Survivors

Letting the past go is hard, and letting the now take over is harder.

"Get the hell off of her," I shout in a commanding voice. Darrell's head turns towards me and his jaw drops. Ella's head turns towards me and I can see the pain and agony in it, and the tears streaming down her rosy cheeks proves it. Darrell straightens himself out and walks over to me and Renee. We both hold our ground. "I will kill her if you call any of the authorities, scream for anyone, or run. You will let me walk out the door and never tell anyone of this again," he spits out through his teeth as he draws a knife. My breath catches in my throat. I can feel my phone in my hand and I use my exceptional texting skills to text Renee and say, 'create a diversion,' while Darrell is looking at Renee. I can tell Renee got the text when she gives a small jump from the vibrate of her phone. Darrell just stares at her. He looks my way for one moment and at that moment Renee knocks the lamp on the bedside table onto Darrell's bare feet. He shouts and drops the knife and I look down to see the blood seeping out from under his feet. Renee and I make a break for Ella and Renee grabs Ella while I dial 911.

I turn around and see a bloody, knife wielding, and angry Darrell. He comes at me with the knife pointed and growls at Ella who is bawling her eyes out and screaming. Renee backs towards the window with me right in front of her. Suddenly the authorities burst through the door and seize Darrell who is slashing wildly with the knife. He is quickly led out the door. One of the policemen take a bawling Ella out of Renee's arms and then Renee passes out. She hits the floor with a thud and I start breathing heavily. Too much, way to much.

Later at the hospital, Renee in a room resting, and Ella being checked up, I sit in the waiting room. I sit there shaking. I couldn't stop. Darrell had become this monster that I didn't even know anymore. The caring, selfless, and charming young man that I had dated was gone. There wasn't even a sliver of him left. "Olivia Mason," the receptionist calls, "you were requested in room 14 by Renee Elis." I shakily stand from my chair and drag my unwilling feet down the hallway until I reach room 14. I take a deep breath and let myself into the room where I see Renee laying in a hospital bed staring at the ceiling. She is unmoving. "Renee," I ask as I cautiously step towards her. "It's your fault," she says and doesn't look at me. "What," I question as I pause for a second, not believing my ears. "It's your fault that this happened," she says as she turns towards me. I can see the pain behind her eyes and see the hatred she has for me. "No," I say as I start to back up, "no, it's not," I try as I bump into a table next to the door. "You trusted him," she shouts, "and that's why Ella isn't coming back. You left her with someone you barely knew and didn't even barely trust," she says as she starts to break down in tears. "Ella's......Ella's de-de-dead?" I finally croak out. The look in Renee's eyes confirms my worst fears. I just shake my head, wishing those words didn't just come out of her mouth. "Get out and don't ever call, text, or look for me again. She was my life after my husband died. She was everything and it's your fault that she's gone. If you hadn't trusted that asshole, she would be here. Get out you bitch," she screams at me. My eyes widen with tears as I turn and run out of the room, tears streaking down my face. She was the only person I had left. And now she was gone. As I run down the hallway, I see a hospital bed with a small body wrapped in a blanket, laying unmoving on it. Without a doubt in my mind, I know it's Ella. I freeze as I imagine her beautiful caramel curls that always bounced when she ran. imagined her smile that always seemed to brighten up a room. I remember her fragile limbs that were always attempting things. I imagine her smile when she accomplished something. I slid down the wall and curled up on the floor and cried for hours. I couldn't do anything. I had just lost the last thing I had in life.

I slowly drag myself through the door of my apartment and see the mess everywhere. There's broken glass shards, pillows are ripped, things are 20 feet from where they started, and there is dried blood next to the bed. I feel like I'm about to cry when suddenly, my phone rings. I reach into my pocket and pull it out without looking at the caller ID. "Hello," I say into it. "Hello, is this Ms. Olivia Mason?" The voice on the other end questions. "Yes," I say cautiously. "We are pleased to inform you that you received a part in the show," the person states. "My jaw drops when u hear his. It was probably only a small part, but it was amazing to get in, I really did need the money. "What part," I studded. "You will be playing the lead character, April Graves," he says calmly. I drop my phone on the couch and stand there, frozen even when I hear the person on the other end talking. Then I scream. Oh my god! I was doing a show and I was the lead character! This couldn't be happening. This was the first good thing to happen to me in about a year. I stood there breathing heavily, then I hit the floor with a thud, I had just passed out.

Guy calling POV:

"They always drop their phones"...'thud,' and sometimes they pass out. Typical.
