Overworked

Maddie’s P.O.V
Lis’ 6th Birthday Party: 16th October 2027
I finished curling my hair and turned around to Jacob who looked so worried.
“What if they hate me? They’re your kids, if they don’t approve then you’ll finish things with me.” He sighed making me laugh. Then he looked up at me like I was crazy.
“You’re better than Emma any day babe. They’ll love you don’t worry about it just like Josh loves me.” I teased.
“He does love you. When’s Maddie coming round again?” He smiled.
“Right, we should get going or they’ll kill me. Urm, you might have to face a few of my friends too, you’ve met Louis, Eleanor and Belle right?”
“Yeah babe. Who else is there?”
“Oh you’re going to have fun.” I smirked picking up my bag. Jacob got up from the bed and kissed me quickly and then we went down to my car. “I can’t believe I have to go back to this damn house.” I said. We drove to Harry’s and I sighed when I pulled up outside. “Time to face the music. How do I look?” I asked.
“Gorgeous, as always, let’s go.” He got out of the car. Someone’s eager. I saw Harry look out of the window and just smiled to myself getting out of the car. I took Jake’s hand in mine and walked up the path. I rang the doorbell and Harry answered a few moments later with his arm around Emma.
“Hey, where’s the birthday girl?” I questioned and Harry told me she was in the garden.
“You ready for this?” I asked Jake as we got to the back door.
“Yeah, like you said, it’ll be fine and I already hate the blonde even though I haven’t spoken to her.” He laughed.
“I hate her too don’t worry.” I said and went into the garden. Melissa turned around and ran to me.
“Mummy!” She said as I picked her up.
“Hey princess, Happy Birthday! How’s your party so far?”
“Amazing! I’m upset that Auntie Eleanor and Uncle Louis can’t come though.” She pouted. El and Louis are kind of in the mourning phase. They lost their baby at 6 months and they were devastated. I haven’t really seen them since.
“Baby, this is Jacob, Mummy’s boyfriend.” I said to Lis.
“Hi Jacob!” Lis smiled at him.
“Hiya darling,” Jake replied making Lis’ smile grow even more.
“Jacob has a son called Josh who is the same age as you honey, anyway, you enjoy your party and I’m going to go and find Brooklyn and Adam.” I put her down. She ran back off to her friends. “You can either stay down here with the bitch and idiot or come and face the teens.” I told Jacob.
“I think I’ll face the kids.” He smiled.
“Alright, let’s go.” I said dragging him towards the stairs. I went up to Brooklyn’s room where I could hear her talking to Adam. I knocked on the door and opened it. “Surprise!” I smiled.
“Mum!” They both jumped up.
“Hey guys. Are you alright?” I hugged them.
“Please come home. We hate Emma.” Brooke told me.
“Me too honey. But I have someone I want you to meet and he’s a lot nicer than Emma I promise.” I said and Jacob came in. “This is my boyfriend Jake.” I told them.
“You must be Brooklyn and Adam; I’ve heard a lot about you two.” Jake greeted them.
“Was it good or bad?” Adam questioned.
“Good, you sound like really cool kids.” Jake replied.
“That’s good then, I already like you better than Emma.” Brooklyn confessed and I laughed.
“I told you they’d like you.” I poked Jake.
“But don’t hurt my mum like Dad did please, we hated seeing her like that.” Adam said. Referring to my breakdowns a few months ago,
“Let it go Adam.” I sighed.
“You were in hospital for weeks! It was Dad’s fault for being with Emma!” He argued.
“Hey, let’s not argue okay, go and play with Lis. It’s her birthday.” I instructed and they went downstairs. Jake and I followed after them.
“Long time no see Maddie.” Perrie said when we got downstairs.
“Yeah, I’ve been busy Pez, sorry.” I hugged her.
“Don’t apologise. I’m still not talking to him. How are you?” She gestured over to where Harry was with Emma.
“I’m good now. I don’t know where I’d be if I didn’t meet Jake.” I held Jake’s hand.
“It’s nice to meet you. I’m Perrie, I take it you haven’t met my husband,” she shook his hand. “Zayn!” Perrie called him over.
“Maddie!” He hugged me.
“Hey Malik,” I smiled and Perrie introduced Jake to Zayn.
“I hope you make her happier then Haz did. He’s been a total prick lately. But don’t hurt her or you’ll have me to answer to.” Zayn warned Jake.
“I won’t, you’re next in line behind Adam.” Jacob laughed.
“Ahahaha,” Perrie burst out laughing. “Adam’s amazing. They’ll love you in no time don’t worry. Especially with gold digger over there hanging around.” Perrie reassured him.
“Perrie Malik I can hear you!” Harry said.
“Don’t give a fuck, I hate you!” She replied sticking her middle finger up at him.
“Pez, you don’t have to be so harsh, I’m over it.” I said.
“No Mads, he’s not getting away with this. If he wasn’t with her that night, you wouldn’t have ended up in hospital!”
“But I did. Anyway, stop making things awkward for Zayn.” I said noticing Zayn looking at Harry. “Where are Liam and Danielle?” I asked.
“Over there, Niall’s outside and Lou and El are still mourning.” She answered.
“Thanks babe.” I hugged her again and went over to Liam and Danielle. We had a conversation with them for a while and then I introduced Jake to Niall.
“Lastly, Harry and Emma,” I sighed. We went back inside and over to Harry and Emma. “You’ve done a great job.” I said to Harry, ignoring Emma.
“Em helped. Most of it was her idea.” He told me. I take it back. “Anyway, you’ve met Emma.” He said.
“Yep, the girl you swore you hate, yeah I’ve met her.”
“For fuck sake Maddie, grow up! Anyone would think you’re jealous. We’re done alright. Over, finished, I’m happy with Emma so get over yourself!” He spat.
“Don’t talk to her like that.” Jake stepped in.
“Babe, don’t.” I squeezed his hand.
“And who are you?” Harry asked.
“Her boyfriend, Jacob, nice to meet you, but it won’t be if you keep speaking to her like that.” Jacob shook Harry’s hand. I’m really glad that he can still do that even after what Harry just said.
“Anyway, I’ll leave you and your go-girlfriend, to it and go and check on El and Louis. Have you even spoken to them lately?”
“Yeah, I spoke to them yesterday thanks.”
“Finally forgiven you for putting me in hospital have they?”
“You put yourself in that fucking hospital, not me. You were the one that got jealous and decided to go all psychotic and cut yourself so deep that it got infected.” He said. Jake tensed up next to me. Harry irritates me so much. I pulled Jake and walked out of the front door towards El and Louis’.
“You alright?” Jake asked.
“Yeah,” I lied. To be honest, what Harry said hurt a lot.
“No you’re not. C’mon. You’re not a psycho.” Jake wiped the tear that escaped my eye. We got to El and Louis’ and I let myself in. They were both sitting on the couch, not speaking. They’ve been doing this for ages.
“Hey, how you feeling today?” I asked.
“Shit. It sucks to lose a child.” Louis said.
“Awh, I feel so sorry for you.” I hugged him. “It was bad enough when Harry got custody of Brooklyn but to have a child just ripped from you like that must be so hard.” I sat down.
“What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” El turned to me.
“I had something in my eye.” I said.
“Bullshit. Harry called her a psycho.” Jake told them.
“He did what?!” Louis raised his voice.
“Forget it. It doesn’t matter.” I tried to dismiss it.
“Let me guess, you said about being in hospital, he said it was your own fault and you shouldn’t have gone psychotic and cut?” Louis said.
“How’d you know?”
“Said the same to us yesterday. He said you should’ve been in a mental hospital instead. It was horrid. Louis nearly punched him.” El answered. Ouch, that stung.
Harry’s P.O.V
“What did you do to her?” Liam stormed over to me and Emma.
“Just said the truth,” I replied.
“Which was?”
“That she’s a psycho.” I admitted and Emma giggled next to me.
“She is not a psycho. She’s been through a tough time and unlike some people she doesn’t find a way out of it by fucking a gold digger.” He said with gritted teeth.
“Why does everyone think Emma is a gold digger and Maddie is a fucking saint? She’s got that Jacob guy.”
“Maddie is way better then Emma will ever be. Maddie also has 5 children with you.”
“I don’t care about her anymore, she can live her life and I’ll live mine.”
“You’re a complete dick. So if she told you she was pregnant with Jake’s baby you wouldn’t care?”
“She’s on the pill.” I said quickly.
“And how do you know that?”
“Because we hooked up when we first split up remember, I told her to go on it and she listened.”
“What if she’s stopped?”
“Well I wouldn’t care. It’s her life. She’s just the mother of my children now. I don’t love her, why should I? She’s the one that ended things.”
“With good reason! She didn’t want to hurt you. She was going away for a long time and she didn’t want you to worry about her. It doesn’t mean she stopped loving you. She proved that when she nearly killed herself seeing you two together, Louis and Eleanor won’t fucking speak to you and neither will Perrie. Belle just pretends you’re not even around and Niall and Zayn are awkward because of it. I’m sick of seeing you and Dani hates that she’s stuck in between you both. I hope you’re proud because you’ve lost Maddie and your friends. She,” he looked at Emma. “Better be worth it. She’s gonna be the reason our band splits up.” He finished and walked back over to Danielle.
“Why are your friends such dicks?” Emma asked.
“Because they care about Maddie. C’mon babe, we were together for 13 years. They love her. They won’t like you because they say you’re replacing her. Maddie was the one that finished things with me, not the other way around. Just forget it.” I said.
“Your kids hate me too. Melissa was nicer to that Jacob guy who she’d only just met then she was to me.” She sighed.
“You’re in the position their mum used to be in. It’s weird for them, especially now that Maddie hardly ever sees them. They miss her and you can’t blame them, she’s their mum and you will never be able to take her place no matter how hard you try. They love Maddie and they’re trying to cope with you being around. It probably doesn’t help that you and I being together put their mum in hospital for a month.” I tried to reassure her. I don’t know who the hell I’m trying to kid. I love Maddie; the kids love Maddie and hate Emma. But Maddie has that Jacob guy now. I like Emma, she’s nice when she’s not bitching, really nice, but Maddie is perfect. I hated seeing her eyes fill with tears and then Jacob running after her to comfort her. I want to be back there again.
