Only You

Chapter 38

I jumped awake as the front door slammed. I rubbed my eyes and realised that I had fallen asleep on the couch watching the football earlier. I reached for the remote and turned it off before walking out into the hallway to see what was going on. Meg was at the bottom of the stairs kicking off her school shoes angrily, her brow furrowed and her breathing ragged.

"What's up with-" I didn't get to finish asking her what was wrong as the door flew open again and Jensen marched in with his mouth in a tight line and a vein popping out of the side of his head.

"Get your arse up those damn stairs, right now!" He spat at her as he threw her school bag on the floor in fury, glaring at Meg.

"You aren't dad Jensen, stop trying to act like you are!" She yelled back at him just as furiously. Jensen looked as though she had just slapped him round the face and I could feel that this argument could take a nasty turn. I tried to intervene before anyone said something they didn't mean. Our situation was hard enough without these two falling out.

"Guys, can someone calm down for a second and tell me what the hell is wrong?" I said firmly taking a step into the corridor, they both ignored me though. I had never been able to understand the kind of angry that my siblings were able to get. I never argued like this with either of them, or anyone else for that matter.

"No, you're right! Jared and I are not your parents, but we do a hell of a lot more for you than they ever have! When are you going to realise how much we give up to be here for you and this is how you repay us? By fighting in school and getting suspended!" I looked at Megan surprised as Jensen continued his rant, "You are the most ungrateful little girl, I've ever met. I'm glad I'm not your dad!" I looked at Jensen taking a step forward before he took this to a level he wouldn't be able to come back from, "I'd be damn well disappointed with you if I was!"

Too late. He had said it.

Megan stormed up the stairs crying and he stormed into the kitchen, leaving me standing awkwardly in the hallway not knowing who I was supposed to deal with first. I decided to give Meg a moment to herself and deal with my brother first. I walked in and he was reaching into the fridge for a beer.

"That was uncalled f-" I started firmly, but he cut me off.

"I am really not in the mood for the lecture Jared, she's been a fucking nightmare today!" He snapped as he popped the bottle top off, threw it onto the counter and took a gulp. I took a few steps into the room and watched as he leant against the unit opposite me, his eyes closed as he pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration.

"So she got suspended, you weren't exactly the model student Jen." I said calmly as I walked to the fridge to get myself a beer. He sighed.

"I know we were little shits... but we had no one to care... we had nannies from those god awful agencies, and it was never the same one twice... we were messed up." He took another swig and I copied the movement, "Jared, we give up everything for her, she has two people who would lay down and die for her without question... I just don't get why she would need to acts up, you know?" He sighed again. I was glad he was finally calming down and open for reasonable conversation.

"For starters, she is an angel compared to how we were, she barely ever acts up, and alright, I get that when she does, usually it's bad, but I think that even though she appreciates us, we aren't her parents, and it still sucks for her that she literally sees them about six weeks a year if she's lucky, so give her a break..." He hesitated and then nodded before taking another drink.

"Yeah, I know... maybe you should go and talk to her, check she's okay... I was a prick before and I doubt she will want to see me after what I said..." He said in a hushed voice before walking over to the breakfast bar and sitting down sadly.

I nodded and left the room. One down, one to go. I walked up the stairs slowly and quietly, trying to see if there were any noises coming from my sister's room as I approached. I was about to knock when I heard the familiar sound of the FacetTime dial tone. I paused. The dial tone ended and there was a muted thump from the other side of the door. I closed my eyes sadly before knocking gently and slowly opening the door to poke my head in.

"Hey Meggy Moo, can I come in?" I said softly as she looked up from the end of her bed to see who it was. I saw her iPad sitting about three feet away on the carpet and realised she had tossed it when her call had gone unanswered. She nodded and I could see the light reflecting off of her wet cheeks. I walked over and took a seat on her bed next to her.

"Jen said you were fighting in school? That you got suspended?" I said gently, deciding that getting to the root of the problem was the best way to start. She looked down at her hands and I could see she was embarrassed as she nodded.

"Today we got told it's Parent Day on the last day of school..." I nodded waiting patiently for her to continue, "and Carly was being nasty at break, saying that you and Jensen couldn't come because you aren't my parents so I would have to stay on my own for the day... I punched her when she called me an orphan..." I put my arm around my little sister and pulled her onto my lap and cuddled her in.

"Well, you aren't an orphan, mum and dad just have to be away to do their jobs and that's just something that we have to live with in our family... Jen and I aren't your parents, but we're big brothers, which is even better because parents say things like 'Carly was being unkind but you shouldn't have hit her' but we say 'Carly's a poo head and I don't blame you for punching her in the face, I hope you went for the nose'!" This made her giggle a little, "See, better than parents."

"I tried FaceTiming mum before... she didn't answer..." She put her head on my chest and I felt her breathe in heavily, "I miss them Jerry."

"I know... me too." I lied for her sake. I had gotten over my parents not being around a long time ago and no longer even thought them as anything more than visitors. Jensen and I had stopped calling them mum and dad, unless Meg was around, years ago. It was quite sad really. Every now and then I wished that we had parents that were actually around, but then I realise I wouldn't be as close to my siblings as I am if they were here all the time. "When I get sad though, I just remember that I have a big brother who is my best friend, and the coolest little sister in the world!" She smiled up at me but after a second it faltered.

"Does Jensen still want to be my big brother?" I rolled my eyes with a small smile and hugged her in close.

"Of course he does. He-" I was interrupted by the door opening slowly and Jensen peering around the corner.

"I was listening because I wanted to see if you were mad at me still... have you really just asked if I still want to be your big brother?" He asked and raised an eyebrow with a small smile. Pushing herself off my lap, she walked to Jensen and hugged him around the waist, "I love you Meg, I'm always going to be your big brother."

"Would you really be disappointed in me if you were dad?" she mumbled into his side and I could tell that she was close to crying again.

"Of course not, I said that because I was angry. Believe me, I would be- scratch that, I am proud of you." I smiled at them both, relieved that the situation had been resolved when I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I stepped outside of the room and smiled when I saw it was Selena.

"Hey gorgeous." I said cheerily walking into my own room.

"Hey, I was thinking of driving over if that's cool?" I smiled. That girl could come round anytime of day and I would be over the moon to see her face, no matter what I had dealt with a matter of minutes before.

"Cool, see you soon." I hung up and began tidying away the few items of clothing that were strewn around the room in anticipation for her arrival. About fifteen minutes later the doorbell rang and I practically flew down the stairs to answer it considering I hadn't seen her in a week. I answered the door with a casual smile. She was beautiful. Her hair was a little messy from her day in school, and her make up a little worn, but I still found my heart trying jump out of my chest.

"Hey you." She said seductively taking a step closer to me, "Am I allowed to come in, or do I have to stand on the doorstep all night?" I smirked and stood in the middle of the doorway, playing her little game.

"Payment is required for entry, miss." I said in my poshest voice that I could muster up, watching as her bright eyes shone back at me playfully.

"Oh right, and what's the price?" She took a step closer and whispered seductively. I leant down a little so that my face was less than six inches from her own.

"I don't think you can afford it." I replied quietly with a grin. She giggled and leant up on her tiptoes, pressing her lips lightly to mine.

"I guess I'll just have to pay you another way once I'm inside..." She whispered. I felt myself grow a little hard in my pants. She giggled as I took her hand and led her in and up the stairs straight to my room, I didn't want to wait for this. On the way up the stairs, we passed Meg and Jensen, who rolled his eyes with a smirk as we rushed to my room. I closed the door and turned to the gorgeous girl in front of me. I crushed my lips to hers and pushed her suit jacket to the floor as I did, desperate to have my hands on her skin.

"That was so good!" She breathed as I flopped down on the bed beside her. I grinned and lifted my arm for her to move her head onto my chest. We talked for a little while before getting dressed in PJs, so we could go downstairs and get some food. On approaching the kitchen we could hear voices inside but I presumed that it was Meg and Jen and didn't think anything of it.

"... so now we can go for a week instead of just five days." I looked at Selena, who had gotten visibly tense now that we were able to actually distinguish the voices coming from the kitchen. It was Alex. I squeezed her hand reassuringly as I pushed the door open and saw Jen and Alex sitting at the breakfast bar. They turned to look at us and I prayed that Jensen wouldn't make it obvious what Selena and I had been up to for the sake of not being awkward.

"Judging by Selena's hair, I'm guessing you still know your way around a mattress." Alex chuckled inappropriately. My eyes instantly flew to my girlfriend who was two steps behind me hoping that there was some kind of small possibility that she hadn't heard. No such luck, her eyes had gone wide and she looked like she was imagining slapping her around the face. Jensen instantly did his best to change the subject.

"Guys, Alex was just coming round to confirm dates for skiing. I told her that we can do any dates after the sixteenth of December since that's when Frank and Claire will be around to watch Meg, so it's down to Lena and her friends." I looked at him thankfully before turning to Selena.

"The guys don't have anything planned so anytime after the fifteenth is good for us." she said bluntly before walking into the kitchen, grabbing a bag of crisps off the side and leaving the room without another word. I reached for my own bag and then turned to Alex as I neared the door.

"Can you just give the whole 'in case you'd forgotten, he was mine first' thing a rest for just ten minutes and actually try and get on with her?" I asked tiredly, with a sigh. Alex smiled at me and waved her hand nonchalantly.

"Not my fault she can't take a joke, JJ, maybe it's just her age showing through." I rolled my eyes but didn't say anything else. I thought both of them were being pretty immature about it if I was being completely honest, but this was one of the times when I really noticed the three year age gap between Selena and I.

Notes

So I thought it would be nice to get something from Jared's perspective for once, and to see what his family dynamic is like, it's just a bit of a filler chapter for now though, sorry.

Thanks for reading guys,

@Bunnyboo
Thank you so much for reading! Writing is my dream and I am obsessed with these characters and their stories so it's so important to me that it is told the right way... At the time when I started writing this it was a distraction because I was in a tough situation and I needed something to take my mind off of it. Now, I am in such a good place and I can see that this story hasn't been written the way that it should have been - the way I want it to be read and I don't want to spoil the ending on a sub-par version. Thank you for being so patient, I appreciate it so much and I hope that I do their story justice in my retelling.
