IMPRINT

"Are you ready yet?"

I was growing impatient with my mother. Did she not realize that we had a plane to catch in a couple of hours?

"A guy could've, God forbid I say it, imprinted on me by now!" I cringed as I spoke the words, even though they were common slang since the new drug, IMP69, came out to the public 4 years ago.

My mom laughs.

"Don't you laugh at me, Janet Mariah Crosse!" I say raising my voice in mock anger.

My mother continues to laugh as she finishes curling her hair. "I can't believe you just used the word "imprint" in a sentence!"

"Well, desperate times call for desperate measures." I state.

"We have 20 minutes, Jade!"

"You know I like to be early. Especially with Southwest's 'pick your own seat' policy."

"Touché." Mom says, unplugging her curling iron. "Well, I expect we'll be just fine. A co-worker of mine once said that flights to Australia are rarely ever full on a weekday."

"Still," I reply.

"Oh, Jade." My mother sighs. "I shall pray for the man who imprints on you."

I cringe. "Do not say the 'i' word! It's very bad!"

Mom laughs once again. "When are you ever going to realise that there's nothing to be afraid of? It's only enhanced human nature!"

"No! It's control. We should have the right to choose our partners!" I defend.

"You're absolutely right. But you treat it like it's a poison!"

"Because it is!"

"One day, Jade. One day you'll learn." Mom sighs once again. "C'mon, let's get going, shall we? We have a whole new adventure in front of us!"

"That's what you think."
