I sat on the edge of my bed, swinging my legs back and forth as I waited for Jason’s text to let me know he had arrived. “What are you all prettied up for?” Autumn asked as she entered the room, kicking off her shoes. “Tell me it’s not for him.”

“No,” I rolled my eyes. “Jason and I are hanging out today.” I shrugged and jumped as my phone buzzed.

“Jason? Your ex-boyfriend?” I nodded and checked my phone. “Will you be okay with that?”

Niall: Are you still going on that date today? There’s still room for you here… ;)

Katie: Sorry, Ni, but he drove two hours to go to this carnival with me today. I have to go. I may take you up on that offer another time, though (;

“Yeah, it’s been like three years. I’m over it.” I shrugged as my phone buzzed again.

“Alright… good luck.” She smiled genuinely at me as I jumped off the bed.

Jason: Hey, I’m here. Waiting downstairs. Xx

“See you later, Autumn.” I waved and skipped over to the elevator. “Hey!” I smiled and hugged my old friend when I saw him waiting. “Ready?”

“Oh, yeah!” He smiled and took my hand, leading me out to his car. The whole ride to the carnival, Jason and I talked about school and really anything that came up. “So I heard there were some pretty nasty rumors going around about you for a while.”

“Yeah, but we cleared things up.” I shrugged. “For a few days, I was ‘loose’. It was pretty interesting.” No need to get into the details about my sex life now. We walked around the carnival for a while, chatting, laughing, and playing silly games to win prizes.

“Hold on!” Jason handed me his giant stuffed Tigger and grabbed the giant hammer that came with the ‘Test Your Strength’ game. “The teddy bear’s yours if I win.” He smiled and brought the hammer down as hard as he possible could. The bell rang and he claimed his prize.

“Thank you.” I smiled and held it close as he took his Tigger. “So, what’s been going on with—oh my god. Are you kidding me?” I groaned as I saw the familiar blond hair walking towards us. “This way, hurry.” I said and grabbed Jason’s sleeve, but it was too late.

“Katie? What are you doing here?” Niall laughed and swung his arm around my shoulders. I could have murdered him.

“I was about to ask you the same question, Niall.” I gritted my teeth at him. “Jason, this is my friend Niall. Niall, this is Jason.” I introduced them. “Niall was just leaving, weren’t you, Niall?”

“Of course not! I’m here with a few guys from the fraternity… I know! We should all hang out together.”

“One minute, Jason.” I excused us and pulled Niall to the side.

Niall’s POV

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Katie scolded and crossed her arms over the teddy bear that Jason guy got her.

“I’m just watching out for you.” I shrugged and eyed the guy who made my blood boil for no apparent reason. “I don’t like the look of that guy. He just wants in your pants.”

“Oh, and you don’t?” Katie’s reaction caught me by surprise for a second.

“That’s completely different. You’re mine, remember?”

“Technically, I’m not. You have no right to come and interrupt my dates.”

“I thought this wasn’t a date.”

“You know what I mean.” She said, placing a hand on her hip. I took a minute to look her up and down. She looked damn sexy in her skinny jeans and tight fit sweater. “I’ll see you in class tomorrow, Ni.” She sighed and walked off.

“Wait! Katie!” I went after her and grabbed her arm. “Sorry,” I pursed my lips.

“Yeah, just get out of here.” She cracked a smile. I nodded and walked off, and as soon as I was turned around, I felt Katie kick my ass… literally. I turned around and gave her a shocked expression. She shrugged innocently and went back over to her friend.

Katie’s POV

“Sorry about him… he’s a bit protective of me.” I sighed.

“Don’t worry about it.” Jason smiled and gave me a hug. I took his hand in mine as we walked around some more. We played multiple different games, and he won me several stuffed animals, which were all going up in my room as soon as I got back to campus.

“Thanks for going to the carnival with me, Katie.” Jason smiled as he walked me to my dorm room. “I had a lot of fun.”

“Me too.” I smiled and unlocked my door. “Why don’t you come in?” I offered and switched on the light. Jason followed me in as I set the stuffed animals on my empty book shelves. “Do you want some tea or anything?” I offered.

“Nah, I’m good.” He shrugged and helped me up onto my bed before jumping up on it himself. “Your room looks nice.” Jason commented as he looked at the fairy lights around the room.

“Thanks, the fairy lights were…” I was cut off. Jason’s lips were on mine, kissing me softly. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer to him, before slowly lowering me onto my back. I pushed him off of me and looked up at him. “What are you doing?”

“I miss you, Katie. I miss us.” I put my hand on his chest to stop him from leaning down to kiss me again.

“You broke up with me.” I sat up and moved away from him. “In fact, you broke up with me for one of my best friends. So not only did you break up with me, you ruined a friendship.” I shook my head. “I can’t believe I’m even having this discussion with you again. You need to go.” I said and sat back on my bed.

“But—“

“Just go.” Jason jumped off the bed, took a glance back at me, and walked out the door. I called Autumn in an angry rage. “Can you believe the little fucker tried to get back together with me!?”

“Jason!?”

“Yes! He told me how he ‘missed me’ and ‘missed us’. That’s complete bullshit!” I jumped off my bed and began to pace the room. “Did he think it was funny or something!?”

“Maybe Niall put him up to this…”

“Autumn—“

“Seriously! He wants to see if you’ll listen to his bullshit ‘you only belong to me’ rule, and so he put your ex up to it!”

“Autumn, stop! I get that you’re not very fond of him, but come on. You and I both know he wouldn’t stoop that low. He doesn’t even know Jason is my ex.” I rolled my eyes.

“You and I both know very well that Niall would stoop that low.” I stayed quiet while she ranted. “And another thing—“

“Autumn, if you’re done I have homework to do.” I sighed, pulling out my English book. She sighed and we said our goodbyes before hanging up.

Niall’s POV

Niall: What are you wearing? ;)

Katie: I’m not answering that question, you perv L.O.L.

Niall: Then what aren’t you wearing?

Katie: Niall I’m trying to study. Not now, yeah?

Niall: Then when, princess?

I knew it drove Katie crazy when I called her princess. Especially in bed…

Katie: Never ;)

“What do you have over Katie, mate?” I looked up from Katie’s text and towards where the voice was coming from.

“What are you talking about?” I asked Jason as he stopped in front of me.

“I know you’ve got something on her, man. That’s why she doesn’t want to get back together with me.” My insides froze. He was Katie’s ex? I looked him up and down, knowing there was no way in hell I had any competition with him.

“Man, you have no idea what you’re talking about.” I rolled my eyes and replied to Katie.

Niall: For some reason, I just don’t believe that, babe.

“Oh, I think I do.” I looked back up at him. His face was red with fury. “You have to have something over her. What is it? Sex? Racy pictures? Whatever it is, stop. She’s mine, and I’m getting her back.” Jason started to walk off.

“You’re wrong.” I stood up from the chair I was sitting in and rolled up my sleeves.

“Excuse me?” I held up a finger and checked my phone.

Katie: You could be right, you could be wrong. Only one way to find out ;)

Niall: Oh, fuck you ;P

“You heard me right.” I shrugged, shoving my hands into my pockets. “You’re. Wrong.”

“What makes you think that?”

Katie: Time and place ;)

I smirked as I tossed him my phone. As he read the conversation his face went from the smug expression he was wearing, to complete disbelief. I nodded as he looked up at me, rage written all over his face. He lunged for me and I dodged easily, causing his fist to hit the wall behind me. I took my phone from him and shoved it in my pocket. “That’s why you don’t go for the obvious attack, mate. You break your hand.” I said and punched him square in his jaw.

“You little shit!” He yelled and went for me again. I put my fist out and punched his stomach hard, causing him to double over and fall to the ground.

“See ya around, mate.” I smirked and walked off like nothing had happened.
