...thank you."
"Enola." I frowned a little more. She shook her head before pressing it to my chest again.
"I'm sorry. I'm being the emotional artist." She whimpered.
I rubbed her back slowly, "No. I want to know." I lifted her face with my hand under her chin, "I'm so happy that you are so happy." I placed sweet kisses on her lips, her cheeks and her eyelids. I smiled down at her, "Go change into one of my shirts and we'll have dinner." She nodded and left my embrace. I
sighed heavily once I heard the door to the bedroom close. My shoulders sagged as I leaned against the door. I ran my hand through my hair and held it tightly for a moment as I tried to fight the tears that wanted to escape my own eyes. What happened to her to make her so unhappy? I loved the day that we spent together. I too would make it one of the best days of my life, but she seemed so overwhelmed by the sentiment. What broke the amazing woman I had come to care so much for? Was it her father leaving? Her mother's refusal to find love? I wanted to know. I wanted to fix whatever part of her I could. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and texted the one person I knew had any answer for me.
