The Heartbreakers

Chapter 3

Kandice's POV

"I'm so glad you've decided to change from your, shall we say, 'misfit' past Kandice! You're going to be such an unique addition to our group!" Sarah squealed while gripping my hands that were resting on the table.

I momentarily had an internal battle with myself about whether or not it was a good idea to yank my hand out of her grip and just slap the smug look right off her face.

Turns out the small part of me that said it was wrong, overpowered the rest of me as I just placed a tiny smile on my lips and cringed as the whole cafeteria table filled with girls squealed just like Sarah had.

There wasn't really anything wrong with these girls, but I just knew that they were using me.

Because I was now the infamous ex-girlfriend of Calum Hood.

Girls hated me for being with him for so long but loved that the break up was rather messy.

Guys loved that I was now single but hated that I wouldn't even give them the time of day.

Secretly, I was quite overwhelmed with everything that has happened today and it was only lunch time on the first day of the school year.

When it was clear to her that I wasn't going to say anything, she looked over my clothes and her smiled faded slightly.

"But we could possibly do something about your sense of style."

This time it was my turn to lessen my smile as I looked at her confused.

"What's wrong with my clothes?" I asked with a sour tone in my voice, surprisingly though she didn't pick up on my change of attitude.

Is this what popularity does to people?

Makes them stupid?

"Well, there just a little edgy that's all. You're not a punk girl any more, you're a popular girl."

I couldn't help but laugh bitterly at her words, I didn't ask for her to take me under her wing, she came to me and thinks that I'm just going to do whatever she says?

Hell no.

"Look Sarah I love that you're so caring but honestly if I ever want to move on from Calum then I'm going to do it my way."

Every girl at our table went silent as they stared at me confused.

"So you're not trying to get him back?" One of the others girls whispered with a shocked tone to her voice.

"No I'm not, but I still have the same taste in boys."

My words were true.

I didn't want Calum back, I just wanted to hurt him.

Sarah gripped my hands once again and I rolled my eyes as she looked at me in a very serious way.

"You can be whoever and do whoever you want. We still love you."

My eyes widened at her words and it was at that point that I realized they only wanted to keep me around because they knew I could easily find a new group of fake friends at the click of my fingers.

A smirk found it's way to my overly glossed lips as I thought of an idea.

"Can I borrow your eye liner?" I asked sweetly and she blinked at me surprised by my change of topic.

"Of course! Here!" She rummaged through her bag until she found the object before passing it to me without a second thought.

I held my phone up and used it as a mirror while I used her eye liner to draw a little heart under the corner of my right eye.

As I handed it back to her, her mouth hung open like she was about to disagree with what I had just done but was cut of by an alert sounding on her phone.

"It's time for us to socialize, we're going to do a lap around the school before the end of lunch. You in Kandice?" They all stood up and turned to me as they waited for my answer.

Truthfully I've had enough of guys grabbing my ass and girls glaring at me today.

I only wanted to catch the attention of a small group of misfits, not the whole school.

"Actually I'll pass, socializing isn't really my thing."

Sarah put on her overly sweet smile as she waved and said she would help me work on my people skills tomorrow.

I let out a sigh of relief and slumped back into my chair when they had finally left the cafeteria.

It was had work being such a girly girl.

It had only been about five minutes when I was scrolling Facebook and heard someone cough awkwardly in front of me.

Slowly locking my phone and taking a deep breath, I looked up to see Ashton eyeing me suspiciously.

I hadn't uttered one word to any of the boys since my break up so to say this was weird and awkward would be an understatement.

"Can I sit?" He asked while rubbing the back of his neck.

For some reason I still couldn't bring myself to say anything so I just nodded blankly and looked down at my locked phone that was still in my hands.

I didn't know what to do right now.

My plan wasn't completely ready so this was just making me nervous.

"Um." I stuttered out and his eyes instantly snapped to mine.

"So..." He then dragged out and I swallowed nervously.

"So..." I replied with and same thing and cringed with how stupid I sounded.

"We good?" He stated fast and I smiled slightly.

I wanted to be good with Ashton.

He was always my favourite beside Calum and he made it clear that he thought of me as his favourite too.

I still remember the day after prom last year when I was at home crying my eyes out because I had a huge fight Calum at the after party. Some girl was drunk and shoved her boobs into Calum's face, at that point I had no idea Calum was going to break up with me so I did what any normal girlfriend would do and yelled at him then ignored him. If I knew he was going to leave me then I wouldn't have been such a crazy bitch about it but by far the most memorable moment from that weekend was when Ashton showed up at my front door wearing a blonde wig and carrying a tub of my most loved ice cream.

He told me his name was Ashley for that whole night and that he was there to be a girl and let me vent out my problems that no one else would ever need to find out about.

Overall Ashton was an awesome best friend, but I lost him the day I lost my relationship.

"I guess so." I finally answered his question and he smiled sadly at me.

"You haven't talked to me once since, um well you know since when."

We both went silent for a minute and I could tell he was sorry for bringing it up.

"I've just been trying to keep myself busy." I lied and looked away from his eyes.

I barely do anything these days but he didn't need to know that.

"You mean like changing your hair completely?" He asked and I blushed while tucking a strand behind my ear, I was still getting use to the new hair myself and so far it was true that blondes really do have more fun.

"I like it." He whispered as he reached across the table to pull out the piece of hair I had tucked so it fell around the edge of my face.

Things suddenly felt a whole lot lighter in the way of tension between us, but one thing had also suddenly become clear to me.

Ashton was going to be my first victim.

"So you're sure everything is cool between us, right?" He asked and snapped me out of my thoughts.

"Totally." I stated while finally giving him a real smile.

He nodded rather happily as he got up and walked away without another word and I yet again slumped into my chair feeling overwhelmed and just the slightest bit guilty.

I never intended for Ashton to be first on my list.

But that was just how things were looking right now.

Sorry Ash.
