September 2017

As he walked from Spanish to the Business classroom, Harry couldn’t help but wonder what had happened with Liv. It had seemed like one minute she was fine, and then all of a sudden she was angry with him.

Did she not like it when he put her pens behind his ear?

Was she worried he would break them or something?

Maybe she particularly liked pens with flowers on the end?

Or maybe it was specifically that pen?

He had no clue.

He pushed door open into the Business room and saw that Luke was already there, saving him a space. Harry walked over and slumped himself into the chair. Luke barely noticed, too busy having a conversation with one of the other boys who had come back after last year. After a few seconds and a nod in Harry’s direction, the boy went to the other side of the classroom and Luke turned to his brother.

“What’s up with you?”

“Nothing, I just had Spanish with Liv and I think I upset her but I don’t know what I’ve done…” Harry muttered as he took the pen he had borrowed from Liv out of his pocket and put it on the table in front of him.

“She’s probably in a mood about something else, she’ll have forgotten about it by lunchtime…” Luke said, but seeing the dissatisfied look on his brother’s face he added, “Are you sure you didn’t do anything?” Harry thought back to the previous lesson. He had been making Liv laugh with the pen behind his ear, then they had gotten on with their work and then at the end of the lesson she was mad.

“Nothing that I can think of?” He shrugged then turned and grinned at his brother as he remembered the girl who had been sat in front of him, “How serious are you about that Alice girl?”

Luke looked at his brother with raised eyebrows and a small smile.

“It’s me we’re talking about, I’m never serious…”

“Good, because the girl who sits in front of me in Spanish looked like your type so I invited her tomorrow, name’s Jess.”

Luke put his hand on his chest and pretending to wipe a tear from his cheek with a small smile at his brother.

“When your wingman is so good that you don’t even have to be in the room!” He said with a fake sniff, “So proud!” The two boys looked at one another for a few seconds before bursting into laughter earning a few weird looks from the students surrounding them.

The lesson passed by quickly as Mr. Spears, the better and nicer of the three business teachers, actually liked the twins. He was short, ginger and a little pudgy around the middle, but he had a friendly smile and worked hard with student’s who needed the extra push, something that fit well with Luke. He had worked out quickly that if he could keep Luke’s attention that Harry was more likely to follow suit considering that Luke was usually the instigator when it came to bad behaviour.

At the end of the lesson, the twins packed their stuff away walked to their General Studies class. Liv was in the class with them but she sat at the front next to one of her girlfriends. Luke didn’t think anything of it, but Harry was certain that she really was ignoring him now.

After the lesson he tried to pull her aside and talk to her but she had left the room before he had even vacated his seat. He tried to push it out of his mind, reasoning that she just must want to not take her bag to lunch with her. He was doing his best not to think about it, pretending to pay attention to what Luke was talking about as they were walking toward the dining hall. It was only once they both received the same text from their mother telling them that they would be going to dinner tonight with their father’s parents so they had to come straight home that Harry was actually distracted for a few seconds.

“Great, more bullshit!” Luke muttered, shoving the phone back his pocket in distaste.

They could smell the dining hall before they saw it. Luke inhaled deeply as they rounded the corner to the back door that only sixth formers were allowed to come in through.

“Is it pizza or drumsticks? I can’t tell?”

Harry laughed at his brother’s curious expression as he held the door open for Luke to walk through. His brother made a beeline for the dinner queue, but Harry stopped and looked around the room, hoping to see Liv already sitting down at one of the tables. His heart sank when he realised that she wasn’t there yet. He joined his brother in the queue, keeping an eye on the door as they moved along and then found themselves a round table off to the side, near the windows.

“Why are you staring at the door?” Luke asked as he picked up his slice of pizza, inspected it a little and then took a bite. Harry shook his head and pulled his eyes away from the entrance reluctantly to meet his brother’s.

“I’m not?” He said, trying to keep his voice from sounding unnecessarily defensive.

“Well you are, but okay…” Luke raised an eyebrow as he took another bite. He looked like he was about to say something else to Harry but his eyes settled on something past Harry’s head and suddenly his hand shot up, indicating to someone else that they should come and join them. Harry’s heart leapt and then plummeted again when the wrong familiar face took the seat next to his accompanied by a guy that Harry had never seen before.

“Ashton, this is Harry, Luke’s twin!” Liam said in a bright voice. Harry nodded politely at the new guy as he took the seat next to him even though he had the urge to tell him that seat was for Liv. It was another ten minutes when she finally came through the door, looking less flustered than she had when she had left the Spanish classroom an hour ago.

“Liam!” Liv squealed, hugging him from behind as she approached the table. Harry instantly felt jealous, but pretended otherwise, letting out a fake chuckle as though he found her enthusiasm at Liam’s presence cute. He didn’t. It didn’t get any better when her eyes went wide at Ashton like she thought he was cute when he was introduced to her.

“Well, she’s a pretty one...” Ashton said with a grin as he watched her walk to the front of the hall to get her lunch before turning back to finish his pudding.

“She’s not worth it mate…” Liam said glancing at Harry who instantly frowned at the insulting comment toward Liv. Of course she was worth it. How could he even think such a thing?

“She’s Harry’s best mate, and unless you’re intending to marry her, he won’t hesitate to break your face if she gets upset over anything…” Liam continued, gesturing toward Harry’s face as though it was evidence enough. Ashton looked over to see what Liam was talking about. He laughed and held his hands up in surrender, satisfying Harry’s silent panic that the Aussie would make a move. He wasn’t totally certain that Liv would have said no if he had.

“What frees are you all on?” Liv said to no-one in particular as she sat down at the table with her tray.

“Period four?” Harry said, looking at her hopefully but she just nodded and looked toward Luke.

“Period five.” His brother said. He felt his heart deflate as she grinned widely and grabbed his wrist excitedly.

“Ooh! It’s been so long since we’ve had Liv and Lukey-…” Luke glared at her and she stopped to correct herself, “Liv and Luke time!” his face softened and he smiled at her with a nod. Harry’s jealousy was going into overdrive watching her be so emphatic about spending time with his brother.

He pushed his chair abruptly back from the table without another word and took his tray back to the dirty dish racks earning a few confused looks from the other people sitting at the table. He didn’t care though, he needed to calm down before he accidentally let slip what he was really thinking. Shoving his tray into the slot aggressively, he took a deep breath to calm down. He was mostly annoyed with himself for getting so jealous when he knew that Luke would never go there with someone he was so close to, he didn’t like to ‘shit where he ate’ as he had put it when the question had arisen in the past.

“Any particular reason you’re staring at the tray rack like you want to strangle it?”

Harry turned to see the girl who had sat in front of them in Spanish looking at him curiously as she tried to suppress a laugh.

“Sorry, just got some shit news…” He smiled at her politely and stepped aside so that she could slide her own tray in. He was about to walk back to the table when he realised that Jess could be his ticket to take Luke’s attention away from Liv and hesitated. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to be that guy, until he saw her laughing wholeheartedly, head thrown back, at something Luke had just said. He clenched his fist and turned back to Jess.

“Luke’s over there, come say hi?” He said, plastering his best grin on his face and pointing toward the table. Jess’ eyes went wide as she gave him a small smile and nodded.
