Chapter 1

I end up waking up around 3:00 in the afternoon. There's too much light in the room for me to fall back asleep and laying here on this hard mattress is becoming uncomfortable. I finally decide that I need to drag my butt out of bed and I climb off the mattress to go get ready. I take a shower since I haven't taken one since we left the airport and enjoy my time under the endless stream of warm water. I close my eyes as the water relaxes my muscles and stand under the water for a few more minutes before doing what I came in here to do.

After putting my hair into a braid and putting on a pair of faded jeans and a sweatshirt, I head downstairs to greet my family.

"Well look who's awake." My dad chuckles when I enter the room. I smile at him and take a seat across from him at the kitchen table. He puts down his newspaper and picks up his cup of coffee. It's almost as if it's in the morning rather than 3 in the afternoon. I stand up to fix myself a bowl of cereal and open one of the cupboards.

"I think your mother wanted to take you school shopping." My dad says behind me as I pour the milk into my cereal. I furrow my eyebrows at him as I take a seat. Why would she want to take me school shopping? Usually she would just order my stuff off line and not say another word about it.

"Why?" My curiosity gets the best of me. I may sound a bit conceded and rude but I'm genuinely curious.

"It's your senior year, Jessica. This will be the last time she will have a chance to." He says with a bit of sadness in his voice. I want to hug him and comfort him but I'm afraid if I do, I'll begin crying.

"What are you guys talking about in here?" My mother's voice rings down the stairs and seconds later she joins us in the kitchen.

"School." I say as I stand up to put away my bowl. She takes my seat and grabs an apple out of the fruit basket on the table.

"I'm going to leave you two alone for the day. I have a few phone calls to make." My dad drinks the rest of his coffee before saying goodbye to each of us and disappearing in his office.

"Are you ready?" My mom asks me when she's finished with her apple. I nod and follow her out to the car.

After two hours of shopping, we decide that we have everything we need and begin to head home. We got way more than I needed but if it meant making her happy, then I was fine with it.

Once we got home, I headed upstairs to unpack everything and get myself ready for tomorrow. I unpack the little boxes I have and try to put everything around the furniture that was delivered today. By the time I finish, my room looks as it did before we left.

I promptly walk back downstairs after finishing everything and sit down on the couch in the living room. Now that it's during the day and I can see things a little bit better, I look around at everything around me. The house has modern elements in it but the old vintage look dominates the area. This is how I exactly pictured where we would live at if we didn't move around so often.

"I'm going to go pick up our pizza." My mom announces as she walks into the living room.

"I'll go." I volunteer. I needed an excuse to get out of the house and it just so happens that this came up.

"You sure? I don't want you to get lost." She frowns. I stand up and take the car keys from her hand.

"I'll be fine." I tell her and kiss her cheek for reassurance. After contemplating about letting me go, she finally agrees and makes me promise that I will come straight home. I agree to all of her requirements and leave the house quickly before she can stop me.

The pizza place is empty and in no time I'm handed the pepperoni pizza. I thank the short man behind the counter before walking back out to my car. The wind has begun to pick up and I curse at myself for not wearing a thicker jacket. I hold the pizza box close to my body, hoping that some of the heat will find it's way into me.

As I near my car, I look across the parking lot at a group of teenagers surrounding a car. Most of them are holding either a beer or smoking, and all seem to be laughing and carrying on. I hope that all teenagers here don't act like that or otherwise I won't be able to make any friends.

I unlock the car and quickly climb in before they can see me.

I slowly make it back to the house and deliver the pizza to my parents. We eat with the sound of the news in the background and I dismiss myself to go upstairs. I know that it's only 9:00 but I'm too tired to stay up any longer. I change into some night clothes and curl up in my bed, switching the light off in the process.

I fall into much needed sleep and smile to myself as I imagine what's to come.
