Chapter 5

Before I know it, the week is over and I'm driving home from school on Friday. I'm slightly nervous about my meeting tomorrow with Harry, what if he doesn't show up? What if he just lied to me just to be cruel? Somehow I know that this is exactly what he would do.

Stop worrying, Jess. He promised and he'll most likely keep it. I just need to relax and wait for tomorrow to see what actually happens.

I pull up in the driveway and have to park behind a black suburban. Maybe one of my dad's colleagues is here?

When I walk in the house, I hear talking coming from the kitchen.

"That would be lovely." My mother's voice says with a laugh. She sounds much nicer, what's gotten into her?

"How about next Friday night?" The other voice says, a woman I think. I emerge in the kitchen and see a short woman with brown hair leaning against the counter. They both look at me before my mother beckons me forward to introduce me.

"Martha, I would like you to meet my daughter, Jessica." I cringe when my mother uses my first name but smile warmly at the woman as she introduces herself. Her last name says vaguely familiar but I can't put my finger on it.

"I have a son your age." Martha says. "His name's Cameron."

That's why I knew her last name! The guy that sits at my table at lunch must be her son. I have never talked to Cameron but he seems nice.

"I know him." I respond and her face lights up.

"Well that's great! I'm sure he could come with you Friday night!" My mother explains and clasps a hand on my shoulder. Friday night?

"I will see if he has anything to do but that would be great." Martha smiles and takes a sip out of her coffee mug.

I hurry upstairs into my room before I can get drawn into their conversation. I'm not sure what they were planning for next Friday but it probably has something to do with a dinner. I don't mind them coming over but I was planning to go out and search for jobs on Friday.

I take my mind off the upcoming weekend by starting on my homework. About half way in, the voices downstairs falter and I hear a commotion in the kitchen. I finish my work quickly and lounge around on my bed for the rest of the time.

Just as I get up to go downstairs, my phone buzzes with a text.

From: Unknown Number
I can't make it tomorrow.

I look at the number with confusion. It's probably Harry but I'm not sure.

To: Unknown Number
Harry?

From: Unknown Number
Who do you think it is, Jess?

I roll my eyes at his sarcasm and put his number in my phone. I don't remember giving him my number but I'm not sure.

To: Harry
Why can't you come tomorrow?

I knew that he couldn't come. I was just set up to be let down.

From: Harry
I'm just joking. Don't take everything so seriously, Jess.

To: Harry
Don't make everything a joke, Harry.

There, two can play at that game.

From: Harry
Stop flirting with me.

My cheeks blush and if Harry were here he would surely laugh. I wait until the blood leaves my cheek before responding.

To: Harry
I'm not flirting. If you're just going to tease me you can quit texting me.

From: Harry
Don't get shit faced, I'll be at your house tomorrow.

I delete his recent message quickly. If my parent's were to see it they would surely freak out.

To: Harry
Don't be late.

From: Harry
Goodnight, Jess

To: Harry
Goodnight :)
