The Heartbreakers

Chapter 2

Calum's POV

The holidays seemed to vanish before my eyes and before I knew it, it was the first day of school.

I wasn't looking forward to today at all.

With all the overly preppy kids smiling wide at the thought of a new school year and the jocks fighting each other for the new team captains. Or the nerdy kids who would be rushing around and tripping over their own feet to try and be the teachers pet for the year.

And then of course there was the fact that I had to see Kandice for the first time in weeks.

I haven't seen her once since that summer party and frankly I was nervous about it.

We have lived across the road from each other our whole lives and yet I haven't seen her this past few weeks going out or checking the mail or anything.

It was strange and weird and unsettling in all rolled into one.

I sighed and slurped the last of my milk from the cereal I had eaten then yelled a goodbye to my mother. I picked up the old rundown skateboard from next to the front door and slung my back pack over my shoulder as I walked outside.

Just like every other day, I stopped in my tracks to look across the road but today my eyes widened as I saw Kandice's car pull out of her driveway. I barely saw anything as she sped down the street without a single care given towards me.

She use to give me a ride to school just about every morning, I don't understand how my skateboard can be so worn out when I barely used it until now.

I guess I can't expect her to offer me a ride any more when I'm the one that broke up with her.

If only she understood that I truly did have a reason for it.

I rolled my eyes at the thought of it all before dropping my board onto the pavement carelessly and jumping onto it while plugging in my headphones.

The school was only a few blocks from our street yet it felt like it took forever as I was getting more nervous by the second.

Just like every other day, I went around an extra block and meet the boys out the back of the school.

No one ever came out the back, all that was out here was a tiny little car park and grass.

The car park out the front was so large that I wouldn't be surprised if some of the newer students didn't even know about this place. The only person who actually parked out here was Kandice and that was because she wanted too.

I doubt she will any more though.

As I got closer I could see Michael and Luke trying to out do each other on their skateboards and Ashton was leaning against the brick wall with a smoke hanging loosely from his lips.

"Sup Cal." Luke muttered while focusing on his footwork as he flipped his board.

I nodded rather numbly as I walked over to Ash and he instantly handed me a cigarette.

"Dude I still can't get use to the idea of seeing you everyday without Kandy." Ash stated as his lit smoke moved with every word.

I huffed and closed my eyes to try and calm down but it wasn't working.

"If I'm not allowed to call her that any more then neither are you guys!"

They all stopped what they were doing to frown deeply at me.

"Hey you're the one that broke up with her, not us. She's still good with us."

I had to laugh at Luke's words.

He can be such an idiot at times.

"Well do you see her right now? No, because she's avoiding all of us!" I snapped and dropped my smoke to stomp on it before walking around the brick building and towards the front entrance.

"Yeah well that's your fault." Ash mumbled as he caught up to me, I just rolled my eyes and kept my mouth shut hoping that it would end the conversation.

It seemed to work because before any of them could question me further, Amber came running towards us and squealed as she wrapped her arms around my neck.

I hadn't seen Amber since the days just after my birthday, I was planning on using her for my needs but the look of hurt I saw on Kandice's face when she caught us just hurt to much to even look at Amber lustfully again.

I cringed slightly as she lifted my arm and placed it around her shoulders, I was going to move away but when I saw all the jealous looks and glares I was receiving, it got me excited to see what Kandice might do if she saw me with Amber again.

Maybe she would fight to get me back?

Well a guy can dream.

I sighed and walked in the direction of my locker as the rest followed behind me, things seemed a little different and frankly quite boring compared to how they seemed last year.

Maybe it was that our group of misfits and become smaller now and I just wasn't use to it yet.

We all stood around our lockers, which were thankfully close together, and talked loudly so we could hear each other over the crowded and noisy halls.

Suddenly the front doors opened and things quietened down.

I didn't understand why at first until I turned around and saw a girl standing at the front of the hall.

She had every pair of eyes on her all at once and I had to really look at her before I realized who she was.

It was Kandice, but she was different.

Her clothes were the same with the exception of her shirt showing more cleavage than she usually would.

But what was really different was two things.

First of all, her normal dark brown locks of hair had all been bleached a very light blonde which is why it was hard to recognise her, Her normal straightness to her hair was also gone as it flowed down her back in large curls.

And secondly was her attitude. She knew perfectly well that everyone was looking at her but she didn't met any ones eyes as she held her head high and flipped her newly done hair off her shoulder before she started to walk down the hall.

She walked straight past our group without so much as a glance and ignored every single guy that was trying to gain her attention.

What the hell had I caused?

Shocked and slightly turned on, I stayed completely silent and waited for the initial shock to wear off.

"I wanna be like her." Amber suddenly blurted out sounding just as shocked as me.

I tightened my arm around her shoulders and sighed before looking at her.

"No you don't, she's only doing that to try and hide how hurt she is." I stated simply and Ash narrowed his eyes at me.

"Now will you freaking tell us why you broke up with her? Because it seems to me like you made a mistake."

I pulled my lips into a tight line as I stared back at him.

No one can know why and I'm sticking by that.

"I can't." I answered bluntly and he bitterly laughed before turning to watch Kandice at her locker that was down the hall.

"You can't or you won't?" Michael asked and the rest raised their eyebrows as they waited for my answer.

"Both." I whispered and sighed as they all glared.

Things went awkwardly silent as everyone seemed to be mad at me before Amber suddenly spoke up again making her presence known again.

"I still want to be like her."
