Back For You
“What how did they manage to get through they can’t even sing” I said pointing viciously at the screen in front of me. It had been only 20 minutes since Harry left to get Laura, and me and Anne had made ourselves comfortable on the couch under a few blankets while we sat watching XFactor auditions.
“They weren’t that bad, Ry?” Anne said as she kept a concentrated gaze at the television set, watching the next act try to impress the judges.
“Anne, you’ve got to be kidding. They bashed One Direction, their harmonies were off and none of them were even remotely good looking” I pointed out.
“I know, Ry but remember when the boys were first put together? They thought a harmony was singing together at the same time.” Anne laughed.
“We were so young, it’s not our fault” Anne and I both turned to see that Harry was back, pulling out his keys and wallet from his pockets and setting them on the counter. Laura followed close behind him she was wearing a soft pink dress with shoes to match, her sunglasses were on top of her head pushing her blond hair away from her face.
“I never said it was a bad thing, you boys turned out to be pretty good” Anne said smiling at her son, “Hi darling, how are you?” Anne directed her gaze to Laura.
“Fine, thanks. I’m just so glad i’m out of that hotel” She replied in her posh english accent.
“The offer still stands, you can stay here for as long as you need instead of at a hotel” Anne said pushing the blankets off of her and on top of me.
“Thanks Anne really, but because i’m always going to and from London it would just be easier if i stay in Dad’s hotel” Laura said sitting around the counter where Harry had pulled out a seat. Dad’s hotel, I guess that means that her dad owned the only hotel Holmes Chapel had. The one me and Harry would try and sneak into during our holidays, only to get kicked out by the owners who had known us since forever. Later after XFactor Harry, got us a hotel room at that hotel and even though it was 5 years since the last time we tried to sneak in, it was the most fun both of us had. And a weekend I would never forget.
“Oh Laura, you remember Rylynn from my birthday?” Anne said looking down at me as I tried to get off the couch.
“Yeah, of course how could I forget?” Laura said smiling at me, “Happy you’re back?” Laura asked me.
“Yeah, it honestly feels like I’ve never left.” I said standing up to join the three of them around the counter. Next to Laura I looked like a child. After looking at Laura I suddenly regretted leaving the house looking the way I did.
“She only came back so she could see me” Harry said smirking at me from across the counter.
“You wish that was the reason” I said sticking my tongue out at him.
“So mum, did Ry finish the dough before you made the cookies or…” Harry asked.
“I managed to stop her before it was to late” Anne said laughing with Harry at my frowning face.
“I can’t help it, it just tastes so good” I stated in my defence.
“So what’s the plan for tonight?” Anne said looking between the three of us.
“Maybe head down to the ice cream shop in town?” Harry suggested, knowing very well I couldn’t say no to such an offer. “I’ve been dying to take Laura to try the ice cream”
“He’s been bothering me to go down there with him forever, might as well shut him up” Laura said giggling.
“You coming Ry?” Harry asked his green eyes shimmering at me.
“Maybe, but I promised I’d be home soon. My brother just got home today so I really shouldn’t ditch him all day”
“I’ll buy you ice cream?” Harry said.
“Well then you should’ve started with that” I said to a satisfied Harry, before turning my gaze to Anne, “Anne?” I said turning and wrapping my arm around Anne’s waist “Please, don’t make me third wheel with these two” I said giving Anne my puppy dog face, the one I knew she wouldn’t be able to resist.
“Fine, only because I haven’t seen you in ages Rylynn” Anne said shaking her head at me. I couldn’t help but smile at her before reverting my gaze to Harry who was smiling right back at me and Anne. “Let me just grab my purse” Anne said leaving the kitchen towards the stairs.
“So Laura, where about from England are you from?” I asked her, I had to at least try and make an effort.
“I’m from Oxford, but I attended university in Manchester” Laura replied some what coldly.
“Oh, wicked. One of my really good friends went to University in Manchester," I said in an effort to keep the conversation going.
“Want to start walking there?” Laura said after checking her watch and turning to Harry.
“I think we should wait for my mum and then we can all walk together?” Harry replied more so in question than comment.
“I’m sure Anne and Rylynn wouldn’t want us around they seem like they have a lot of catching up to do” Laura said looking at me then back at Harry.
“I know but, I haven’t seen-” Harry started to protest
“You know what, you guys carry on. We’ll meet you there” I said giving Harry a reassuring look.
“See, comm on babe.” Laura said pulling Harry’s hands towards the door.
“You sure, Ry? I mean we can wait, I don’t mind” Harry asked me genuinely concerned.
“No, Harry. It’s fine go we’ll catch up with you” I said sitting on the stool around the counter. “Go” I said urging him on.
“Okay, urmm….well seen you soon then” Harry managed to say before the door closed.
“Are you guys ready to- where did they go?” Anne said as she carried a sweater in one hand and a small bag around her shoulder.
“Laura wanted to start walking, so they left” I said trying to sound as un-sarcastic while saying her name as possible.
“Oh, well I probably shouldn’t have called Gemma and asked if she wanted to come that took a while” Anne said shuffling through her purse.
“No, Anne it’s not you’re fault at all. Where are we meeting Gemma?” I asked suddenly excited to see her.
“She’s outside, she was on her way over her to hang out with you” Anne said making her way to the front door and slipping on her boots.
“Gemma!” I screamed running to her.
“Where’s our favourite person?” Gemma asked looking over my shoulder
“The princess wanted to leave without us,” I said laughing
“She’s a handful isn’t she” Gemma said as she started down the road leading to the centre of town.
Anne, Gemma and myself enjoyed our walk into town. A walk I hadn’t taken in ages, Holmes Chapel looked the exact same as it did years ago when I had grown up here, the corner shop where me and Harry would ride our bikes to every friday was still there. The Bakery that he worked at was still the same. It was as if we had all grown up, moved away and then moved back and nothing had changed. Everything was still the same as we left it. This little town of our's was still the same little town it always was, and always will be.
“Rylynn” I heard a familiar voice call my name, looking around for the green eyed curly haired boy I spotted him sitting in our spot outside the ice cream store.
“Hey, how do you like the ice cream Laura?” I asked smiling at her.
“The best” she said returning a forced smile. “Hey Gemma, didn’t know you were coming” Laura squealed giving Gemma a sideways hug.
“Yeah, I haven’t seen Rylynn in ages” Gemma said before smirking at me, I was trying to control my laugh.
I wouldn’t say conversation flowed easy between the five of us. With the continuous “Remember when” or “Remember that time where..” conversations going around, Harry spent the majority of his time trying to explain to Laura what we were laughing uncontrollably about. After our ice cream dinner we walked back to Anne’s house, still laughing and questioning where all the time went from when we were 16 to now- 23 and ready to start our own lives.
“Coming in Rylynn?” Anne asked as she turned the key in the door.
“No, I should probably get home” I said before hugging Anne bye.
“You sure, I think we’ll pop in a movie or something” Gemma pleaded.
“No, Gem. I really shouldn’t I should go home and hang out with Talan for a bit” I said before turning towards the path that lead back to my house.
“Here, wait i’ll walk you” Harry said letting go of Laura’s hand and following after me.
“Harry I’ll be fine i’m not 15 anymore” I protested.
“I know you’re not 15, but I’m still going to walk you” he said shoving his hands deeper into his pocket.
“Make sure she get’s home okay, Harry” Anne warned.
We started down the path towards my house in silence, I could smell his cologne from where he was walking next to me. It was the same one he always wore, the smell reminded me of the days we would spend walking home from school, the days where I would hope he would hold my hand. I didn’t have that hope anymore, I couldn’t.
The rocks crushed beneath our feet as we walked past the tree house I was trying to climb up earlier today.
“My mum loves you, you know that?” Harry said breaking the silence.
“Yeah? Well I love her too, she’s taught me so much” I said in all honesty.
“She does, she loves you like you were her own daughter” Harry said, I didn’t know how to respond to that. Anne was always my mum, she was never just Anne. She was there when I needed her, for all the important moments in my life and everything in between.
“How do you like Laura?” Harry said as we approached my front door, the question completely catching me of guard.
“She’s different," I said looking up at him, my breath hitched in my throat when our eyes met, "different than any of the girls you’ve brought home before…" ,his hands still shoved deep in his pocket, and his eyes still glimmered in the light of the moon; that’s one thing that never changed.
“Yeah, I know” Harry said looking down at his feet.
“Maybe that’s why it works so well?” I wondered.
“Maybe” Harry said stopping in front of me, he looked down at me as a smirk played on his face when he saw me shivver. “Go inside, I’ll see you tomorrow dork” he said gesturing towards the door.
“Night H” the nickname I gave him years ago surprised even me as I said it.
“H, haven’t header that in a long time” Harry commented through his giggle
I smiled over my shoulder as I opened my front door “Night”
“Night Ry” I heard Harry’s husky voice say before I closed the door.
“You’re blushing red, smiling like a fool and you have goose bumps all up your arm. that only means one thing, Harry walked you home huh?” My brother Talan said as he walked down the stairs. “23 years old and we still can’t admit our feelings” He said repeating the same words he said earlier this morning.
The same word that hunted me all day today.
