Chapter 7

"Please explain to me why I'm here again." Anna says as she sits down on my bed.

I tell her about how Harry ditched me to go to the party and by the end of my explanation she is rummaging through my closet. She pokes her head out seconds later holding a shimmery silver dress that I wore to one of my dad's banquets.

"This?" she asks and I shake my head, walking to go help her. I put the silver dress back and grab one of the ones that I bought earlier today. Not too dressy but not too casual.

When I emerge from the bathroom fully changed, she is sitting on my bed looking through some of my pictures. I cross the room and go into the closet to put on my shoes.

"Who is this?" Anna asks I walk out in black flats. She holds up a picture of when me and my brother went out on our boat last summer in Spain.

"My brother," I say and take the pictures from her. That's enough looking through my past. She stands up as I put them back in my desk drawer and walks towards the door.

"Do I look okay?" I ask and look down at my dress. It's starting to look worse and worse..

"You look fine." she rolls her eyes at my lack of self confidence and grabs my hand. "Now, let's go before we're late."

The house looks as if it's thumping with music as we stop in the grass designated for parking. People lounge around the area, some drinking and some making out. We step out of the car and begin walking down the street.

"What if he's not here?" I ask her and nervously fumble with my purse.

"He'll be here. There's no other place he would be." she says and gives me a warm smile.

We make it to the house a few minutes later and walk into the kitchen where the least amount of people. I'm glad Anna's been here before because I would get lost by the amount of people here if it wasn't for her. We walk over by the fridge and wait until someone we see comes by.

"Louis!" Anna calls when she spots him moving through the crowd.

"Hey guys," he smiles when he walks over. "Want a drink?" he asks me and holds up a red solo cup.

"No thanks," I say and politely decline his offer. He shrugs before tipping back his head and downing the cup in less than five seconds.

"Where's Harry at?" Anna asks finally.

He shrugs. "Outside, I think. Why?"

She looks over at me before nodding for me to go outside. I push my way through the crowd and somehow end up outside on the patio. I find Harry almost immediately, lounging by the small fire built in the middle of the back yard.

My skin prickles and I wrap the cardigan I brought with the dress tightly around me as I walk towards the fire. Shadows reflect off the faces surrounding the fire and in one instant they all look at me at the same time.

"Jess?" Cameron asks and Harry's eyes lock with mine. He looks drunk but I can tell that he is realizing where he's supposed to be now.

"Hey," my voice cracks and I clear my throat. "Hey." That sounded more confident. I step over someone's legs and sit beside Cameron, the only other person I know here. I ignore the looks that Harry's shooting my way and try to focus on the conversation Cameron's trying to start with me.

"I didn't know you were coming." He says.

Neither did I.

"I decided to at the last minute." I say and tuck a loose tendril of hair behind my ear.

We make conversation for a few more minutes until I see that Harry has disappeared. I politely say goodbye to Cameron and hurry back inside to go find Harry. I begin walking up the stairs when someone grabs my arm and pulls me back.

"Jess," a slurred voice says and I look down to see Harry. His green eyes are bloodshot and his hair rustled but he still looks great.

"What?" I snap and cross my arms, my anger returning.

"I'm sorry." He says but his words are slurred together and it's hard to understand him.

"No you're not." I say and step around him to leave. I had planned to give him a long speech but I'm drained and he obviously doesn't want to listen.

"Jess, please." He pleads. Hearing to his pleading voice crumbles my walls and I sigh before turning on my heals and following him upstairs.
