What Happened To Us

You know that feeling when you're so completely at peace, and then reality hits you like a ton of bricks, completely erasing the wonderful bliss you had moments before? Yeah, I just had that feeling. That kiss with Harry was amazing, and, on top of that, he asked me to be his girlfriend. Talk about a crazy day, mine needed to be sent to the psych ward for a mental health evaluation. I was completely at peace. Then, reality had to poke it's ugly nose into my business and screw everything up.

Ash still liked Harry. I didn't know if Harry still had feelings for her, but I knew I didn't want to be the one to break Ash's heart. There was no way I was going to lose my best friend over a boy. And yet, there was something about the way he smiled at me, and the way his green eyes sparkled when he looked at me, as if he knew a secret I didn't and....NO! Quit thinking about him. It will only hurt worse.

Harry looked at me, concerned. "Um...Shelby? Are you ok?" I took a deep breath. "Harry, think about what we're doing. Ash still has feeling for you, and she's my best friend. I don't want to break her heart." Harry shrugged. "So don't." I looked at him, confused. "What?" I asked. "Just don't tell her. What she doesn't know won't kill her, right?" he said. I frowned. What he said made sense, but how could I keep a secret like that from my best friend? We told each other everything.

I sighed, and ran my hands through my hair in frustration. Here he was, this gorgeous boy, asking me to lie so that we could be in a relationship, on the night said best friend got into a horrible accident. On the one hand, I knew it was wrong. On the other, he was nice and sweet, and asked me to be his, and that kiss...Oh! I sighed. I knew this would lead to no good, but I just couldn't say no. "Alright. I won't tell her." I said. Harry breathed a sigh of relief. I laid my head on his shoulder, and almost fell asleep until a nurse walked up to us, clipboard in hand. "Shelby Ford?" she called out into the quiet hospital room. We stood, waiting fearfully. The nurse looked at us kindly. "Miss Small is stable, but she asleep right now. Why don't you two go home and you can see her in the morning. No use waiting around tonight. She won't wake up until tomorrow afternoon at the latest." Harry leaned forward.
"Were there any serious injuries?" he asked. The nurse nodded. "She has a three broken ribs, a fractured arm, contusions to the face, as well as some contusions to the brain. That's why she won't wake up until later tomorrow afternoon. The doctor put her in a medically induced coma so that the brain has time to heal. That's why it has taken her so long to wake up." Harry nodded, biting his lip. The nurse looked at us both, sympathy in her eyes. "Go on home. There's nothing you can do until tomorrow." With that, she turned around and left Harry's room, probably making her way back to Ash's room.

I turned to Harry. "I'm going to go home. I'll be back tomorrow." I kissed his forehead. As I turned to go, he grabbed my wrist. "Please stay." He stared at me, begging with his eyes. I melted. I set my purse down. "Ok." I said quietly. I started to lay down on the long sofa at the corner of the room, but Harry stopped me. "Come lay with me?" he said, phrasing the statement like a question. I smiled. "Alright." I stood and moved to the hospital bed. I laid down and he pulled the covers up and over the both of us. I turned, so that my back was facing him, and began to doze. Right when I was about to conk out, I felt a pair of strong arms pull me closer to him, until I felt my spine press up against his chest. I felt Harry's soft lips brush up against my forehead and trail their way down to my neck. "Good night, Shelby." he whispered into my ear before hugging me close and falling asleep. A few minutes later, I fell asleep as well to the sound of his slow and steady breathing.
