The new start
Chapter twenty-three, "The money trick"
When Summer stopped the car outside McDonalds the feeling that this wasn´t right hit me again. I can´t sit here with Summer and pretend that everything is fine, I need proof that she really have changed.
"Summer can I ask you a question?" I said and stepped out of the car.
"Nothing is stopping you, right?" I sighed, I had forgotten Summer´s bitchy attitude sometimes. I took a deep breath and prepared me for the worst.
"Why did you follow me here, seriously?" I held my breath, was she going to get angry now?
"I told you, I missed you. Don´t worry about that." She said, but I felt how she was avoiding my eyes. I wanted to ask her more, but I felt like that wasn´t the best thing to do if I wanted the nice Summer to stay and not be replaced by the angry one. There was not so many people at McDonalds. Just a old man and two girls. I wonder what time it is? I searched for my phone in my pocket but I must have forgotten it in Summer´s car. Damn it! Then I realized, I don´t have any money.
"Summer, I´m sorry but I don´t have any money." I said and started walking towards the exit when she grabbed my arm.
"I´ll pay, it´s the least I can do." She smiled. I was a bit surprised, Summer never payed. Maybe she had changed for real?
"What do you want?" The cashier asked.
"Two big macs, two milkshakes, one strawberry and one vanilla and two Mcflurry, one with daim and one with non stop." Summer said. It was so nice to be with someone who knows you so well she doesn´t even need to ask you what you want.
"Anything else?" Summer looked up at me and I shook my head.
"Go and get us a table." Summer said and I walked away to get us one in the corner. A few meters after me Summer came.
"How much do I owe you?" I asked when we both sat down.
"Nothing, it´s on me." She said and had this weird smile, the smile I knew to well. Had she stolen the food? No, she can´t. The cashier looked totally normal. But I needed to ask.
"Can I see the receipt?" Summer gave me a angry look.
"I did not steel this." She said.
"No, I know. It´s just I want to give you money." Nice save there Amy, the voice in my head was back and I could not help but smile, because even I have to admit that was a good save.
"Oh, I´m sorry and like I said before it´s on me. Now enjoy." When I was just about to take a big bite on my burger I saw the watch that was placed over the table where the old man sat. It showed 5:00 AM. I dropped my burger and looked up at Summer with terrified eyes.
"I need to get back, mum will freak out." I said.
"Calm down, let´s enjoy this first, okay?" By the look of Summer´s face that wasn´t a question more like an order. So I nodded and started to eat my burger. The burger tasted delicious lika always.
"You never get sick of McDonalds." She said and I smiled. I felt like someone was watching us and when I looked up I saw that the cashier was walking straight towards us.
"Amy, run!" Summer screamed and then I realized what Summer had done, so I grabbed my coat and ran as fast as I could out with Summer in my heels. When we had gotten into the car and were a long way away from McDonalds I finally broke the silence.
"I thought you had money. Stop doing that trick with the fake ones." I was mad, really mad I thought she had changed but she was just the same as before. Girls like Summer never changed.
"Honey, it wasn´t that bad. You´re overreacting."
"Oh, you think this is funny? This is why I left. We lost control and it ended up with someone dead." I screamed.
"Keep your voice down and it was just a little trick. I promise it won´t happen again. By the way remember the tape?" How could I ever think she had changed?
"Yeah and I will keep the deal just for that, but from now and on our friendship is fake." I said and my voice was harsh. Suddenly Summer stopped the car and when I looked into her eyes I could see tears.
"I´m so sorry but I promise you I have changed and it will never happen again. I miss you, your my best friend, please forgive me?" Was she lying? I had no idea. But I don´t think so. I had never seen Summer cry. Maybe I was a little bit too harsh to her? It was just a trick.
"I´m sorry it´s just a lot going on. Do you promise it won´t happen again?" I asked and she nodded.
"Then I believe you. Now drive me to my apartment and we´ll meet up some other time. I´ll call you." I said and the car started again. Is Summer really serious? Was the only thing going on in my head. It was like the question was on replay until the car stopped and Summer broke the silence.
"Bye, call me." She said and gave me a kiss on my cheek.
"Right about that, have you seen my phone?" I asked. Summer looked around and after a while she picked it up from the floor and handed it over to me.
"Weird that I didn´t see that before, bye" I said and I was almost 100 % sure that I had looked on the floor. It was really strange that I hadn´t seen it before. When I waited for the elevator I wondered if mum and dad had realized that I was gone yet or if they thought I fell a sleep or something. I opened the door as carefully as possible but that didn´t matter because when I got in I was greeted by two angry faces.
