To Fall So Deep

Controversy

By the next morning at school, the news of Nina's father running against Harry's dad had spread like wildfire. Her peers whispered, or stopped talking the moment she passed by. When her dad decided to run for Mayor, she didn't think about how the election would affect her at school. Nina had a great first day, and now it was looking like the second day wasn't going to be as easy.

Hands grasped Nina's arms from behind, and was pulled into a bathroom. The first thing that popped into her mind was her head in the toilet, or receiving a black eye from someone who didn't agree with her dad running. But when the bathroom door shut and she was released from the tight clench, she realized it was just Leina and Elissia standing before her.

"Your dad is running against Harry's?" Leina and Elissia said in unison.

"Yea. I kind of told him to," Nina stated. Their eyes widened.

"What? Why?" Leina asked.

"My dad doesn't agree with the ideas that Harry's dad believes in," Nina informed, "you know his dad was the reason behind the Academic Incursive Act, right?"

"Wait, what? Seriously? I thought it was Headmaster Talbot's idea," Elissia was just as surprised as Nina was when she found out the truth.

"Desmond Styles wants to go back to the basics. Books, exams, stress… He didn't like how a lot of the teachers like Corrine, I mean Professor Dela Vera, and Professor Goodwin taught in different ways. So he decided to change things. He was easily able to make your favorite professors turn into academy robots, so there's no doubt he'll do the same if he becomes Mayor," Nina explained.

"Whoa, that's some mad horse shit," Leina breathed. "Well, personally, I would rather have your dad be Mayor any day. And so would a lot of people here, but Nina, you have to know that Harry's dad is really powerful, and talented in the art of slander. And if you ever want a chance with Harry know that---"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Nina interrupted. She waved her hands in front of Leina, "stop right there. A chance with Harry? What makes you think I want to be with him? He's a womanizer, remember?"

"But you could be the good girl that changes him," Elissia suggested, a background of hope in her tone, "besides, I saw the way he looked at you when you almost fell down the stairs yesterday. I don't think he's ever looked at another girl like that before, and I've known Harry since we were like 5 years old."

"You guys have gone… mad!" Nina said. Leina and Elissia chuckled.

"Whoa there California! She just threw out some British slang. Looks like she's serious," Leina laughed.

The three girls forgot about their previous conversation and began to laugh uncontrollably together. That is until their fun was prematurely ended by a sudden flush of a toilet at the very end of the bathroom. They stopped laughing, and the back stall creaked opened. Out came Jezabelle Nixon, in all her sassy glory.

"Good morning girls," she smirked. The trio stood in silence.

Jezabelle went to a sink and proceeded to wash her hands, never breaking eye contact with either of the girls through the mirror. After drying her hands, she pulled out a tube of lipstick. She began to touch up the ruby red on her lips, before smacking them together. She turned on the balls of her feet, and started for the door, again never breaking eye contact. Before she opened it however, Jezabelle turned back around to face the girls.

"Good luck on the election Nina, you're father is a brave man for going agains't Desmond Styles," Jezabelle began. She had a sickening attitude to her tone that tensed up the air, "brave, but really daft. He doesn't have a chance at all of winning."

Jezabelle stepped even closer to Nina. The slight heel on her black boots gave her a little height, as she hovered over Nina like a superior, "your dad won't win, and neither will you."

"Don't be so quick to--"

"Harry's mine Nina," Jezabelle interrupted, "so don't think for one second that you can actually win his heart."

Miss queen bee gave a snarky, red-lipped smile. She turned again, her long hair whipping Nina in the face, and left the bathroom. Elissia and Leina's jaws dropped.

"What the bloody hell was that about?" Leina blurted.

"Nina, she thinks your competition," Elissia proclaimed.

"Competition? For what? Harry's heart?" Nina almost chuckled at the thought.

"Elissia's right," Leina confirmed, "Jezabelle knows that girls fawn over Harry all the time but she never says shit unless she thinks there's potential for her to lose him to some other girl."

"Really? How? I only met him yesterday, we barely said a full sentence to one another. I don't understand where she got the idea that I'm even remotely interested in Harry!" Nina said.

"Maybe she didn't get the idea from you. Maybe she got it from Harry," Leina suggested.

During homeroom, Harry paid no attention to Nina whatsoever. He didn't even look at her, and when it was time to leave, he got up and left right away. English was no different, though the class automatically had to sit with their partners for the duration of the period. Gossip about the election continued, and it seemed like everyone was already taking sides. While it was natural for people to do so, the school made it obvious as to who they were rooting for instead of keeping it to themselves.

At lunch, Leina and Elissia sat together in the courtyard. It was another sunny fall day, and they wanted to enjoy the warmth before the rainy season begins. During lunch, Harry was no where to be seen. Yes, Nina did notice because the other 4 of the wolf pack weren't too far from the trio of girls, and their weird conversations about Nandos, flower crowns, and carrots were of earshot too. It was refreshing to Nina that the boys were conversing about light hearted topics, other than the election.

"Do you know your dad's election game plan, yet?" Leina asked. She stuck a straw into a jukebox before proceeding to eat her homemade sandwich.

"No not really. My dad's a smart guy, with a lot of great ideas. I'm sure he's thinking of someways to give him an advantage," Nina nibbled on a cracker with peanut butter.

"You know what your dad's advantage is?" Elissia started, "he has an underdog complex."

"An underdog what?" Leina's eyebrow was lifted, setting her sandwich down.

"As in, he's the candidate that no one expects much from. Think about it. He lost the trial, he's not as wealthy as Desmond Styles, but he's a family man. He genuinely cares for Ashford and the people who live here. Your dad is an underdog, and I feel like other underdogs will want to see him succeed," Elissia explained.

"I like that. It makes a lot of sense. But how many underdogs are in Ashford. It seems like only diamonds and pearls run the town," Nina sat and pondered for a moment. She glanced at the wolf pack for what was probably the tenth time.

"Is he there?" Leina grinned.

"What are you talking about?" Nina quickly responded, turning her attention to Leina, who only had a smug expression on her face.

"You're curious about him, aren't you?" Elissia insinuated.

"I guess, I am a little," Nina admitted, "but what am I going to do? Invite him for some tea and crumpets, and ask him what his favorite color is?"

"Harry does like tea," Leina mentioned with a grin.

"Until the election stops, I don't think there will be much Nina-Harry time," Nina expressed.

"Why not?" Leina questioned.

"Hello, she'd be fraternizing with the enemy!" Elissia stated. Quickly, she realized what she just said and added, "oh my God, that's so hot!"

"No, I don't think so. Besides, I don't think I should be 'fraternizing' with anyone right now. I should concentrate on helping my dad gain an advantage," Nina took a swig from her bottle of water.

"Okay, that's fair," Leina said, "but first thing's first lady, you need to tell us the truth about something."

"About what," Nina got nervous.

"You drink a lot of water, you've only been eating crackers and peanut butter, and you've got some bruising on your legs. I noticed when you were changing yesterday for phys. ed. And you're just so thin. Not that thin is a bad thing, don't get me wrong Elissia is quite petite. And this is going to come out kinda, kinda, pushy. So you don't have to tell us details especially since we only just met yesterday, but I'm naturally maternal, and I just want you to be safe and--"

"Just spit it the fuck out, already," Nina interrupted Leina. She shuddered at how much she sounded like Joleen at that moment.

"Sorry," Leina apologized. "What I'm trying to ask is… do you have a problem… with eating?"

It took a few seconds for it to register in her mind, but then it hit her. Leina and Elissia thought Nina had an eating disorder. It was true, that Nina had only met them the previous day, but she seemed to click with these girls so easily. She had only known them for 24 hours, and felt more close to them than she ever felt compared to the 2 year friendship she had with Joleen.

"No," Nina sighed, "I don't have an eating disorder. But the reason why I have bruising, and that I seem to drown in my clothes, or how I seem to not eat very much is because I'm still recovering. I came to Ashford to live with my dad yes, but I did so because my mother passed."

"Oh no, I'm so sorry Nina," Elissia said. Her apology was genuine, and Nina could tell in her eyes that she felt bad.

"I didn't mean to bring up the subject, I'm sorry. You don't have to continue talking about it, I understand sweetie," Leina took Nina's hand and squeezed it.

"It's okay. I trust you girls," Nina smiled, "when my mom died I went into a state of depression, I guess, or indifference really. I felt numb for several months. I went to therapy, and I still do every other week. I was anti-social, I lost my appetite. It wasn't because I was avoiding food, I just couldn't taste it anymore. I'm slowly recovering, and as cheesy as it sounds, starting school here has helped a lot. My doctor told me to slowly introduce certain food groups into my system again. Veggies, fruits, carbs, sugar. The water helps me not feel so nauseas whenever I try eating something like bread or pasta because I haven't had such heavy food in a long time… And that's basically it. Not anorexic, just appetite loss."

"You're so brave," Elissia commended.

"I agree, you've been through so much. If you need any help with anything; someone to talk to, to drive you to the doctors, to help you pick out the perfect peanut butter, whatever it is, just call or text me okay?" Leina assured.

"Same goes for me. Just give me a holler," Elissia smiled.

"Thank you… mates," Nina giggled.

"There she goes again with that British slang," Leina laughed, followed by both Nina and Elissia. The serious subjects were dropped, and funny light-hearted topics ensued.

Commenting is the least I can do to tell you how much I love and appreciate your story, and it doesn't take too much time to do so, so I figure why not comment? But oh my gosh, I cannot believe that was the last chapter and all that's left is an epilogue. And this chapter just… I think it slightly killed me - more than you already nonliterally have that is - when you killed her off and then with Harry and everything. And freaking Jezabelle… Don't even get me started on how much I want to murder that bitch right now. The chapter is written beautifully nonetheless, and I can't wait for the epilogue. xx
