Unwanted

Him Again

It was mid-september when I next heard of One Direction. I was well into school by then, and my mother was thrilled to hear I was doing well in school for the first time in-well, forever. Maddie and I were as close as ever, and I had pretty much stopped thinking about the encounter I had with Louis, unless I heard the occasional One Direction song, which would make me smile a bit, but I wasn't really surprised that Louis hadn't called me. He was a superstar, after all, and I guessed he was working hard.

The fact that he hadn't called me back seemed to affect Maddie more than it did me. When the subject arose during one of our late night talks, she'd get all excited, still trying to cling to the hope that we'd meet One Direction and become their best of friends, and her thick mane of blonde hair would cling to her face, her cheeks flushed red as her eyes lit up. I'd merely laugh, wishing I could be as hopeful as her one day. But really, I was just negative, and I couldn't help it. I still can't. I just can't imagine anything good happening to me, even through everything that happened, I still expect the worse. Which is why Maddie was such a good person to have around. She made me smile, laugh, and sometimes, when she was convincing enough, she'd make me believe that good things could happen.

On September 21st, life finally proved Maddie right. We were walking back from an Introduction to Philosophy class, when my ringtone started playing. Maddie raised her eyebrows, knowing mighty well that the only person to ever call me was my mother, and she had called before class. Once I got out my phone, the screen showed an unknown number. I answered, looking at Maddie, who was waiting nearby. I pressed the phone to my ear, an all too familiar yet unfamiliar voice booming from the speaker.

"Violet, my love! It's Louis, I'm sorry I haven't called or sent you a message beforehand, we've just been so busy! Anyways, I'm calling because we're coming into town next week, and we have a show Friday, then the week off, so I thought you could come to our show and we'd have a little time extra to actually talk and not in a plane," he explained in an excited voice. My mouth was hanging open, and Maddie, having heard every single word, was silently freaking out next to me. I was speechless for the most part, but snapped back to it realizing Louis was waiting for an answer on the line.

"Wow, really? I really wasn't expecting this tonight, Louis," I started, still incredulous.

"I hope this isn't too out of the blue, but you seem like a fun girl, and I'd love to hang out when the chance comes up," he explained himself hastily.

"Hey no, you seem like the friend I'd like to have around," I replied, grinning to Maddie. She looked at me urgently, and I remembered the concert. "Hey, for the concert, d'you think I could bring along my good friend?" I asked hopefully. Louis said it was fine, and we talked for a while more, smoothing out the details. We'd receive our VIP tickets and backstage passes in the mail sometime this week, and after the show we'd have some time to see Louis. He told me he would text me whenever he'd be available during his time off.
As soon as I was off the phone, it was grand time to fangirl with Maddie. After our fair share of screaming in the middle of the quad, we headed to the dorm rooms, talking excitedly about the concert.

"I still can't believe after all this time he's called me, and is actually considering me to become his friend!" I said, still amazed by the phone call I received.

"I can. I told you so, Vi," Maddie replied, laughing as we sat on my bed. As it started to sink in, Maddie and I prepared all the next week for the biggest concert of our lives.

"Vi, I have no clue what I'm going to wear," Maddie said in a distressed voice as she paced around our room. I rolled my eyes at her, smiling. Madison had one of those supermodel bodies. She was tall and graceful and skinny, and anything she wore made her look extravagant. I told her several times that she could wear a brown bag and rock it. While she scurried around trying to find something to wear, I sat on my bed, watching her. It was quite amusing, actually. She always got so worked up over things. She finally decided on her outfit, which was a nice dress that fit her perfectly. Once she had decided on her own dress, her focus was me.
"What are you wearing to the concert?" she urged, and I shrugged, not really preoccupied by the question.
"Probably the usual, Maddie. I'm not really good with outfits and stuff. Skinny jeans and a shirt, I guess," I said, reading a philosophy book, not really paying attention. She sighed, knowing that it would take a miracle for me to slip into something highly uncomfortable and expensive. It just wasn't me.
It was only a few hours until the concert, and Maddie was already busy getting her thick blonde hair styled to her liking. We had received our tickets yesterday, and their glossy shine made me grin. I snapped a picture and posted it on Instagram, lounging on my bed. Maddie was bustling around, and I was still in my pyjamas. I tried to start a movie on Netflix but Maddie glared at me so hard I decided to start getting ready.
An hour later, Maddie and I were truly polar opposites. She was all dressed up, her hair curled perfectly and her outfit extravagantly accessorized. I, on the other hand, had my long brown hair in a lazy bun, and was sporting light wash skinny jeans and a simple muscle tank with a flannel shirt over it. We grinned at each other knowing how mismatched we were.
The cab we called pulled up to Wembley Stadium an hour and a half before the concert started, and we got out, clinging to each other. I double checked that we had the tickets, and we walked in front of the huge line of girls waiting to get in the concert, flashing our tickets to the doorman. He called up a member of the security staff who took us backstage. It was absolutely surreal. We entered a sort of open space right next to the stage where lots of people were bustling around, extremely busy. A busy looking woman approached us.

"You're Violet, right? Louis' friend?" she asked bluntly. I nodded. She motioned curtly for us to follow her, and we did. We stood somewhere, then saw Louis emerge from a room. He walked over to us in big steps, his arms open.

"Violet! It's good to see you dear," he exclaimed as he got closer, giving me a tight hug. We chattered for about a minute before I remembered Maddie, who was starstruck beside me.
"Louis, this is my good friend. Maddie, this is Louis," I said as the two said hi, Maddie's cheeks flushed red. I could tell she was excited and nervous, so I put the pressure off of her to talk to Louis again, making sure to keep her in the conversation as well.

Fifteen minutes later, we were ushered out by the same busy looking lady, saying that Louis needed to get back in his dressing room. Before we left he gave us both a tight hug and promised to see us after the show. Our tickets were for the first row, and Maddie and I were in fangirl heaven. We danced and screamed out the lyrics to every song, and Louis waved to me a few times. As I watched the five boys prance on stage, I still couldn't believe that I had actually befriended one of them. The chances of something like that happening to me were truly one in a million. I smiled to myself as the concert neared to an end, a security guard fetching us and leading us back to the backstage area.

We walked through a maze of hallways until we ended up where we had been when we had met Louis before the show, and I saw him emerge from a room, his hair tousled and damp with sweat.

"So, how'd you like it?" he asked, grinning. I barely had time to mutter anything out before we heard a shout and the whir of mechanical wheels coming our way. We all turned to see Niall leaning into a Segway gleefully. He saw us, waved, then started towards us. He made a beeline straight for us, but seemingly wasn't able to brake as he whizzed right through our little circle, slamming into a big body guard a few feet away. He stepped off of the Segway, resigned and more than a little embarrassed, and made his way back towards us.

"Now Louis. Why in the bloody hell are you talking to two beautiful ladies without warning us?" Niall asked, his gaze obviously lingering on Maddie. Louis, seeing what was happening, chuckled and elbowed Niall in his stomach, which made him curse under his breath before he left, muttering something about trying to be friendly. My attention turned to Maddie, who's cheeks were burning. Louis and I gave each other a small laugh, and I couldn't help but tease Maddie at what just happened.

Louis explained to me that the concert we had just attended was one of the last minute ones that were added to the Take Me Home tour almost randomly. This concert had finally concluded the whole tour, and the boys would now be staying in London, working on their new album. We talked about what they would be doing for the next month, and had already arranged to go out for coffee the next day before he left for Doncaster for a week to spend with his family. We had been there for about a half hour when Louis was whisked away because the crew was getting ready to celebrate the closure of the tour. He had invited us to stay but I had politely declined, knowing we would be most certainly out of place, and it was sure to be emotional for the crew that had spent all this time together. Maddie and I headed back home, and once I had kicked off my shoes and gotten into a pair of PJ's, my eyes fluttered shut, trying to process what was happening to me.
