Through The Dark

apologies

I ran outside to the suburban, thankful that I had left the doors unlocked. I slid inside and quickly shut the door, leaving me in the peace and quiet of the car as the rain pitter pattered on the metal. The vehicle started up and backed out as I buckled up, not knowing where I was even going to as I switched the gears into drive and headed off.

I had been driving for about thirty minutes when my surroundings started to look oddly familiar. I was on the other side of town and the rain was pouring down, making it hard to see. I slowed down and looked closely for something. What was I looking for? I have no idea.

A familiar house came into view, making me pull over and stop across the street from it. A little silver car was in the driveway, telling me the person that lived here was indeed home. I took a deep shaky breath before turning off the car and jumping out. I slam the door and run across the road, cussing as I sloshed through a puddle. I ran across the lawn, in a hurry to get out of the rain.

I stood on the front porch a few seconds later, panting from my short run. I’m definitely going to start working out again. I look at the door, remembering the last time I was here. I was leaving to go to the very place I just came from. The last time I was here was almost two years ago.

I raised my hand, fully prepared to knock on the door but something stopped me. What would happen? How would she react? I dropped my hand and stepped away from the door, turning around. I made it to the steps when I heard the door swing open, making me stop in my tracks.

“Hello?” A female voice called out, followed by a cough. I slowly turned around, facing the woman.

“Nichole?” She asked, her eyes widening. I stepped back up onto the porch and into the porch light, meeting the blue eyes I haven’t seen in forever.

“Oh, Nichole.” She gushed, rushing forward. Her arms wrapped around my neck, holding close as she began to cry. I hesitantly wrapped my arms around her waist, hugging her back.

“I’m so sorry, honey. I never should have said any of those things to you. I was wrong.” The women sobbed, her body shaking in my arms.

“It’s okay, mum.” I mutter, letting her cry it out. She pulled back, looking at my face.

“You’re wet, let’s get you inside and warmed up. We can talk then. I think you still have clothes in your room, I didn’t touch anything.” My mother said, basically pushing me inside.

**************************

“How is the baby?” She asked once I was in dry clothes and sipping on a cup of coffee.

“Um, I had twins actually. Darcy and Dylan.” I say shyly, waiting for her act to drop and the mom that I last talked to to come out.

“Oh, how lovely! Boy and girl or both the same sex?” She asked, leaning forward in her chair as she smiled at me. I smiled shyly back, sipping more out of my cup.

“One of each. Darcy and Dylan. Their birthday will be around here soon. In about two week actually.” I say, pulling out my phone that had managed to not get wet. I clicked a few buttons and my pictures came up. I held out my phone to the woman, watching her take it and flip through the pictures.

“You got a new phone?” She asked, looking up at me. I nodded my head at her.

“That would explain why I couldn’t call you. And every time I came by they said you wasn’t there.” My mum said, catching me by surprise.

“You tried to contact me?” I asked, shifting in my seat.

“Of course I did! I’m your mother. As soon as I cooled off and thought about it, I tried to call you but it said the number didn’t exist anymore. And when I got home and went to see you, a blonde boy said you wasn’t home. I did that many times and received the same answer from different boys. I figured you told them to say that and didn’t want to see me so I gave up. I’m truly sorry for saying those things. I didn’t mean it sweetheart, I swear. I’m so sorry.” She said, her eyes filling up as she apologized for the hundredth times. We’ve already had our crying and forgiving session earlier.

“I know, mum, I know. I forgive you. And, no I didn’t tell them to say that. I didn’t even know you was stopping by. And during my second month of pregnancy I dropped my phone into a puddle coming back from one of my doctors appointments. Liam got me a new one the very same day.” I say, pointing to the phone she held in her hand.

“Liam.. Is he the father?” She asked, shaking the phone at me a little bit as she went back to scrolling through the pictures again. I hesitated.

“There was a point in time where I wished he was but no, Liam is not the dad.” I say, sighing as I thought of Harry.

“Is it this one?” She asked, holding my phone up to reveal a curly headed boy grinning at the camera as he held Darcy shortly after she had been born.

“Yeah, that’s Harry.” I replied, smiling at the picture.

“Ah, he’s a cutie. They all are, actually. The babies are beautiful, Nichole. Darcy looks just like you.” She gushed, grinning at the phone.

“I think she has your eyes, actually. Mine are brown and Harry’s are green, along with Dylan’s. Darcy has bright blue eyes.” I say, smiling at the woman as she grinned.

“I bet they are dolls.” She says softly, looking at the pictures.

“Maybe you can come to their birthday party. I think it would be good for them to meet the rest of their family.” I say hesitantly, looking up at her. Her grinned widened and she nodded her head.

“I would love that.” She says, handing me my phone back. I exit out of the pictures and set it down on the coffee table in front of me.

“Mom, I’m having another baby. I’m almost three months.” I admit quickly, not looking up. It was quiet for a minute before she spoke.

“Oh, honey that’s wonderful! Does Harry know?” She asked, surprising me.

“Um, no. I just found out today.” I say, looking up to met truly excited eyes.

“Aw, it’ll be okay. You’ll be fine.” She said, spotting the tears that I was trying to blink away.

“I know, mum. I know.” I say, smiling at her as she took my hand and gave it a light squeeze.

We talked for another two hours before I decided I needed to get home. I missed my babies and I needed to apologize to Gemma and Ashley. I was in the clothes I had came in, my mum had dried them for me. I hugged her tightly before walking outside, seeing that it was starting to get dark.

“I’ll see you soon, mum. I love you.” I say, hugging her again.

“I love you, too, Nichole. Drive safe, sweetheart.” She replies, smiling sweetly at me. I nod my head and descend the front stairs.

As I drove home, I thought over everything me and my mum had talked about. She had tried to contact me. She didn’t hate me after all, she actually missed me. I told her about Liam and Harry then I told her about the band. She was delighted with that. I’m pretty sure she fell in love with Harry when I told her everything, but then again, who wouldn’t? The boy was charming and adorable. I smiled as I pulled into the driveway, glad that my mum actually loved me still.
