To Fall So Deep

A False Pretense

Snuggled up in a thick blanket, clicking buttons on a black XBOX controller was Niall. Instead of immersing himself into the drama that was the Styles family, he found himself drowning in a slew of video games and hot chocolate. Harry was his best friend, and would come to Niall if and when he was needed—and it seemed like Niall’s helping hand would soon be a necessity.

“Niall!” the door opened wide and Greg ran inside.

“Bro, knock!” Niall yelled. Greg ignored his comment and continued,

“I know who the mole is!”

“Mole? As in your office mole?” Niall asked, pausing the video game.

“Jezabelle Nixon,”

“I knew it!” Niall predicted, “bitch is crazy.”

“She has the same therapist as Nina and has been reading all her files. At work today, Jezabelle bursted into the office and went on some crazy rampage about Harry and Nina and how if she can’t have Harry, no one can. She just went mad—throwing things around, even punched a security guard. I think she’s been off her medication for a while,” Greg speculated.

“Holy shit,” Niall breathed. He didn’t know what else to say.

It was almost unbelievable to think that Jezabelle had some kind of problem. Of the many years he knew the girl, she exuded perfection, and never let anyone see her weak spots. For Jezabelle to crack under pressure was something Niall couldn’t even imagine.

“Jezabelle has some mental issue and it’s serious. If she really has been off her medication for even a couple days, who knows how extreme she could go,” Greg explained.

“What do you mean extreme?” Niall questioned, “you don’t think she would actually hurt Nina or Harry, do you?”

“Well I certainly don’t think we should ignore the issue,” Greg shrugged, “better safe than sorry. You may want to call Nina and Harry to give them a heads up.”

Niall nodded, pulling out his phone from his pocket.

“And Niall,” Greg began, “the Nixons are one of the only families in Ashford to own a gun.”

Niall’s eyes grew wide, understanding what that meant. He tapped the screen a few times and held the phone to his ear. After a few rings, the call went to voicemail.

“Harry’s not picking up,” Niall informed. He tapped the screen and once again held up the phone to his ear, hoping Nina would at least answer.

* * * * *

Nina couldn’t breath and didn’t realize she had collapsed onto the floor until she saw Kathleen hover above her. Nina’s eyes were fixated onto the glowing television screen and the breaking news that played before her. It wasn’t the masses of people and reporters who littered the Styles mansion that caught Nina off guard, but the several police cars, ambulance and coroner that caused her to panic.

“Witnesses report angry yelling and what sounded like an argument coming from the Styles residence before a loud, suspicious crash,” a news anchor, reported.

Behind her, chaos ensued as innocent spectators watched as officers lined the home with yellow police tape.

“Earlier in the evening, the son of Ashford Mayor Desmond Styles, Harry Styles, was seen entering the home before—“ the reporter suddenly stopped, throwing two fingers to her ear and the bud that was placed inside. Her eyes widened with great fear and her head turned around.

Camera crews flocked to a group of men and women wearing dark uniforms and serious expressions. Together the team of officials wheeled out a body bag towards a black coroner’s truck. Gasps, pointed fingers, and fear accessorized all individuals who witnessed the scene before them.

“Who is that?”

“Is that Harry Styles?”

“I think that’s Harry’s body!”

“His father did it!”

With her back against the couch and her phone to her ear, Nina turned away from the television screen, trying to gain a sense of it all. She cried profusely, as the automated voicemail kept playing in Nina’s ear. Kathleen fell to her knees, helping to ebb the anxiety that was rapidly rising within her sister.

“Ate! Ate! Look at me! What’s wrong?” Kathleen yelled, holding onto Nina’s shoulders.

“He’s not answering me,” Nina cried, letting go of her phone.

Not a moment too soon, and the phone that lay on the floor began to vibrate as an upbeat melody filled their ears. Nina looked down to the glowing screen and with shaking hands, she lifted it off of the floor. Sliding her finger across the screen, she held it up to her ear.

“H-he-hello?” she stuttered.

“Nina! Are you home? Are you alone?”

“Who’s this?” Nina asked softly.

“Nina it’s me, Niall! I’m calling to warn you about Jezabelle. She’s gone loony! Please stay inside, stay safe… I don’t know how serious she is, but she wants to get rid of both you and Harry,” Niall frantically explained from the other end.

“I think she’s already started,” Nina answered, an emotionless tone to her voice, “and she needs me next.”

Without letting Niall answer, she hung up the phone and threw it off to the side. Nina took a deep breath and releasing it with a rough blow. She hugged her knees as Kathleen hugged her, rubbing her shoulders with a comforting touch.

“Is everything okay?” Kathleen asked. After a few moments, Nina lifted her head.

“Kathleen, a couple of months ago, you landed in the hospital. Why?”

“Ate, you know… I got jumped,” Kathleen truthfully answered, unsure of where this conversation was headed.

“And why did you get jumped?”

“Because…” Kathleen began, swallowing the lump that was in her throat, “because I was defending my family.”

“Why?” Nina asked with abrasiveness.

“Ate, where are you going with this?”

“Just answer the question!”

Kathleen stared at her sister, who had a solitary tear dribbling down her cheek. She leaned over, wiping it away with her thumb. Her hands dropped, and held onto Nina’s,

“Because I love my family. And I would do anything for you.”

Nina closed her eyes and nodded her head. She bit her lip, trying to keep any more tears from falling, but like the storm outside, they plummeted.

“Which means you would understand that I would’ve done anything to protect Harry. I love him,”

“What do you mean would’ve? Why are you saying it like you don’t love him anymore?” Kathleen questioned, eyebrows furrowed.

“The opposite. I love him more than I could ever comprehend… I have to go,” Nina stood up, and proceeded for the door.

“Ate! Where are you going?” Kathleen followed suit, “what’s going on? Ate!”

Nina was out the door, slamming it shut behind her. The air was so frosty, it was as if her tears were turning into icicles the moment they left her tear ducts. She ran down the street, leaving deep footprints in the white snow with the words till I stop breathing, wavering in her mind.

Commenting is the least I can do to tell you how much I love and appreciate your story, and it doesn't take too much time to do so, so I figure why not comment? But oh my gosh, I cannot believe that was the last chapter and all that's left is an epilogue. And this chapter just… I think it slightly killed me - more than you already nonliterally have that is - when you killed her off and then with Harry and everything. And freaking Jezabelle… Don't even get me started on how much I want to murder that bitch right now. The chapter is written beautifully nonetheless, and I can't wait for the epilogue. xx
