Chapter 3

"Mrs. Andrews, may I speak with you?" The teacher calls my name as I pass through the door. A few immature kids make noises but I ignore them and approach her desk.

"It was brought to my attention that you don't like your partner?" She says, her voice filled with concern.

I bite my tongue before I can say something I'm not supposed to. Harry told her that I was the problem? The nerve of that kid!

"I have no problem with my partner." I say with a smile. Other than the fact that he is a jerk.

"Oh great! I was worried that you two wouldn't get along, he's not the most social person." She jokes and I laugh along. I would have never thought that he wasn't social.

"Oh! Look at the time!" She exclaims and looks at her watch. "I'm sorry I held you from lunch!" She says worriedly.

"It's fine." I assure her and begin moving towards the door. Despite being late to lunch, I'm actually glad that I got to speak with her about my partner situation.

"Have a nice day, Jess!" She calls after me as I walk into the hall.

"I thought you were going to meet me at my locker after class?" Anna frowns as I walk up to the lunch table. I sit on the chair and set my tray down on the table.

"I'm sorry. I got caught up with a teacher." I apologize and open my carton of milk.

"In apology you can give me those tater tots." She nods down and I gladly slide them to her. They looked soggy and cold and way unappetizing.

As she munches down on her tots, I look around at who's sitting with us. The boys from Chemistry, plus two new guys and a girl that are unfamiliar. They soon introduce themselves as Luke, Cameron, and Eleanor.

"How are you liking it here so far?" Eleanor asks me as the guys talk about an upcoming football game.

"It's okay." I shrug and take a sip of my milk. It is okay here, despite my first day turning out like crap. Eleanor smiles and we talk throughout lunch, she's actually really nice and thinks the same way I do. By the time we are dismissed, I feel like I've made a new friend.

I look at my schedule when we get into the hallway and find my way towards Stats. I've already taken this course but it was the only class that looked remotely interesting.

I take a seat near the front of the room and set all my books on the desk. The class soon fills up and I realize that there is no one in here that I recognize. Except for one person.

In the back sits Harry, slumped back into his desk and talking to one of his friends. He looks the same as he did this morning, except angrier and more irritated. When he catches me looking, I automatically turn around.

"Welcome to Statistics everyone. I hope that you have gotten all of your supplies ready because we are going to start immediately." The teacher, Mr. Barwick, says and directs our attention towards the board at the front of the room. I finish the problem with ease and sit back, waiting for everyone else.

"Did you get the answer?" Someone asks me and I look to see Harry taking the empty seat beside me. I furrow my brows at him and wait for him to explain himself.

"What?" He asks, seeing my confused look.

"Why are you over here?" I whisper, making sure the teacher isn't looking before I speak.

"I need the answer, as I just said." He rolls his eyes at my stubbornness and moves to see my work. Not today. I slide the notebook away and flip it on the back page so he can't see it.

"Don't be difficult." He barks.

"Why are you suddenly talking to me now? You wanted nothing to do with me this morning." I tell him. I don't know whether to be relieved that he's being somewhat nice or annoyed that he keeps asking for my answer.

"That's because I was pissed." He explains.

"Well you shouldn't take your emotions out on other people." I say and cross my arms. A girl behind us shushes us and Harry rudely tells her to shut up.

"Are you really giving me a lecture about how I treat people?" He asks sharply.

"It's not a lecture. It's a suggestion."

He rolls his eyes. "Whatever, Jess." He stands up and walks back to his desk in the back, leaving me more confused than ever.
