I was just puffing my curled bangs, when a knock was placed on my door. I clonk my heels to reveal one of the house maids that holds a polite grin on her face. “Miss, your guests have arrived. Mr. Wilson told me to inform you that you must descend.” I nod kindly at her, as I close the door and march down the stairs to attend this disliked dinner. I don’t want them here, I don’t want to share the evening looking at them and I certainly do not want to keep Harry in his room all this time.
Speaking of Harry, I forgot to check up on him, but I suppose he is doing well in his room. As I enter the dining room, my stomach churns when I notice a pair of grey eyes looking at me. “There she is. (He smiles under his glasses) How are you kiddo?” I past a fake smile on my face, as I shake Mr. Ronald’s hand. “I’m doing well, thank you.” I should have opened a longer conversation, just for the sake of not greeting the guy with grey eyes. Don’t get me wrong, Charlie is attractive but I don’t like him at all. He has this slithery attitude that makes me avoid him like a rattle snake.
He takes my hand in his palm, kissing the surface instead of settling for a hand shake. “You look stunning as usual, Valerie.” I roll my eyes to myself, as I nod plastically at him. My father catches my reaction, so he clears his throat to decrease the tension. “Let’s all sit down, shall we?” I take the chair closer to my father, but that didn’t prevent Charlie to sit right next to me. I jerked my chair closer to my father, making Charlie smirk cunningly.
“Thomas, how was your exploration trip to the island? Have you found anything interesting?” Ronald, Charlie’s father, asks my father in curiosity while the maids serve the food into each plate. “Actually, I didn’t have much time to get all what I needed. (He looks at me for a second then back at Ronald) My nephew decided to visit, so I had to come back earlier to welcome him home.” I mutter a curse under my breath, knowing that what my father said is going to raise endless questions.
“Nephew? As far as I know, Regina hasn’t married?” My father’s features tense, realising that our cover story is not going to work after all; I have to save this sticky situation. “(I clear my throat) Actually, he’s my cousin from my mother’s side. He just came back from Australia.” Ronald and his son seemed to buy my little white lie, as they both nodded.
“Where is he now? Is he back home, or is he still staying with you? If he’s still here we’d be glad to meet him, right son?” Ronald addresses the last part to Charlie, as he gives him a little nod. Just when I was going to reply and tell them he isn’t here anymore, one of the maids rushes towards me and announces.
“Mr. Harry needs you, Miss. He says he wants to show you the drawing he made for you.” I mentally pull both sides of my hair, yet in the real world my body shivers in fear. My father masks his eeriness with a little smile to Ronald, but I could see his true feelings radiating like mine. “How wonderful, is he an artist? Thomas, you must let us meet him. I insist.” Without having control I yell: “No!”
Ronald and Charlie stare at me in utter shock and curiosity, while my Father’s face reveals his eeriness at last. I look at the two guests with negative anxiousness, not knowing how to clear my sudden behaviour. What to do now, God; what to do?
