Collision

Prologue

"Here, have some coffee." My dad hands me a cup full of coffee as he sits down beside me. I gratefully take the coffee and sip on it as we wait for our plane to begin boarding. Apparently there's some blizzard hovering over where we're going, maybe picking Colorado wasn't such a good idea.

In what seems like forever, the fuzzy intercom advises us it's time to board the plane. We go through the gates and are ushered into first class. Men in business suits and women in dresses fill the first class area and I'm surprised when my father speaks to some of them. He speaks to them about how his life is doing as my mother and I sit down in one of the last rows. I choose the window seat and she gladly accepts, the only way she will get on a plane is if she's not reminded that she's on a plane.

"Who was that?" I ask my dad when he sits down on the other side of my mother. He flips up his collar and begins loosening his tie.

"One of my old colleagues." He dismisses my question and settles back into his seat. I do the same and stare at the blank small movie screen in front of me. When I try to press the power button, it remains black.

Of course I get stuck with the broken TV screen.

I keep in my sigh and reach into my bag beside me. Luckily, I came prepared. I pull out an old book that I have read a thousand times and flip to the first page. Some pages are ripped and the spine is falling apart but it's still my favorite book to read. I flip to the first page and begin reading as the plane begins to take off.

At exactly three in the morning, the plane lands in the Denver International Airport. Even though we still have a few hours to drive until we get to Oakwood, I'm grateful to get off that plane. The seats were uncomfortable and I finished my book before we were even half way there. I climb into the back seat of the town car we were issued and prepare for three more long hours.

Three hours later, we are driving through a large neighborhood with wealthy looking homes. I sit up and try to wipe the sleep out of my eyes as we turn onto a narrow road that takes us uphill. We follow the gravel road through the trees and finally come to a stop in front of a quaint looking home. It's the complete opposite of what I was expecting, and I love every bit of it.

I'm so eager to explore the house that I almost step out while the car's still moving. I patiently wait as the driver pulls up into the driveway and step out when the car is fully stopped.

I grab my bag that I brought with me instead of putting it into the trunk and dart out of the car, towards the front steps. I collect my thoughts as I barrel up the brick steps and stop just in front of the dark mahogany door.

"Will you wait a minute?" My mom groans as she lumbers up the steps to join me. She's never been a morning person. "You don't even have the key." She says and crosses her arms.

I hold out my hand and smile when the cool metal of the key drops into my palm. Pushing the door open, I flip on the light and gasp at what's in front of me.

The front door leads into the foyer with a small living room on one side, the stairs right beside it, and a long hallway leading to the rest of the house. I drop my bag in one of the chairs and walk eagerly towards the kitchen. The kitchen has nice appliances but it still has that rustic look, something that I absolutely love. I promise myself to look at all of the details after I check out the whole house.

On the first floor is a large living room, a bathroom, the kitchen, and the small section in the front of the house. I head upstairs to pick out my room and end up choosing the second largest bedroom, farthest away from my parent's room. The room is a decent size, perfect for me, and painted a creamy color. I check out the bathroom that's down the hall from it before joining my parents downstairs.

"How does it look?" My dad asks with a smile like he already knows the answer.

"Perfect," I answer and close the space between us to hug him. This wouldn't work without him agreeing to let me choose where to live for my senior year.

"The furniture won't be here until tomorrow but we can unpack what we have." My dad announces and I mentally groan. After the eagerness to see the new house has worn off, it has left me tired and exhausted. The last thing I want to do is unpack.

Sensing my uneasiness, my dad squeezes my shoulder.

"You can go ahead upstairs and unpack in the morning." He smiles and I close my eyes in relief.

"Thanks dad," I give him a quick kiss on the cheek before obliging to his request. I leave on what I have since it was just a simple pair of sweatpants and an old t-shirt and climb onto the bare mattress. I'm too tired to either care about not having sheets or getting up and putting them on. I curl into a ball and eventually drift off to sleep.
