The Girl Who Waited

Chapter Two

Kirsten's POV

Teachers stood outside the school gates greeting students, asking how their summer vacation was- as if they cared. It was the start of a new school year and so far was exactly the same as my junior year.

"Get out of my way!" A senior yelled, pushing me to the floor.

A pair of sturdy arms caught me mid-fall. "What was that for? She didn't do anything wrong!" I turned around and saw Daisy's older brother, John, glaring at the boy.

"John," I mumbled. "It's okay. I can take care of myself. You know I don't mess around with boys."

John looked over his shoulder where Daisy stood flirting with a group of freshmens. "Well, you're better off than my sister in that regard, but you can't defend your self mentally or physically." I opened my mouth to argue, but John put a finger to my lips and said, "don't you dare disagree with me because you know it's true."

I looked at the floor defeated, determined to change the subject. "So how's your dad been since your mom left?"

"He's been," John started hesitantly. "Good." It came out more as a question rather than a statement so I crossed my arms and gave him sad, longing eyes. "Oh, alright! Please stop- you're making me feel bad."

I laughed. "Isn't that the point?" He glared at me.

"Anyways, he still in shock. Who can blame him? None of us expected her to-" He paused, his mouth open, looking behind me.

"What is it?" I asked in a strained voice, not really wanting to know.

His eyes grew dark. "I don't like how they're looking at you."

I groaned. Not this again! "They're just your typical high school boys! There's nothing absurd-"

"No," he said darkly. "It's not that. They're looking a you like you're a meal." The bell rang and John put his arm around my shoulders protectively. "Come on, lets go to class before we're late."

The day went faster than anticipated. Before I knew it the bell had rang for lunch. "Excuse me." I said, squeezing in-between a couple holding hands in the hall. "Pardon me."

"What?" A girl asked bluntly, stepping to the side of me.

"Coming through!" I yelled over the crowd. It was no longer a priority of mine to be polite.

"Geez," Esme said racing to catch up with me. "What's the big hurry for?"

"Someone's in a mood. " Daisy teased.

"No, I'm not!" I protested stamping my foot in frustration.

"Oh, please." Daisy said rolling her eyes. "What boy is it?"

"What?"

"She wants to know who you like." Esme said quietly.

"Nobody!"

"But-"

A nearby teacher stepped in between Esme and myself. "Is there a problem here?"

"No." Esme said. Her voice was suddenly high pitched.

The teacher ignored her. "Liam!" He yelled across the hall.

A tall boy with light brown hair and hazel eyes' head popped out of the crowd. "Yes, sir?"

"Please clean up this mishaps."

"Very well, sir." Liam said formally. The teacher left and Liam turned to us, his eyes narrowed. "So who was the instigator here?"

All eyes fell on Daisy, who looked at the floor guilty. "I was just messing around."

"Messing around?" Liam snorted. "Do you know what I do with people that mess around?" Daisy shook her head. "I shape them into better people." He pulled out a yellow piece of paper and started scribbling on it with a pen. "I'll be seeing you at detention after school at four."

"But you can't give me detention! Only a teacher-"

Liam held up his hand and Daisy fell silent. "I can make it two days if you would like."

"No, one day would be perfectly fine. Thank you." Daisy said sourly, snatching the paper out of his hand.

Liam walked away leaving Daisy muttering in anger. "Who does he think he is giving me detention?!" She crumpled up the paper and threw it into her backpack.

So much for after school plans, but then again that wasn't my fault...
