The Last Goodbye

He looked at me once and that was it. I handed him my copy of his book to sign and nothing. Coming here today I didn't fully know what was going to happen. But I did think something was. Niall grabbed another pen and opened the book. He began to sign his name then he stopped.

"And who am I signing this too?" Niall asked.

"Victoria, Victoria Chambers." I swallowed. He continued to sign the inside of the book's jacket like those two words didn't faze him. All I kept thinking was this was a complete waste of time. I was beginning to run out of options and this guy was my last hope. Slamming the book close he reluctantly handed it to me and for the first time I think he saw me.

Niall's POV

I stood in the center of Zayn and Harry. The tension between the two of them was crazy and just by me saying another word would've probably made it worst. Zayn spoke the last word and walked away. Leaving it now to just be Victoria, Harry and myself in a triangle.

"Let's go we're leaving." Harry said harshly to Victoria. Harry reached out to grab her hand, but Victoria urged backwards. "Not to you go talk him." Victoria told him.

Harry flashed a joyless grin. "I have absolutely nothing to say to him." He spat. I wrapped my arm around Victoria's shoulder knowing Harry would disagree with such contact. But me being me I did it anyway.

"Come on man you two don't have to like each other, but the two of you need to figure how to be civil in the same room again." I said to Harry not fully understanding it. My words were slurring and the bright lighting was hurting my head even more. I shifted my weight a little more on my left leg and I almost fell over Victoria.

"Okay come on you need to get some fresh air." Victoria said to me trying her best to hold me up. She tightened her grip around my back. I nervously looked up at Harry who was undoubtedly watching me carefully. I never really understood why Harry made being around Victoria feel so forbidden. I'd have to admit though I did like this intimidating feeling.

She helped guide me out the front door and once we were a distance from people we sat down. Victoria sat down beside me facing my side. Her knee pressed into my leg, but I didn't mind it. "Thanks for hauling my ass out of there Chambers." I said. She waved her hand like she was fanning something away.

"It's no big deal beside you'd do this same for me." Victoria said. "I wouldn't have too you're more put together than I am." I told her.

"I haven't been for a while Niall. Wait, that rhymed!" Her light laughter made me miss her all over again. It made me remember how we once where. I swiveled slightly to see her. We smiled at each other I don't know for how long, a while.

"Can we talk?" Like talking was what I wanted.

"Sure what is you want to talk about?" Victoria asked me. "We can talk about a how unusually calm you're acting." I said to her. She sighed and pulled her knees up close to her, then wrapped her arms around them. Though the sun had set I still felt a ray of light beside me. Even if she didn't know it. People walked down and passed us. They waved, we waved back.

"Niall I just noticed something." Victoria said interrupting my train of thought. The sound in her voiced became lighter and her mood had changed. "I don't think the moon shows here in New York." She says casually. I looked at her and laughed so hard the sound of my own voice hurt my ears.

"I may have had a few drinks tonight, but you sure you're not smoking something?" She shoved my arm.

"No I'm serious!"

"I am too." I nodded my head, she paused then resumed again.

"The nights I've been here I've seen the starriest nights, yet no moon."

"I haven't noticed." I said to her. "So Chambers you never answered my question." I pushed myself off the ground hoisting myself to my feet. Victoria did the same. "I thought if I pretended long enough that I will soon believe it." She said to me.

"And do you?" She stared into my eyes, maybe even looking for the answer she needed, and I wish I had it. Victoria had always been my friend and the way we met is one hell of a story I'll never forget. My drunken my mind thought all the things I wanted to say. I felt content with the promise I made myself a long time ago. She grabbed my arm and pulled me in for a hug.
"As long as you stay my friend I will be."

The tighter I held on to her it seemed like my vision got blurrier. I began to feel light headed, at any given moment there was a good chance I was going to fall backwards. All I kept thinking was to not let her go. "Harry?" She breathed.

My stomach twisted, because she still thought of him. I get their this wonder couple , but we went almost a good ten minutes without mentioning him.

"Harry!"

This time she yelled out over my shoulder. Victoria let me go and took off running towards disgruntled Zayn and a fuming Harry. The sight of them made me think about what happened not to long ago. Zayn swore he never knew Victoria was still in the building when him and Mikey set off the firecrackers . They way he acts whenever someone mentions it makes me think otherwise. No wonder Harry hates to be around fireworks now.

I watched her try and run to Harry like she always does. I should've went after her, I should have held on to her a little longer. Then maybe that wouldn't have been the last day that I remember. I tried to call after her, but even I didn't hear the sound of my voice. My head felt cloudy and dust filled my mouth. I fell on my back and saw the cluster of stars in the sky.

And she was right there wasn't a moon in sight.
