The Girl Who Waited

Chapter Five

Kirsten's POV

John rubbed his hand against the back of his neck apprehensively. "-erm- Kirsten?"

"Yes?"

"I was wondering if," he swallowed nervously. "If you would like to come with me to a party on Halloween."

Oh. "Why didn't you ask one of your friends in your grade? Surely you would prefer one of them over myself."

"They're busy."

"They're busy." I repeated, obviously unconvinced.

"Well, I don't think any of them would like to come as a date with me." He stuttered.

I grimaced, although I was only joking. "And you thought I would?" John had a hurt look on his face and I immediately felt bad. "I was just messing around, John, of course I'll go with you."

John frowned at me. "That wasn't funny."

"Oh, come off it!"

I had never been to a party on the night of Halloween before, but it sounded like quite the experience. My costume consisted of an extravagant gown and a matching mask. I was from a masquerade ball.

"You look beautiful," John said, marveling at the sight of me.

I blushed deeply. "Thank you."

When we arrived music was blaring through speakers and people we all over the house. Some were grinding others making out in corners. Disgusting.

"I'll go get us something to drink." John yelled over the music.

I nodded. While I was waiting I noticed a jester wearing a blank, silver mask watching me so I decided to walk upstairs so I could explore the house. When I opened one of the doors I was shocked to find Daisy making out with a senior.

"Daisy Marie!" I yelled. "You should be ashamed of yourself!"

She glanced at me then leaned down kissed the boy deeply. "Okay," Daisy said pushing the boy away from her and flatting her top." I'll be seeing you later," she giggled.

"What the hell was that, Daisy?!"

"Nothing." She said, shrugging. "It was nothing really."

"But-"

"Oh, shut up and have a drink." She said shoving a cup in my direction. I reluctantly took a sip and gasped. "Besides I know you came with my brother and have intentions to-"

My eyes widened in horror when I realised what she was saying. "No, I don't!"

"Yes, you do!" Daisy screamed. "He likes you- I know it! And I read your diary so don't you dare tell me you don't like him."

"That was when I was twelve years old, Daisy! You can't be seriously thinking I still like him!"

"Whatever," she said rolling her eyes. "But mark my words by midnight tonight-"

"Shut up," I growled.

Daisy looked at me, her eyes full of humor. "Never!" She chirped.

I couldn't be sure, but in the window behind Daisy I thought I saw another blank, silver mask.

"Sorry," I said, taking the drink from John's hand. "I ran into your sister upstairs. She was -erm- busy."

He shrugged, swaying slightly. "Doesn't it matter? I mean you know she's going to fuck whoever she likes, Kirsten, there's nothing you can do about it."

I flinched at his language. That wasn't my John. He was drunk.

He took my mask off. "You really are beautiful tonight."

"John, stop it." I commanded. "Before you do something you'll regret."

His teeth grazed my cheek bone. "There's nothing I could ever regret when it comes to you, Kirsten. I love you."

He pressed his lips to mine harshly. I pushed him away as hard as I could. This wasn't how I wanted to be with him- or with anyone for that matter. It was uncomfortable.

"John, I'm going home." I said firmly.

"Babe," he slurred. "Don't go."

"Don't call me that."

He suppressed a smile. "Babe."

I swung my fist at him and left him doubled over in pain, drunk. See? I can defend myself. Only it's a shame it had to be from you, I thought bitterly.
The same jester with the blank face popped out at me more than once on my walk home. I told myself it was just the alcohol and that I was having hallucinations.

After quite some time I decided to prove my theory correct so when I saw the jester I walked over to it and let my fingers graze over the 'knife' it held. Beads of blood started to appear and I froze in terror. Mustering up all of my courage I pressed one finger against the mask hoping I wouldn't feel anything. Only my finger made contact with something hard.

The jester tilted its head and whispered in a raspy voice, "we've been watching you."

I screamed and fainted, my head smashing against the pavement.
