When I'm Gone

Twenty-seven

Louis' POV

It's been a few days since Eleanor's blow up. She came home the next day and apologized nonstop saying the stress of everything is just getting to her. I was honestly shocked that she acted like that, she never lets her emotions get the best of her like that.

It was before six AM that Eleanor was up and out of bed. She informed me she had to go on a meeting with a magazine discussing to put our wedding pictures in the tabloids. I was against it but for some reason she was thinking of it. I just found it odd that she was leaving so early for an office that probably wasn't even open till after eight. But she woke me up when she left so I'm still sitting in bed messing with my phone when it starts vibrating. An unrecognized number.

“Hello?” I answer.

“Louis?” I sit up instantly.

“Kate? Are you okay?” I ask flipping the covers back and swinging my legs over the side.

“Louis, I'm so sorry to bother you so early but I'm beyond sick and I need someone to take Olivia to school. Could you please come over and help me?” She asks and I'm already getting dressed.

“Of course!”

“Thank you. Dottie is already at work, Patricia is on vacation and my mom told me it was impossible to invent a transporter so quickly and beam herself over here.” She lets out a giggle but it quickly turns to coughing.

“Wait, Patricia is on vacation?” I start to tease but I'm sure she doesn't get it.

“Yeah, this week and next week.” Her voice is horse.

“Don't you mean holiday?” I'm smiling, even though she's sick I can't help but tease.

“No, she's on vacation.” I make a face, maybe this isn't the proper time to tease.

“Well she's actually on holiday. Americans take vacation.”

“Louis, can you come or not?” She's for sure not in the mood.

“Only if you tell me Patricia is taking a holiday.” I trail off with the word holiday as I run down the steps for my coat.

“Fine. Patricia is on holiday. Happy now?” She's now angry, makes me smile.

“Very much. See you in a bit!” I end the conversation and jump in my car to her place.

-----------------

I arrive at her house just a little before seven and find the spare key that Kate had text me about to let myself in. The house is quiet as I enter and make my way up the steps to Kate's room. I knock quietly before opening the door to see Kate laid out on the bed, looking miserable.

“Hey.” I whisper, not quite sure if she's awake.

She doesn't move on the bed at all, “Hi Louis.” She rolls to her side then on her stomach looking at me. Even sick she's beautiful. “Thank you for coming.”

“No problem, I know you'd do the same for me.” Of course, I have other people that can help me, Kate has no one.

“Right, so Olivia is probably just waking up, she has to be at school by 8:00. She has to wear her yellow St. Peter's Eaton polo, navy blue bottoms, white socks and her navy shoes.” She starts to speak but reaches for her water on the nightstand and takes a sip. She can only wear her black or her navy petticoat. I'm sure she'll want the Navy one, her sweatshirt is in her bag. Please make sure you brush her hair, have her eat breakfast, and make sure she brushes her teeth. My keys are hanging on the hook, you can take the Porsche because her car seat is already in it.” She takes another sip.

“Right.” I try to mentally process everything. “One more thing.”

“What's that?”

“Where does she go to school?” My face tilted to the side in a bit of laughter.

“Sorry, St. Peters Eaton Square, just off of Lower Belgravia Street.” She flashes a tight smile as she pulls the blankets tighter.

“You going to be okay?” I ask cautiously.

“I'll be fine, thank you so much Louis.”

“Not a problem” I do a slight salute and turn to find Olivia, quietly closing the door.

I walk across the hall and down to Olivia's room and peek in to see her running around the room in her pajamas like a mad woman.

“LOUIS!” She yells, I haven't seen her in over a year.

“OLIVIA!” I yell back at her as she runs and jumps into my waiting arms and I hug her with everything I have, spinning her around in circles. I forget how much I missed this little kid.

“What are you doing here?” She asks, pushing her crazy hair back from her face.

“Your mum is sick so I'm taking you to school today.” I stand up and start digging in her closet for her uniform.

“Yay! Can you fix my hair?” She starts spinning around the room in circles.

“Um, yes, just let me find your uniform first and get you changed.” I managed to find everything and give the pieces to Olivia, leaving her in the bathroom to change as I straighten out her bed.

“Louis!” She sings to me. “Can you fix my hair?” She shouts.

“Are you all done changing?” I ask, just to make sure.

“Yes!” She's just like her mum, a wee bit impatient.

I open the door to find Olivia standing on the stool in front of the vanity violently brushing her hair.

“What do I have to do?” I ask her as she looks around the counter to find a pony tail holder.

“Put it up for me?” She pouts her lips and I can't help but smile. “Pretty please?” What a stinker. I'm not the best at doing hair but I can manage, I gather it all up and secure it with the holder, satisfied with my work.

“It needs to be higher.” She demands as I let out a groan and pull the elastic out to start over. “It need the yellow bow.” She also demands when I'm finished. Jeez, she's picky.

I fish through the drawers to find the yellow bow and pin it by the pony tail.

“All right. Done.” I throw my hands up in victory. I got this. “Let's go eat breakfast.” We walk out of the bathroom and down the steps to the kitchen. “What would you like for breakfast?” I ask, assuming just a bowl of cereal.

“I want an egg and cheese sandwich on an English muffin.” My eyes wide. Do we even have time for this? I look frantically at the clock, it's only 7:20, we still have twenty-five minutes before we have to leave.

“Um, okay.” I mutter and spin around the kitchen. I have no idea where anything is. I hear Olivia huff and turn to her sitting on the counter waiting for me to do anything. I'm feeling some pressure from a four year old.

“The muffins are in the fridge.” She starts pointing out directions and I follow suit. “Same with the egg, just one with a little milk and you can put it in there.” She points to the microwave. “Then you toast the muffin and put butter on it. Then the egg and cheese on top.” She rolls her eyes and starts tapping her fingers on the counter and I get to work.

“Thank you.” She's four years old going on twenty four apparently.

Olivia painfully finishes breakfast, shes a slow eater. I rush her to brush her teeth and we're out the door. I fumble with her car seat and make it to school in record time. I'm reminded to call my mom and thank her for putting up with me all those years, just one morning with Olivia made me frazzled.

---------------------

I pull up back at Kate's and rush up the steps to ask if she needs anything before I go, quietly opening one of the double doors to see her sleeping, I can't help but smile.

I walk over to her and grab the trash can, picking up all the used tissues and throwing them away. Kate looks so peaceful.

“Mmm, thank you Louis.” I hadn’t realized she was awake.

“You're welcome. Do you need anything while I'm here?” I ask her.

“No, but could you pick Olivia up from school?” She asks.

“Of course. What time does school end?”

“Just be there at 2:45, I'll e-mail her teacher to let her know you're picking her up.” She rubs her eyes and slightly stretches.

“Do you have anyone here to take care of you today?” From the way she looks I don't know if she'll be able to take care of her.

“No, I'll be fine.” She moans.

“What happened?” I sit on the edge of the bed, careful not to do touch her, I still have the urge to rub her back to make her feel better.

“I don't know, I went to bed just fine but then I woke up at three am just feeling terrible and I couldn't stop throwing up. I thought it was just a fluke so I went back to bed but I couldn't sleep, then I was freaked out, I can't take care of Olivia like this.”

I nod. “Whose going to be here when I drop her off?”

“I'll call one of the neighbor girls to watch her, hopefully tomorrow I'll be better.”

“You don't have to do that, I can be here.” I volunteer myself even if I had a hectic morning.

“OH no, Louis, I couldn't ask you to do that, you've done enough.”

“It's no problem Kate, you just rest and relax. I'll go get you some tea and crackers, then we can just watch movies all day okay?” I suggest.

“That sounds perfect.” She tries to smile. She's just perfect.

Notes

Literally so frustrated with this website...I tried to upload this chapter FOUR times.

But!

Louis and Olivia reunion. I had lots of fun writing this chapter, I think even if Louis has so many younger sisters, it wouldn't prepare him for Miss Olivia in the AM. :) Be patient with this story, everything is slowly fitting together.

Thank you all so much for all the votes, subscriptions, views, and COMMENTS. Makes my day brighter.

Happy Sunday.
