To Fall So Deep

Tuesday

When Nina woke up that Tuesday morning, she knew it wasn’t going to be a simple and ordinary Tuesday as much as she wished it could be. It was voting day, which meant the majority of Ashford would be hitting the booths to vote for whom they deemed worthy to lead their beloved city.

After her usual morning routine of showering, blow-drying her hair, and slipping into her uniform, she threw on a thick jacket before heading downstairs. Kathleen was already sitting at the table eating cereal, an empty bowl across from her. Nina took a seat, grabbing one of the cereal choices off to the side and poured cold milk over the sugary breakfast selection.

“Ready for today Ate?” Kathleen asked looking up from her almost-empty bowl, the milk now brown from her chocolate cereal.

“Not really. But we can’t really avoid it,” Nina shrugged, shoving the metal spoon into her mouth.

“No matter the outcome, we’ll still be a family,” Kathleen declared, and Nina couldn’t help but to smile at her positivity.

“You’re right,” Nina beamed, Kathleen grinning right back at her sister.

Nina and Kathleen finished their breakfast talking about topics that had nothing to do with the election. They steered clear away from things that would only cause stress and instead chose to laugh about silly things they saw on TV or read on Twitter. Corrine eventually came down the stairs wearing one of her many pantsuits, glasses, and her hair tied up in a ponytail at the nape of her neck.

“Good morning girls,” Corrine forced a smile, grabbing the coffee pot and pouring the remaining dark liquid into a thermos. “Today’s a big day.”

“Wooo,” Nina sarcastically cheered, slumping into her chair and letting her head fall into the palm of her hand.

“No matter the results,” Corrine sighed, joining Nina and Kathleen at the table, “things will still be okay. We have our health, we have each other, you girls have your education… We can do this together.”

“We know,” Kathleen stated with a smile.

Corrine nodded, “finish your breakfast soon, and we can head out.”

Nina ate the rest of her cereal in silence; contemplating the many ways today could go. To say she was nervous was an understatement—a big one. Nina was more than nervous for what would come ahead in the day. She was terrified. In addition to Nina’s shaking knees, and fidgeting fingers, Corrine could sense the anxiety. Without a word, she placed a familiar orange bottle next to Nina’s empty bowl.

‘Thanks,” Nina mumbled, taking out one pill and popping it into her mouth.

During the ride to school, Nina’s magical medication fizzled into her system making her muscles and mind relax. As Corrine parked the car, Nina was able to brace herself for... whatever, really. Kathleen reached over and gave Nina an assuring squeeze on her hand. Nina smiled.

“Ready?” Corrine asked. Her body was turned in her seat to face the girls. After Kathleen gave her a nod, all three exited the car and progressed to the looming school before them.

It felt like her first day at Ashford Academy--- Corrine leading the girls, Kathleen walking confidently, and Nina hugging herself with her head down low. But instead of condescending stares and pointed fingers, the Dela Vera women were welcomed that Tuesday morning with more support than expected.

Students, staff, and faculty members walked the campus proudly with “Vote Dela Vera” pins on their chests. As the women passed, Ashford Academy supporters waved, and shouted kind comments in their direction.

“Good luck Dela Vera,”

“Vote Dela Vera,”

“No Styles, no Holocaust,”

Kathleen beamed in delight, linking her arm excitedly with Corrine, who was shocked with the overwhelming support. Nina’s head lifted in the positive response, and smiled to herself.

Maybe last Saturday’s fiasco at the open forum wasn’t a complete farce?

“Nina! Kathleen! Professor!” Leina ran happily towards the Dela Vera trio and embraced them with a tight hug.

“Leina, thank you,” Corrine pulled away from the hug, “I’ll see you in class.”

“Dude! This is bloody amazing ‘innit?” Leina whooped, gesturing to the several people sporting Dela Vera pins.

“I never would’ve expected any of this,” Nina breathed, “especially what happened on Saturday.”

Especially with what happened on Saturday,” Leina repeated with passion, “I think Harry turning his back on his own father really showed Ashford what kind of man Desmond Styles really is. I think people are starting to really come to their senses about him.”

“Maybe my dad actually has a fighting chance to win?” Nina pondered out loud.

“More than a fighting chance,” Leina predicted. She pulled onto Nina’s arm and lead her from the courtyard towards the main corridor, “come on. Let me show you.”

Once inside the main corridor, Nina was once again overwhelmed with the amount of support from her peers. A roar of applause wavered the moment Nina’s presence was known. She received pats on the back from people in her class, people she saw in the halls, and people she wasn’t even aware went to Ashford Academy.

Leina pulled Nina into the cafeteria where two large projector screens sat at the very front where a live broadcast of the voting results were displayed on the white canvas. Nina’s eyes grew, as she saw the blue and green bars moving upwards on the screen representing the casted and recorded ballots. Both candidates were neck in neck with one another. It was anyone’s race, and Nina was confident that her father had a chance of winning it all.

“Oh my gosh,” Nina was taken aback, and her body couldn’t let her do anything but crash into the nearest chair and take it all in.

“How do you feel?” Leina asked, sitting in the chair across from her.

“Honestly,” Nina started, “overwhelmed. But in a good way.”

“Good, because things are starting to look up,” Leina declared confidently.

“Dela Vera pins! Get your Dela Vera pins!” a voice echoed through the cafeteria.

“Show your Dela Vera support!”

Nina turned around in her seat to see all five wolf pack boys holding boxes to their waists, passing out circular pins to students and staff. Yet again, Nina felt a surge of warmth and happiness take over her body at the sight before her. It wasn’t just Harry, who despite the surname he bares, supporting her, it was Liam, Niall, Louis, and Zayn who held the same position.

“Hey baby!” Harry called out, waving his hand neurotically in the air. He had a very large dimpled grin etched across his face at the sight of seeing Nina.

Harry approached the table, setting down the cardboard box on the table. He leaned down to give Leina a hug, and with the amount of joy he hoarded in his body that morning caused him to feel free. With his strong arms, Harry pushed the chair Nina was sitting in, allowing space for him to step in and sit on her lap.

“Harry, what are you doing?” Nina threw her head back in a fit of giggles.

“You always get to sit on my lap, and I think it’s my turn to sit on yours. We can’t be sexist here,” Harry wrapped his arms around Nina’s neck, as he looked at her lovingly. He wore a black beanie that pushed back his curly hair, and Nina was able to look back at him without having to push his hair out of the way.

“Fine, then that means it’s your turn to make me a sandwich,” Nina joked, poking him in the chest. Her attention turned to the box of pins on the table, “did you do all this?”

“Mmmhmm,” Harry answered proudly, “with help from the lads of course.”

Just then, the other boys approached the table setting their nearly empty boxes down. They high-fived one another happily, pleased with their hard work.

“Guys, thank you so much for your support,” Nina said.

“It’s the least we can do for you Nina,” Louis gave her a thumbs-up.

“Our parents may not be too pleased with us right now, but it’ll be all worth it in the end if your dad wins,” Zayn expressed.

“But what if he doesn’t win?” Nina mentioned.

“If he doesn’t, then it’ll still be worth it. We’ve never really stood up for anything this important in our lives anyway,” Niall professed.

“It’s not just for you, it’s for us too,” Liam disclosed.

The school day was spent with leisure. Teachers turned their televisions screens to the news broadcast of the election, as students pursued independent work. The support from Ashford Academy continued through out the day, and students who were in favor of the Styles campaign stood their ground, but with respect to the Dela Vera family.

By the end of the day however, emotions rocketed in different directions...

* * * *

“You okay Nina?” Liam asked, turning his direction to Nina, who sat next to him.

“Yea,” Nina softly answered. “I could be better but, you know…”

Nina, Kathleen, Leina, Elissia, and the wolf pack sat down on the front staircase outside of the school. With their heads hung low, they clutched onto one another for support. A group of cheering students happily jumped passed them screaming Styles’ name in the air.

“Ugh,” Leina scoffed, as she rolled her eyes. She reached out and placed her hand on Nina’s shoulder, giving it a light squeeze.

“How about you baby Dela Vera, are you okay?” Harry asked Kathleen, who was sitting in front of him on the step below.

Kathleen turned her head, “I honestly believed my dad would win, Harry… no offense, though.”

“None taken,” Harry leaned forward to rub Kathleen’s shoulders in support, “I wanted your dad to win anyway.”

“I really wished all this struggle was going to be worth it; that all the backlash and all the hurt, it was going to pay off,” Nina sighed. Harry wrapped his arms around Nina, and she buried her face into his chest.

“If you guys are down, want to come to the restaurant? We can all eat our feelings there… it’s on the house,” Elissia suggested, her head resting on Niall’s shoulder. Niall was the only one sitting on the stoop with a slight smirk on his face.

“Free food? I’m down,” Louis piped up first, raising his hand.

“Me too. You guys have those pistachio Macarons that I like so much,” Zayn mentioned.

“To Vitale’s Place?” Kathleen motioned, turning her head to look at everyone around her.

“To Vitale’s Place!” they repeated, the tone of defeat in their voices. Liam punched his fist in the air in an attempt to lessen the blow, but quickly dropped his arm to his side, as the fist pump did nothing to lift his esteem.

The group stood up from the stoop, brushing off the dirt from their bums and proceeded down the steps. Harry pulled Nina’s arm, and she turned to look at him as Elissia, Leina, and Niall walked around them.

“Babe,” Harry started, “are you going to be alright?”

Nina let out a smile, and cupped her hands around Harry’s face, “yes. I mean it. I’m disappointed—who wouldn’t be? But as long as I have you, the wolf pack, the girls, and my family, I know that all this blah will blow over.”

“I love your positivity,” Harry kissed Nina on the lips, smiling through the kiss.

“I’m just tired of being sad, scared, and hurting… I had enough of that for the last few months. I’m ready to finally embrace the happy,” Nina honestly expressed.

Notes

Happy Sunday, friends!!

How's everyone doing? Well, I hope. So here is Chapter 34!! Like I said in my last Author's Note, this is a "filler" chapter more or less... I actually don't believe in "filler chapters." A chapter is a chapter nonetheless, and each one serves a purpose. As long as it makes sense within the story, then it's up to the author to convey it. I knew from the get-go that Nina & Kathleen's dad wouldn't win the election, and that's what Chapter 34's purpose is: the election results.... Any who, starting from Chapter 35, things are going to pick up, and we'll be counting down to the last 10-12ish chapters. Oh MYYY!!! Have a great day guys, and thank you,

-Erica Jaine <3

Commenting is the least I can do to tell you how much I love and appreciate your story, and it doesn't take too much time to do so, so I figure why not comment? But oh my gosh, I cannot believe that was the last chapter and all that's left is an epilogue. And this chapter just… I think it slightly killed me - more than you already nonliterally have that is - when you killed her off and then with Harry and everything. And freaking Jezabelle… Don't even get me started on how much I want to murder that bitch right now. The chapter is written beautifully nonetheless, and I can't wait for the epilogue. xx
