The Girl Who Waited

Chapter One

Esme's POV

"Again!" Daisy screamed at the top of her lungs.

"Oh, hurry up!" Kirsten squealed as we ran up the stairs once more to re-enter the ride.

This was the first time we had ever been to the water park without adult supervision- and we liked it. Not that my parents were over protective or anything like that. Above us a group of four to five boys put a quarter into a machine to activate a nearby spray gun. My eyes widened in fear.

"Duck!" I yelled, covering my face with my hands. The water came out in gushes and we were shot at until our cover-ups were soaked to the bone. Kirsten screamed as though she were in pain, but really only her shorts got wet.

When I glanced behind us at the group of boys they were laughing, others taunting us. However, the most obnoxious one of them all had tears in his eyes and was banging his fist against the ground. His face had turned a bright red and tears were formed in his eyes from the extensive amount of laughter.

"Very funny. You would think they would have a little more integrity than that." I scoffed.

"Look," Kirsten sighed. "Esme, not everyone is as mature as you are."

Daisy laughed. "Mature?" She cocked an eyebrow. "I think not- just critical."

"Okay," Kirsten admitted shyly. "You've got a point."

A water ballon exploded at Daisy's feet and she let out a piercing scream. "What was that for?!" She yelled shaking her fist at the boys.

"You're hot!" The boy responsible for the water balloon yelled, his eyes full of humour.

"Oh, please." Daisy rolled her eyes. "As if you don't say that to every girl."

"No," the boy to his left said shaking his head. "Not to every girl."

"Be careful," Kirsten warned. "She grew up with two older brothers so she knows how to fight."

"Is that so?" One of them asked, their eyes narrowing at Daisy.

"Well," I said nervously. "It's been nice meeting you, but I think we better best be going."

"Don't you want to stay for a while?" One of them asked putting their arm around my shoulders.

"You know?" Daisy said turning to Kirsten and myself. "That doesn't sound like such a bad idea."

Never did we expect to hear from them ever again so we joked and flirted throughout the park. It was stupid, I admit it, but we were foolish teenagers and thought nothing could stand in our way. When we arrived home we were shocked to find that they lived in the same town as us. At first it was exciting being with them. Although after time our excitement turned to fear.

It took us a month to figure out that we were being followed places and watched during the night. We confronted them, threatening to tell the police, but they just looked at us, smiled and said, "what? I think you're mistaken." We believed them and let our guard down. One of us was attacked, another given an overdose on a prescribed medical drug, but the last girl was brutally murdered.

That was three years ago when we're naive fifteen year old, thinking they couldn't hurt us, but they did. Let me tell you my story...
