When I'm Gone

Twenty

Louis' POV

I can't help but look at Kate smiling. Just pure joy on her face. I can't hide that I picked this song out not just for Olivia, but for Kate too.

Oh, oh, oh
For the longest time
Oh, oh, oh
For the longest time
I'm that voice I'm hearing in the hall
And the greatest miracle of all
Is how I need yourselves
And how you needed me too
That hasn’t happened for the longest time

Maybe this won't last very long
But you feel so right
And I could be wrong
Maybe I've been hoping to hard
But I've gone to far
And it's more then I've hoped for

We continue singing and I just can't believe how this planned has turned out. There is no ball. Well at least their wasn't until this morning. After we had cleaned the house I got a hold of Dottie and started planning. Dottie had told us Olivia had finally woken up and I just wanted to do something special for her.

So the guys and I all brainstormed and this is what we came up with. We rented costumes for ourselves and then just went out and bought a bunch of children's prince charming outfits for the boys and dresses for the girls.

Dottie showed us to the floor cafeteria that was usually closed on the weekends and told us to help ourselves. Thankfully being famous had its perks at times and we just called in a bunch of favors. Once people had heard what we were doing, they all but rushed out to help us decorate and organize the event.

We stopped at each children's room to deliver the goods, saving Olivia's for last.

I swear these two people could light up a whole hospital with their smiles.

“Right, so you get changed Olivia, and we'll see you at the magic castle.” Zayn smiles and starts to head out with the rest of the guys.

“Thank you.” Kate mumbles, hardly audible.

I simply nod my head and follow the lads out to the hallway.

----------------

The guys make the rounds, gathering the children and their parents up to escort them to the “ball” but I waited for Kate and Olivia. I wanted to personally escort Olivia there. The door opened and I turned, face to face with Kate.

“Hi.” I'm a bit timid.

“Hi. Olivia needs a wheelchair, I'm just going to go get one.” She gestures down the hall to what I'm assuming is a storage closet.

“Are we ever going to talk about what happened last night?” I ask, taking a big risk.

“Go ahead, talk.” She talks to me over her shoulder.

“Well, what are we going to do about it?” I ask catching up with her, speaking quietly so no one can hear us.

“What do you want to do Louis? I can't believe I did that. I can't believe I slept with a taken man. It's disgusting.” She stops in her tracks and looks at me.

“So it's not what you want?” I ask. I'm so conflicted. I love Eleanor, right? But Kate, something is different. The connection is different.

“Louis.” She starts, she closes her eyes and I can see her trying to process her words. “It's just that, I need to focus on Olivia. You need to focus on Eleanor. I can't and will not be the other woman. I like you more than I should. I find it odd that fate keeps pushing us together but I can't do anything about it when you're with Eleanor. I respect your relationship. This is so frustrating!” She burries her head in her hands for a second. “How can I say I respect your relationship and yet I had sex with you? I make no sense.” She starts pacing around and I see people start to notice her conundrum.

Without thinking I pull her into the storage closet and shut the door.

“Kate.” I get her attention immediately. “You have to stop doing this. Yes we slept together, yes I'm in a relationship with someone else, but you have to admit that something is here between us.” I gesture to the both of us to try to make a point.

“But Louis, I know you're taken and I still put myself in that situation. A real woman doesn't do that with another woman's man.” She's extremely upset about this and I understand but I just can't seem to back off.

“I would never say you aren't a real woman. Look at everything you've overcome.” I try to point out the positives.

“Yes, but that doesn't make up for the fact that I helped someone cheat on someone they love. It's gross.” She pauses. “I will be nice around you and cordial because Olivia likes you so much, but Louis, honestly, I can't be around you without other people around until your single. I just don't trust myself to be a good person if I was put in that situation. Do you understand what I mean?” She furrows her brows in question.

“Yeah, I get it.” I really did. She was trying to be the better person. “But can I ask you one question?” She nods and I build up slight courage. I don't know why I'm still so nervous around her at times. “If I didn't have Eleanor?” I trail off, never finishing my question.

“Then we could give it a go.” She slightly smiles. “But I must get this chair back to Olivia.” She darts around me, grabbing a small chair and non-verbally asks me to open the door as I do.

-----------------

The night was fantastic. Just what everyone seemed to need to get their spirits up. We had tons of food and candy for kids and parents to enjoy, even a place to take pictures, almost like a small prom. One of Zayn's friends played music for us. Everyone had a blast.

Even Olivia and Kate. Kate danced with Olivia all night, the boys and I all cut in of course, taking turns dancing with Olivia. I found myself wanting to dance with Kate quite a bit but after what she said to me I realized I really needed to chose. I just wasn't ready for that choice yet.

I was hanging on to something that I didn't know if I wanted to hang on to. That was always my struggle. I don't like being single. I tend to bounce around from girl to girl. It's not a bad thing but I just can't seem to stay alone for long. Even in this industry, we're constantly busy and not always home I just can't be solo.

That's why I can't say goodbye to Eleanor. She's stuck with me through thick and thin. It's hard for me to just walk away. Not something I want to do quite yet. If we do break up I don't know if Kate would even want what I want. I would want a relationship with her but she's expressed it quite often that she wants to focus on Olivia which I certainly understand but it's just the thought of being alone that gets me.

I can't do it like Kate can.

It scares me.

I'm not ready to be alone.

Notes

Another shorter chapter, but rational Kate coming up! Think Louis' fears are true? And how cute is the children's ball? Predictions as to what happens next?

Thank you so much for sticking with me, twenty chapters! :) And as always, thank you to everyone whove read, voted, and commented.

Happy Sunday!
