Only You

Chapter 5

The next morning I half expected to arrive at school and find out yesterday had all been a dream. Harry would be walking in with his friends and Kendall, all of them smiling and laughing, oblivious to my existence. I pulled into the car park and saw that Harry's car wasn't parked in its usual spot but instead, it was sitting in the space next to where I would usually park mine. I grimaced as I pulled in next to his black Renault Clio Sports edition, and felt slightly embarrassed about how my own car looked so crap next to it. He stepped out of the driver's side as I pulled in next to him, and I realised he had been waiting for me. I cut the engine, grabbed my bag and got out to see him waiting at the back of my car.

"You know you don't have to do this," I said awkwardly as he greeted me with a smile, "Hanging around me is going to seriously damage your reputation." the smile faded slightly and hurt flashed in his green eyes momentarily.

"I know I don't." he said blankly, "You seem to have a very negative impression of me, you know? Over the last two days have I given you any reason to believe I give a shit what people think?" I felt my face redden slightly and shook my head. We walked together in silence through the car park and I could feel that people were staring at me even more than they had the day before. Taylor glanced up from her phone and did a double take when she saw me walking over with Harry in tow. Last night was Taylor's weekly family night which meant I hadn't had a chance to explain everything that had gone on the day before. I was praying that she would remember her social skills as we approached her and remember to close her mouth since she currently looked like a fish.

"Taylor, Harry, Harry, Taylor." Taylor shook her head slightly as if to bring herself back to reality and flashed an award-winning smile his way. Harry met her eyes and the corners of his mouth turned up as he studied her face. They stood there smiling at one another for what, to me, felt like a second too long, and I felt a weird pang of something I had never felt before.

"Anyway," I spoke loudly and Harry's face seemed to flush slightly as he pulled his eyes away to look at me instead, "Tay, Harry is... well it's a long story..." I looked at Harry for help to describe how life had become so weird in the last couple of days.

"I'm just making sure Kendall stops being a nob, basically." He said matter of factly as we walked down the path and through the gate.

"That's really nice of you Harry!" Taylor said, not taking her eyes from him, but reaching down and squeezing my elbow in excitement. I felt the pang again when he smiled sheepishly at the compliment. What was going on with me?

"Anyway Harry, this building is close enough, thanks for walking me, see you in the study room for free period first!" I spoke quickly, not giving Harry, or Taylor for that matter, any time to protest as I grabbed her arm and pulled her into the humanities building next to us. She called goodbye to him over her shoulder as the door closed behind us and I suddenly felt more relaxed now that we were without Harry. Taylor giggled as we walked along.

"I just walked into school with Harry fucking Styles! S! This is the best day ever!" She was grinning from ear to ear with happiness but for some reason, I wasn't happy for her having lived out one of her high school dreams and I was finding her constant babbling about how great it was really annoying. She continued on, even once we were sat in our form room and eventually I had to try and just blank out her voice by looking out of the window at the birds fighting over a piece of food they had just found.

"Wait!" she gasped suddenly, not smiling anymore, "I thought you dealt with Kendall yesterday? Did something else happen, S?" I looked at her, nodded and began relaying the events of yesterday. She looked as shocked as I had felt by the time I had finished, "Jesus! That's mental! Well, at least one good thing has come from it!" she said excitedly and began talking about Harry again.

Taylor was gutted that she had geography first period while I had a free and I had to convince her that she was not skipping, that her school was way more important than a boy. Reluctantly she agreed, we parted ways and I head down to the study room.

Harry was already sitting in the study room with Louis when I got there and apart from them the room was empty. They were playing a game that involved throwing screwed up paper balls around the room pointlessly by the looks of the mess that they were making. He was too busy playing to even notice I was there until he threw one of the balls a bit too hard and it hit me on the head on my approach.

"Shit! Sorry Selena!" He laughed as I rolled my eyes and threw the ball back to him, "Do you want to play?" I swiped some of the paper balls aside and put my stuff on the table facing him, and began unpacking books.

"No, I have work to do." I muttered as I dug through my bag looking for a pen, "Maybe you should think about doing some yourself for once." He raised his eyebrows at me and his smile faded.

"God, we have the fun police over here Lou." he said, jerking his head toward me before turning to face me so I would know he was talking to me instead now, "There you go again making assumptions! How could you know I should be working more? You don't know me!" He sounded slightly exasperated which instilled me with some confidence.

"I don't need to know you to know you should be working harder. I know that Mrs. Jones hands the papers back in grade order from lowest to highest and you're always one of the first to get yours back and I know I spend my time in this room trying to block you out because you and your friends seem to think that it's a social space."

Harry opened his mouth but then closed it again and just sat there wordlessly for a couple of minutes. Louis was staring at me as though I'd just said something completely unheard of in civil conversation but looked even more surprised when Harry leant down and pulled his own copy of Hamlet from his bag, opened it and began reading without another word. I couldn't believe it myself but decided it would be best to try and get on with my own work.

The room was silent but for some reason, I found myself still being distracted by Harry. I chewed on my pen pretending to think about what to write as I watched him out of the corner of my eye. His brow was furrowed and his green eyes shining as they flicked back and forth, studying the page. I caught myself almost thinking that he was kind of cute when he was concentrating. He reached up and pushed his hand through his long hair, drawing my attention to it. I instantly felt bad for what I had said on Monday, it was evident that his hair was in no way the greasy mess that I had always thought I could see out of the corner of my eye. I found myself wanting to see if it was as silky as it looked but I quickly realised how weird that was and looked away embarrassed at my own thoughts, willing myself to get back to work and concentrate. I just couldn't seem to though and a few minutes later I found myself staring again.

"Have I got something on my face?" he asked without looking up, making me jump. I flushed red, I couldn't believe he had just caught me staring at him.

"Yeah, I think there's a bit of fluff on your right eyebrow." I said, quickly trying to hide my embarrassment. I didn't even know why I had been staring at him so intently and now I was making excuses, I felt ridiculous.

"Ok, thanks." He said with a smirk. He didn't look up, and he didn't wipe his brow. We continued to work for the rest of the period in silence, and it was actually kind of nice.

@Bunnyboo
Thank you so much for reading! Writing is my dream and I am obsessed with these characters and their stories so it's so important to me that it is told the right way... At the time when I started writing this it was a distraction because I was in a tough situation and I needed something to take my mind off of it. Now, I am in such a good place and I can see that this story hasn't been written the way that it should have been - the way I want it to be read and I don't want to spoil the ending on a sub-par version. Thank you for being so patient, I appreciate it so much and I hope that I do their story justice in my retelling.
