When I'm Gone

Nine

Louis' POV

I stayed all day. I can't believe it. It felt like we were on the airplane again, time just went so quickly. Eleanor called me twice but I ignored it. She text me and I just told her I wanted to stay longer, I didn't really give her a reason other then that.

Dottie came in promptly at seven. “Hey, I'm here, go home for a bit.” She smiled at Kate and I.

“Thank you, she just fell asleep, I think today was exhausting for her, all these visitors.” She smiled.

“And you stayed all day Louis?” She turns to me.

“Um, yeah, what can I say, Olivia sure knows how to charm.” I say truthfully. She's hilarious, she reminds me of her mom but just a little more adventurous, like a child should be.

“Well, no rush back. I have tomorrow off so I can stay as long as you want.” She assures Kate, they hug and we walk out quickly disposing of our gloves and masks. I almost forgot we had them on but the masks have a certain smell to them, it was nice to not have that sharp intake of chemicals.

“So do you need a ride?” Kate turns to me as we exit the hospital. “My car is just over there, I can take you somewhere. Its probably the least I can do for you keeping me company all day.”

I hesitate but I'd rather not take a taxi and I'm sure Eleanor is already busy and pissed at me since I didn't answer her calls.

“Sure.” She smiles at me and motions for me to follow her through the parking lot to a black Porsche SUV, my eyes grow wide. How can she afford a Porsche? They're not cheap by any means.

She unlocks it and we climb in. “Is this a Porsche?” I ask still shocked. I expected a car or something along those lines, not this.

“Um, it is, a Porsche Cayenne to be exact.” She informs me.

“It's nice.” I tell her buckling my seat belt and listening to the purr of the engine, I sit there admiring all fine craftsmanship.

“Thanks. So where to?” She asks cautiously backing out of the lot.

I go to give her the directions but pause myself. “You want to get something to eat first?” I ask, surprising myself.

She pauses at the stop sign and looks at me, slightly smiling. “Sure.” She sets out to drive, not asking where to go, just driving. I kind of like it when people have a plan and don't need my help. We stop at a Grand Union.

“Hope you don't mind that I chose here. It's just a small bar and grill like place I go to quite a bit to grab a quick bite.” She smiles.

“Sounds good.” We get out and I hold the door for her in front of the building, walking into a quiet little place we take a seat in an open booth and are greeted right away.

“Hey Kate, how's Olivia?” A young waitress comes to our table almost immediately.

“She's doing well Lucy, thanks for asking. She wants to get outside and play but she was pretty excited when Spiderman cleaned the windows yesterday.” There's that genuine smile again.

“Oh I bet, you want your usual?” She asks and Kate just nods. “And what would you like sir?” She turns to me and I quickly scan the menu and order a cheeseburger and fries. The waitress grabs our menus and retreats back to the kitchen.

“So what do you always get?” I ask curiously.

“The spicy meatballs. They're my favorites.” She smiles. Always smiling.

“So you come here a lot then?” Obvious if the waitress knows exactly what she orders.

“Well, every time Olivia has a doctors appointment and since she's been staying here we've come here. She loves their hot dogs.” Giggling at the thought.

“You're like the strongest woman I know.” I pause to reflect everything.

“Well thank you. I'd like to think that anyone in my position would do the same. When push comes to shove, you just have to show what your made of.” I can't think of anyone who would fight this battle with this much grace.

“So, lets talk about something else. What do you like to do for fun?” She asks.

----------------------------

We talk for what seems like an exceptionally long time, looking at my phone I realize it's close to 9.

“We should go, I can drop you off then I have to go home and get cleaned up.” She stands and starts putting her coat on. “Thank you for dinner, you didn't have to pay.”

“It's the least I can do, plus I owe you for the water and kit-kats from the plane.” I tease.

“Oh yes, those were so expensive.” She feigns dramatically.

“Well I can take you out a few more times to make up for it.” We both pause at an awkward moment, I don't know why I suggested it, things are just easy with Kate.

--------------------------------------

She drops me off and continues home, we both live on the north side of London, Olivia's hospital is just on the south side.

As soon as I enter the door Eleanor is on my tail.

“Where have you been? Who dropped you off?” She asks.

“I was at the hospital. I connected with a three year old girl and I just couldn't leave. I took a taxi home.” I lie. I'd rather not tell her that the mother of this girl was getting my attention.

“Louis we need to talk.” She tells me and I pause in my tracks and turn to face her.

“About what?' I ask cautiously.

“I want to get engaged.” She tells me.

“Well my cousin, my younger cousin just got engaged. And she's younger then I am. Shes been with her boyfriend for less time then you and I've been together.” She informs me, emphasizing the word younger.

“So? Why does that matter?” I don't understand her sudden fascination with marriage.

“Because it does matter!” She practically shouts at me and I roll my eyes.

“I'm not dealing with this right now Eleanor. I'm tired. I spent my day with a little girl who could die tomorrow and you're worried about how it will look on you when your little cousin gets married before you do. Get a grip.” I start walking up the steps to lay in bed leaving her at the bottom of the steps.

“Louis.” She shouts after me. “LOUIS!” I once again turn to face her. “I'm giving you one month. If we are not engaged by then, I'm leaving you.” She keeps her gaze and I have no response. I just shake my head and push my hair back.

“Fine Eleanor.” I mutter and walk back up the stairs. I'm not ready now, what's a month going to do?

Notes

OMG, sorry if my spacing is weird, I copy and paste this from my word document and this website kept deleting paragraphs. Apparently it's not a morning person either. I'm up so early on a Sunday!!! My nan is coming to my school with my mom and she doesn't like to wait so you must be ready. :)

Thank you all for the lovely comments! I thought about stopping the story just because the gravity of the situation but I'll continue because of what ya'll said. I would like my 10 back though...shameless plug.

What do you think of Louis and Kate?? Louis and Eleanor?? Remember, just a story, I still think Louis and Eleanor are super cute.
