Never Let Go

Chapter 2

Amity's POV
"Yes yes I'm aware that you scheduled your appointment last week," I soothe through the phone that's cradled precariously between my ear and neck as I shuffle through files.
"Figure it out Amy!" His voice snarks through the phone as he hangs up.
"It's Amity," I mumble. Stupid pop stars and their stupid schedules always thinking they can do whatever the hell they want. I pull the phone away from my ear and slam it down into the receiver, sinking into my chair. The files drop out of my hands and onto the cluttered desk.
"Uh Amity?" A meek voice squeaks from the doorway. I glance up from the papers in front of me to see my assistant, Kelly, looking at me nervously.
"Yes Kelly?" I sigh, leaning my elbows on the glass desk.
"Your three o clock is here," she stutters out, shuffling through the papers in her hands.
"Three o clock?" I ask. I didn't think I had any more appointments today.
"Uh yeah," she mumbles.
"Oh for goodness sakes it's me!" Liam appears in the doorway, a grin spreading across his face. "Thanks for trying, Kelly," he says to her warmly. She stutters out a you're welcome before rushing out of the room, her face beet red.
"Hi," I say dryly before turning back to the spread of photos and papers in front of me. I ignore him as he approaches my desk, instead I shuffle through the various layouts placed in front of me, trying to find the one I need.
"So how's your day?" He asks tentatively, clearly sensing the stress I'm under right now,
"Just fantastic," I roll my eyes as my phone rings again.
"Amity Landon," I say immediately, picking up the phone.
"Ms. Landon? We have a problem down at the wedding photo shoot," a raspy voice says through the phone.
"What is it?" I ask sharply. The last thing I need right now is another problem.
"You know the Vera Wang dress?" The voice asks awkwardly.
"Yes," I sigh.
"It's not here."
"What do you mean it's not there!" I almost shout, my temper rising.
"It's just not here!" The person responds frantically.
I take a deep breath, trying to calm myself.
"Call Jessica in fashion, have her get Vera on the phone," I try to control my tone. "Call me back only if you still don't have the dress."
"Alright," the person says and I slam down the phone.
"Everything okay?" Liam asks tentatively. He's made himself comfortable in one of the two black chairs across from my desk, his legs stretched out in front of him.
"I don't want to talk about it," I mutter and bury my head in my hands, trying to fight off the growing headache developing in the front of my skull.
I hear him get up and sense his presence behind me. His warm hands run along my shoulders and he massages gently.
"It'll be okay," he soothes and I feel myself relax back into his touch.
"I'm sorry for ignoring you there," I say and lean my head back into him, my eyes fluttering shut.
"It's okay," he says and presses a kiss to my forehead.
"What do you need anyways?" I ask.
"Can't I just want to see my fiancé at her fancy new job?" He asks.
I open my eyes and quickly turn to face him.
"Usually you have other things to do," I say honestly. We don't really have a habit of visiting each other at work.
"Maybe I'm trying to change that," he mutters and pulls me out of my chair. "Future Mrs. Payne."
"Liam," I groan and he grabs both my hands. I lean back against my desk as he stands in front of me.
"Yes?" He asks innocently.
"We've already talked about this," I sigh and avert my eyes from his pleading look.
"I want to talk about it again," he says softly but his tone is demanding.
"What more is there to talk about?" I say irritated. "I'm not changing my name to Amity Payne."
"Why not?" He asks, dropping my hands from his.
"Because I don't want to, " I cross my arms over my chest. I can't believe he actually came to my place of work to have this argument even though we have discussed it a billion times already.
"Why not?" He pries, crossing the room to look out the big glass window.
"Amity Payne?" I say with distaste. "My first name means kindness and love. You seriously want me to change my last name to Payne?"
"I don't think people will contemplate the technicalities of your name that much!" He grumbles angrily.
"Why don't you change your name to Liam Landon?" I ask sassily. He turns to face me with a spark of anger in his eyes.
"Because that's not traditional!" He scoffs. "And because people know me by my name."
"So you're telling me that I should change my name just because it's traditional?" I ask.
"God why do you have to be so difficult!" He nearly shouts.
"Because I don't think I should have to change my name just because it's traditional. This is the twenty first century! And people know me by my name as well!" I say, my voice rising.
"What will people think if you don't!" He yells.
"Oh please," I scoff. "You act like me not changing my name is some huge political issue. Next thing you'll be telling me is that I need to quit my job to stay at home and bear children!"
He looks down sheepishly and I gasp.
"Oh my god you want me to quit my job!" I say horrified.
He regains some of his indignation and looks back at me angrily. "Yes, I do want you to quit your job. You are so stressed out and unhappy!"
"This is my dream job," I bite and turn around to stack up the papers on my desk.
"Well I have my dream job and I'm a whole lot happier than you," he points out and walks around to stand on the opposite side of my desk.
"Well not everyone can be you," I say angrily.
He's about to respond but the phone ringing cuts him off.
"Don't answer it," he warns.
I glare at him and pick up the phone without breaking my gaze.
"Amity Landon," I say into the receiver. Liam's jaw clenches and he crosses his arms over his chest.
"Oh um it's me, Kelly," Kelly's meek voice squeaks. "I just wanted to let you know that Mrs. David stopped by with the files for the wedding issue."
"I will come get them in a moment," I say through gritted teeth and slam the phone down.
"Amity," Liam sighs, the tension draining out of him. "I just want people to know that you're mine."
Wordlessly, I lift up my left hand, pointing to the diamond ring on my finger.
"It's kind of obvious," I say plainly.
"Still, I see the way guys look at you," he grumbles.
I can't help but laugh. "Liam, millions of girls have thrown themselves at you and I'm not forcing you to change your name, you aren't even wearing a ring yet!"
He contemplates my words, clearly not realizing this until now. "It's not the same." He says finally.
"How so?" I sink into my chair in exhaustion.
"It just isn't," he sighs.
"Maybe you should just go," I say wearily, shaking my head in defeat.
"Yeah," he whispers. "Maybe."
I get to my feet and walk around the desk until I'm standing in front of him. I wrap my arms around his neck and he looks down at me sadly.
"I love you," I say sincerely and his arms wrap around my waist.
He kisses me lightly on the lips and pulls back slightly. "I love you too."
With that he turns around and walks out of my office.
