It Never Ends

You Can't Do That.

*illianna’s POV*

I was sat in the cafeteria with Ariana and a few members of the guys and girls team.

We were all sitting near the windows located at the back of the lunchroom. The window section belonged to the soccer team. And everyone in the school knew not to sit there.

The whole team sat in a pattern. Guy then girl.

It seemed that each soccer girl had her soccer guy, and I was just the lonely one waiting for her own man.

Zayn was with Ariana, while Liam, Niall, and Harry were happy with their own girlfriends who played on the team with us.

I was sitting at the edge of table, slurping down my protein shake. Ariana was sitting in front of me with Zayn next to her.

“You should really stop drinking those. It’s a bad meal supplement.” Ariana informed me as I threw the empty bottle in the nearby trashcan.

“I’ve told you about overdosing yourself on those Lily. When you drink those, you don’t eat. And you need to eat.” Zayn replied, agreeing with Ariana.

“It’s better than the food they serve here.” I shrugged, pulling out my algebra notes to study for the test I had next.

“But you drink them all the time.” Ariana inquires.

“It’s a good meal replacement.” I shrug again.

“illianna.” Zayn warns.

“I’m studying.” I tell, pointing my finger at him to quiet him.

I will admit that I sort of went through a stage of not eating. That’s why I turned my eating habits to protein shakes.

There’s a reason why Zayn doesn’t like me to drink them. And that’s the same reason why Zayn doesn’t like me to date.

Logarithmic notes began to surface throughout my mind and I all I could think was receiving another F on the test. Algebra II was not my subject.

I used to be really good at math, before someone decided to add the alphabet into the mix.

I knew I wasn’t going to learn the material, but if I failed this test, I wouldn’t play in our next game which was today. And the game today determined if we would make it to playoffs. And the playoffs were something I gave my life for.

The boys’ team also had their playoff qualification game tonight. It will be their third year in a row in the playoffs if they pull off a win tonight.

“There goes Louis.” Ariana says, elbowing me.

Louis enters the cafeteria with Jenna gripping on to his hand. All of the other varsity athletes in this school and Jenna just had to go for Louis.

I’d be lying if I said that Louis wasn’t worth my time.

It’s been a week since we became friends, and ever since then, Jenna has been right up Louis’s backside.

I pretend that it doesn’t bother me. I wish that I couldn’t feel anything when I see them together, but the more I see them, the more it makes me feel hatred for Louis.

“Him and Jenna look good together.” I lie.

“Right. Just like making I to the playoffs will be easy.” Ariana replies sarcastically.

Ever since I told Ariana about Louis coming over to our house to talk to me, she always makes remarks about us being together or how we should have always been together.

“So I’m assuming that Louis and Jenna are official?” Niall questions.

“They have to be. The two are never away from each other.” Harry adds.

I continue to stare down at my notes.

“No. It’s Jenna who is never away from Lou.” Ariana admits.

“I’m going to get a head start to algebra.” I quickly say packing all my notes away.

I sling my backpack over my shoulder and stand up from the lunch table.

“I’ll come with you.” Ariana invites herself, kissing Zayn goodbye.

Gag.

I walk past Louis and feel his eyes on me, darting into my back as I walk from him.

He is sitting with Jenna and Nelly at the cheerleader table, next to the tennis table and baseball table.

The cheerleaders were dressed in their sweat suit outfits, baseball players in their varsity jackets, tennis players in their tennis shirts, and Louis being the odd man out with his training pants and our Adidas soccer jackets provided to us.

All soccer players wore the same attire on game days.

“Is it you seeing Jenna with Louis or you not saying yes to him that is upsetting you?” Ariana bluntly asks, getting straight to the point.

I should have seen this coming so being honest with her is all that I have to do.

“Not agreeing to be his girlfriend.” I sigh as we exit the lunchroom.

“You need to talk to him Lily. He should be with you instead of some cheerleader. What does Jenna have that you don’t?”

“I can’t talk to him. He’s already with Jenna. And I’m not going to have him break up with her because I’m feeling jealous.”

“Forget Jenna.” Ariana snaps. “Toe to toe that girl couldn’t hold him down even if she tried.”

“Your bad.” I giggle.

“What?” She laughs. “You know it’s true. Why would Louis have a girl who’s pumped up with muscle and spends her free time eating lettuce?” She mocks Jenna.

I remember it from the time Jenna and Nelly were bashing on all the soccer girls.

“Well why would he have a girl who doses herself on supplements?” I mumble.

Ariana looks at me shocked. I give her a quick wink before turning down into the math hallway and scrunching up nose as two students came from the outside.

“Lily, I’m not asking you, I’m telling you that you are going to stop drinking those shakes. Because Zayn is right, you barely even eat.” Ariana explains.

“It doesn’t matter.” I sigh. “Do you know who we’re playing tonight?” I ask, wanting to change the subject.

“I think we’re playing Claremont High, and I’m not finished speaking to you about this.” Ariana answers.

We pass a staircase and I notice a couple up above, kissing.

I pull out my phone to take a selfie with them, a game that Ariana and I used to play.

Every time we saw a kissing couple, we would take a picture with them without the couple noticing.

Ariana sees the couple and we sneakily make our way up the stairs.

We get closer, and I notice that the girl looks awfully familiar from behind. And that the guy is dressed in the soccer game day attire. And they are eating each other’s faces off.

I stop walking. I know the couple.

It’s Louis and Jenna.

Ariana figures out that it’s them and begins to walk me back down the stairs. For an obvious reason, my chest becomes insanely tight.

“You can’t do that!” Ariana yells, startling them.

She grabs my hand and runs us away before either of them can see who said it. We run to the classroom where I am supposed to be in and Ariana immediately calms me.

“I’m sorry Lily.” She whispers.

“Don’t worry about it Ariana. It’s over. Louis and I are never going to happen. He’s happy, and so am I.” I say, fighting back the clump I have in my throat.

I felt like a fool. I told Louis that I loved him, and seeing him kissing Jenna was never supposed to happen. But what could I do?

“I’ll fight Jenna.” Ariana encourages.

“I know you will. But I’m not concerned about her.” I breathe. “We have to focus on tonight. We need to make it playoffs.”

Ariana’s face changes from sorrow to excitement.

“We got this.” Ariana says, interlocking her fingers, cracking her knuckles.

I blink the rest of my tears away and slump down into my desk, smiling widely.

I wasn’t worrying about Jenna or Louis. Only a certain group of girls.

The girls from Claremont High.

“Hey ladies.” A voice calls to us. I look up. Louis comes strolling in the classroom.

“Louis.” Ariana and I nod.

“Why are you smiling so hard?” Louis asks amused, a smile forming on his face.

I smirk and look at Ariana.

I guess it’s time to let Louis know how I feel about him now.

“I’m smiling. But you’re not the reason anymore.” I reply casually.

Louis’s smile drains from his face. He looks at me crookedly, before walking out without saying a word.

“Got ‘em!” Ariana chuckles loudly.

I began laughing and stand up to hug Ariana. I love this girl. She is my best friend and I will defend her to my death.

Death was already put on Louis, by me.

And tonight, death will be put on the Claremont girls.

Notes

"Best friends are the one's who would take a bullet for you, but they are also the one's who you constantly feel that you could put a bullet through."

Does anyone else have a friendship that can be described like that?

That's how I describe my best friendship.
