Through The Dark

Doctor, Doctor

I shot up from the bed, darting to the bathroom just in time to squat by the toilet and empty my stomach. I jumped when someone pulled my hair back over my shoulders, gently balling it up and keeping it out of my face as I threw up last nights meal. Once I was done, I sat on the cool tile taking the wet rag that was offered to me. I rubbed it over my forehead and cheeks before wiping my mouth, groaning a little.

“Ugh, I hate throwing up.” I mutter, looking up at the person next to me. Ashley nodded her head and sat down next to me, rubbing my back gently.

“Was it something you ate? We just bought all the new food last night and you know how I am with that.” Ash said, siting indian style face me. I like taking Ashley grocery shopping with me. She check the expiration dates and helps me pick healthy but tasty foods.

“I don’t know. Maybe I’m coming down with something.” I say, sighing hard before getting up off the floor, followed by the dark headed girl.

“Go to the doctor. Call and make an appointment, I’ll watch the kids that day.” She said as I walked out of the bathroom and crawling back onto my bed. I snuggled into a big pillow on Harry’s side of the bed, curling up around it. I miss him so much.

“Okay. If you can find me my phone, I’ll call right now.” I say, watching Ashley walk around the bed to my side and pulling out the drawer that I always kept my phone in if it wasn’t on me. She held it up before tossing it at me. It made a light thud against the thick comforter as it landed beside me.

“Make the call then come tell me what was said. I’m going to go make breakfast, the twins will be up soon screaming for food.” Ashley said, giving me a small smile before disappearing through my bedroom door. I sighed and dialed the number.

**********************************

“It’s Wednesday at one. Mm, something smells good.” I say as I walk into the kitchen. Ashley was at the stove, taking the bacon out of the pan she had it in before placing more in it. Eggs were already cook and she was now pulling biscuits out of the oven.

“Thanks. It will be ready in a minute. I’m off wednesday so that’ll be perfect. How long have you been getting sick?” She asked, turning everything off as she put the last cooked pieces of bacon with the rest.

“The past three days. I might have some stomach virus or something.” I say, grabbing a cool piece of bacon and munching on it. She nodded her head, her face blank as she thought. I know that look.

“What? What do you think about it?” I ask her, grabbing two sippy cups and two glasses out of a cabinet.

“Have you had you period lately?” Ashley asked, avoiding my eyes as she got the milk and apple juice out of the fridge.

“Yeah, I have. They’ve been extremely light but I’ve had ‘em.” I confess, frowning. She nodded her head and started to spread butter over the top of the biscuits.

“I was just wondering. I was just thinking, ya know, it’s been a couple of months since Harry was last here and your getting sick..” Ashley trailed off. Everything clicked and I giggled.

“Ash, I’m not pregnant.” I say, opening the sippy cups. I poured Darcy milk and Dylan apple juice, smiling to myself. He got his love for apple juice from his dad.

“Well, I was just throwing that out there. I mean, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to have another cute little angel running around here.” Ashley said grinning at me. I laughed and shook my head at her, filling the two big glasses with milk before putting it all up.

“I would like to go get the two little angels I already have. Care to join me?” I ask, walking around the counter. Her little foot steps behind me told me she was coming along.

The twins were just waking up when we walked in, having already sat themselves up in their cribs. I went for Darcy, picking the little girl up and kissing the tip of her nose. Ashely got Dylan and we headed to the kitchen, placing them in their high chairs before giving them a little bit of scrambled eggs and their sippy cups.

“Do you know what you are going to do for their birthday?” Ashley asked, handing me a plate. It’s been almost three months since the last time Harry and the boys were home and the twins birthday was coming up.

“I’m thinking about taking them to the park but I don’t know what the weather will be like. If not, we can just have it here, out in the back yard. That way, if it starts to rain or something we can just move it all inside.” I say, taking a bite out of my bacon as I watched Darcy grab a handful of eggs and make a mess as she tried to put them all in her mouth, getting very few in there.

“Sounds like a plan. They can play on the little slide and everything Harry had gotten them for christmas. Have you though about themes?” She questioned, having me shake my head.

“I have no idea. I was thinking doing something alongthe lines of a zoo because they both love animals. Darcy adores little monkeys. Dylan is more of a penguin kinda baby.” I say, taking a sip of milk.

“That sounds like it will be cute. Let’s go with that.”Ashley agrees, stuffing a biscuit into her mouth. I shake my head and smile. I love my family.

***************************************************************

“Alright, Ash, I’m gone.” I yell as I walk through the house.

“Okay, I can’t wait to find out!” She yells back, making em shake my head. She thinks that I’m pregnant again, and to be honest, I’m not sure if I’m not. But, I refuse to believe I am until it’s confirmed by a doctor.

The ride was a bit longer than I remembered but I got to the familiar building, sighing as I parked near the door. I got out and jogged inside, a light rain starting to spill from the clouds above. I sighed in and took a seat, prepared to wait thirty minutes when my name was called only seconds later. Hm, not bad.

“Well, hello Ms. Mercer. How are the twins?” Dr. Jackson asked, smiling at me. I grinned at him.

“They are fabulous actually. Their pediatrician loves them.” I say, my feet automatically swinging as I sat on the tall medical bed thingy. I never know what to call these things.

“That’s good. How’s Harry?” He asked, smiling at me. I grinned back at him, holding up my left hand to show him the ring.

“He’s fine, on tour right now though.” I reply.

“Oh, that’s good and congratulations on the engagement. He has great taste in jewelry, too.” He says, grinning at me.

“Thank you.” I say, looking down at the ring that decorated my ring finger.

“You’re welcome. Now Nichole, how are you feeling?” He asked, looking at his clipboard.

“Fine, right now. Better than fine actually.” I say, frowning a little. Maybe I’m over reacting to getting sick.

“Why are you here if you feel fine?” He asked casually, catching my attention with something in his voice as he looked over the papers.

“Well, for the past three morning I’ve been getting sick, but anytime after that, I’m fine.” I admit, feeling my jaws begin to tingle. I swallow hard, getting a little nervous as my stomach started to turn.

“Have you gotten any fevers of your throat sore?” He asked, writing something down.

“No, my throat’s only sore after I.. After I.. I’m gonna throw up.” I stutter, jumping down from the bed and running out of the room to the bathroom down the hall. I barely make it before my stomach jerked and then proceeded to empty itself. Good thing I wore my hair in a pony tail today.

When I was finished, I rinsed my mouth out before splashing my face with cold water, glad I decided to not wear any makeup today. I dried my face and flushed the toilet, taking a shaky breath. Now my throat hurt. I opened the door and stepped out, surprised to see doc waiting outside for me.

“I would like to go out on a limb and have an ultrasound done today, if that’s okay with you.” He admitted.

I hesitantly nodded, following him through the halls. We came to a familiar room. I took a deep breath and got onto the bed, pulling up my shirt. He carried out the next steps before smoothing the jell over my stomach, a fuzzy picture starting to appear. I stared wide eyed at the screen, searching.

“I don’t think I’m pregnant. I’ve had my periods and everything.” I stutter, looking up at the doctor.

“But they’ve been very light, haven’t they?” He asked as if he read my mind. I nodded my head and he shrugged.

“Sometimes that happens. They will be light until you get about midway through the pregnancy, then you won’t have them at all. And, by the looks of it, you’re almost three months.” The doctor said, looking up at the screen.

“W-what?” I asked, my heart thumping hard in my chest.

“Congratulations, Ms. Mercer. You’re gonna be a mommy of three.” He said, pointing to the middle of a screen.
