The Girl Who Waited

Chapter Four

Esme's POV

The woods were a convenient hide-away ever since I was a little kid. Deer and other animals roamed the land, but I didn't mind. Not too far away was a river that was four feet deep. In the summer it was the perfect wading spot, but when snow came in the winter it froze and was a slippery spot destined for danger.

I picked up the hem of my dress and walked into the cool, clear water. The water traveled over the barrier of rocks and moved down stream with ease.

"Why are you here?" A cold voice asked. "This is my territory."

I jumped which caused me to slip and fall into the water. "That's none of your business" I snapped.

"Sorry," he said. Although it was pretty obvious he wasn't sorry. "I was just asking."

I had to bit my tongue and pretend I never heard him. "No, I shouldn't have snapped at you. I was just upset that you startled me." I admitted. "To answer your question I live near these woods."

He shrugged. "Esme, right?" I nodded. "I'm Harry by the way."

"I know who you are." I stood up and wrung out my dress. "Daisy told me about you and your silly friends." I walked over to a log and sat down not too long before Harry plopped down by my side.

"Well, we could be more than friends if you would like." Harry said seductively. His hand moved up my leg, underneath my dress.

I screamed. "Don't you dare touch me!"

Harry looked appalled. "Look, I wasn't-"

"I don't want to hear it!" I yelled at him. "You're a creep! That's what you are! Don't waste your time- I'm not like most girls. Stay away from me because I'm not going to fall into your trap!"

From there I ran as fast as I could from him. It felt like ages before I stopped, but when I did Harry was right next to me staring daggers at me. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done what I did back there- it as uncalled for."

"I'll say!"

"Forgive me?" He gave me pleading eyes which I couldn't turn down.

I knew in time I would forgive and forget, but for the moment I wasn't backing down. Although my mouth had other plans. "Just this once."

"Just this once," Harry repeated blankly and I started to walk away. "Wait- I want to apologise for how I've been acting lately at school. I know that's why you haven't taken a liking to me."

I stopped in my tracks and looked at him in disbelief. "Now you apologise?" I asked in a deadly quite manner. "After I've seen you watching me in class, in the halls and when I walk home from school for the past month?"

"That's why I'm apologising!"

"After watching me change in the girls locker room after swim practice?! I'm not an idiot!" I yelled, loosing my temper. "Don't think I haven't noticed because I have! You're scaring me, Harry, you really are!"

I was in tears, frightened at the thought of everything he had ever seen of me. "Please, don't cry." Harry pleaded. "I don't want to add that to the list of things I've done today."

"Too, bad," I stated simply. "You have."

"Don't go."

"Why not?" I asked stubbornly.

"Because," he bit his lip. "Because I like you- a lot."

He pulled my face closer to his and kissed me full on the mouth. His grip around my head was hard, but his lips on top of mine were soft. The mixture of the two was contrary. As much as Harry scared me I didn't pull away. It was if I was in some sort of trance. This trance, for whatever reason, made me say, "I really like you, too."

And that was the worst mistake I had ever made. The one I would regret most in the end.
