Chapter 2

I open my eyes at 6:28 and lay in the bed, staring at the clock as the extra two minutes pass by until my alarm goes off. I stand up and stretch my arms as I pad quietly across the floor towards the window. A thin layer of frost covers the glass and I use the curtain to wipe it away so I can see. My room looks out to the side of the house, staring directly into the second story window beside us. This may not be the best view but it's not that bad to wake up to every morning.

"Jessica!" My mom calls and I jump from her loud voice. I hurry away from the window and walk across the room to answer the door.

"Hey," she smiles as the door opens. "There's breakfast downstairs and I've got your books and everything else you need by the door. I'm heading out for the day." She starts to walk away but I tug on her shirt sleeve.

"Wait." I say and she stops momentarily. "Where are you going?" Has she gotten a job already?

"I have some interviews set up today and I need to run some errands." She answers my thoughts and smiles warmly. She kisses my cheek before continuing on down the hallway.

I close the door and head into the bathroom to get ready. I take a quick shower and curl my hair into simple waves, putting on more makeup than I usually do. I don't normally wear a lot of makeup but the girls that I've seen around here all look gorgeous and dress nicely. I pick out a simple white dress that I used to wear a lot back home and put on some black flats.

I stand in front of the mirror and twirl around. To be honest, I look great and feel it too. At my other schools I always felt out of place, never knowing anyone and being the outcast. But hopefully this year will be different, hopefully I'll make friends that will last for a long time.

I look over at my clock and start moving to get my stuff that I need. School doesn't start until 8:00 but I want to be there a bit early to pick up my schedule and make a good first impression on my teachers.

I get downstairs a few minutes later and quickly scarf down my breakfast. My father left a few minutes ago to go into Denver to set up some meetings, giving me the house to myself. I wait a few minutes as I stare out the kitchen window before heading out.

The school is relatively quiet and I easily find my way to the main office. A few people look at me weirdly but I ignore their judgmental stares and walk up to the secretary.

"You must be Jessica." The secretary behind the desk, Mrs. Burnes, smiles at me when I enter.

"It's just Jess, actually." I correct her as she types furiously on the computer.

A few minutes later I'm handed my schedule and a class changing schedule in case I change my mind. I thank her and walk out into the hallway to find my locker. I wanted to take a tour of the school but there's too many people here and I'm not familiar with my classes yet. I walk down the hall towards the yellow building and find my locker beside one of the windows.

"Come on," I sigh when my locker won't open. I turn the dial to my combination and jiggle on the handle but it doesn't work. I stare at the blue window in front of me and go to try one more time.

Great, it's my first day of school and I can't even open my locker.

"Let me help you with that," someone says beside me and I turn to see a pretty girl with light blonde hair moving towards my locker. She takes the combination out of my hand and works on the locker, easily opening it.

"Uh, thanks." I say and begin putting my supplies into the small space. She smiles at me and walks down a little ways to open her locker.

"You're name's Jessica, isn't it?" She asks when she comes back over. I replay how to open my locker before shutting it completely.

"Just Jess." I say and she nods.

"Alright, just Jess, I'm Anna. Do you know where your classes are? I can show you if you want." She offers and my mood brightens. I nod and motion for her to show me the way. We navigate through the yellow building, finding where my first period and fifth period classes are, before looping back through the school to find the rest of my school. She shows me a few other things that I don't necessarily need to know but I can tell she's happy to have someone with her.

"Lucky for you we have first period together." she teases as we make it to Chemistry. I thank whoever put me in this class silently and follow her into the classroom, I'm glad I know at least one person in Chemistry.

We sit towards the back and share a table with two other guys. They begin talking to Anna and I conclude that they are friends. I sit silently beside the tables until the class begins when the teacher walks in.

"The people at your table will be your partners for the majority of the year so choose wisely!" The teacher yells at us over the chatter and a few people begin to move. I look around to the people surrounding me and stay put. They seem like nice people, plus I don't know anyone else. Anna takes the seat next to me and we wait for further instruction from the teacher.

"I know it's your first day but I want to go ahead and assign you your first project for the year. Please read the guidelines on the table and choose what topic you want to do your project about." The teacher says loudly and dismisses us to find what we like. The muscular boy at the table introduces himself as Liam and offers to take the lead on the project.

"We can do this." Liam points to the topic of Natural Selection and walks up front to report what we picked. We begin working and before I know it we're being dismissed.

"Meet me at my locker after your next class." Anna says to me before turning down the hallway. I walk the way that Anna showed me and make it to my class before anyone else. I guess this is the perfect time to introduce myself to the teacher.

"...I'm glad you chose this class and I hope you have a great time in here." The teacher finishes her introduction as she hands me several packets that I will need for this year. I thank her and begin to walk back to my seat as the class fills up with students.

"Oh, wait! I have some news for you." She stops me in my tracks and I slowly turn back around. The pack of papers in my arms are starting to grow heavy and all I want to do is go back to my seat.

I walk up to her desk. "Yes?"

"If you don't want to be overwhelmed, I can get you a tutor to help you catch up with us. I'm sure you're a very smart girl and I don't want you to be left behind." she smiles and a tremendous pressure lifts off my chest. Everyone must be on a complete different level than me since they take French every year and I worried that I would be left to pick up the pieces on my own. Now, with a tutor, I can relax.

"That would be great. Thank you." I smile before walking back to my seat.

There's someone in the desk beside me when I walk back up and I immediately feel chills travel down my spine as I sit down. He's tattooed and looks like someone you would run away from in an alley.

"Well, looks like you've already met your tutor." The teacher smiles at us and it takes my mind a minute to register what she said. He seriously can not be my tutor.

"What?" I say rudely and see the boy beside me glare at me. This is exactly why he can't be my tutor.

"Harry is the best student in here. I'm sure you will get along very well." She beams at him and hands me a thick book that we're to go by. I decide not to say anything else, this boy probably already hates me, there's no need to make him any angrier.

"I guess we should meet somewhere after school so we can start." I ramble and write down my address, handing it to the complete stranger. The teacher partnered me with him for a reason, I might as well find out.

"I'm sure you can find someone else to tutor you." he says and crumbles up my paper.

You have got to be kidding me.

"I know you don't like the idea of helping someone out but if you don't tutor me, I will most likely fail this class." I say, hoping to get to him through pity.

"Get Mrs. Greene to find you a new tutor. I'm not doing it." He says rudely and stands up. I watch as he walks across the class and gets into a heated argument with the teacher.

I have no idea what just happened.
