Chapter 6 - Fortress of Solitude
Lunch. Halfway done with school. I needed food and to get some alone time. All day the rumors had been circling around about my whereabouts. I avoided Paisley, Harry, and Fiona like the plague. I would be bombarded with questions I had yet to find an answer to. Friday was a blur, I only remember bits and pieces. As for the rest of the week I stayed locked in my room to terrified to leave. I remember on Friday waking up in Paisleys room. She explained everything to me. She put me to bed and went downstairs to get me aspirin. Despite my injuries I managed to climb out of her first floor bedroom window and into the garden. I ran back home and climbed up the ladder I had strategically placed earlier that month and into my own window. I would do anything to avoid my parents and brother.
I stealthily entered the lunch room, pulling my hood over my head. In our usual spot I saw Fiona. Paisley had told her about what happened and she tried to call and text me but I ignored her. In line I saw Harry with a couple guys I don't recognize. To my left Paisley is sitting with the girls soccer team laughing about something. To my right Tana and her same clique of model gorgeous friends. Shit they have me surrounded. I make a dash for the exit. No lunch today I guess.
I exited the school and went back behind the bleachers. Cliche I know. I decided to pass the time I would read 1984 one of my favorites. To say I'm a literature nerd is an understatement. I always have enjoyed reading and writing. It's a good thing to because I dislike almost every other school subject besides it. I silently began to read from where I last left off. This has to be at least my 13th time reading this book. I read quietly until my favorite quote comes up.
" Who controls the past, controls the future," I slowly start reading out loud to myself.
" Who controls the present, controls the future," A low voice from behind me says. Startled I jump grab my book and without thinking chuck it at the voice. I look to see it whiz past me and hit...
" Zayn!" I yelled. It collided dead on with his " special " area. He let out a loud UMPH before tumbling to the ground. I stood there frozen processing what just happened.
He slowly opened his eyes. I just starred at him.
" Why are you smiling," He asked, his voice deep and raspy. I didn't even realize I was smiling. I involuntarily let out a light chuckle. He gave me a look before he too proceeded to laugh. It's been awhile since I've last genuinely laughed. We chuckled for a bit about the series of unfortunate events that just occurred, and I offered my hand to help him up. he grabbed onto it, but all at once pulled me down on top of him. I let out a mixture of a laugh and a shriek. He pushed me off of him and rolled onto his side so I was facing him.
" Dick," I laughed out.
" I'm the dick? You just assaulted me with your book and then laughed!" He grinned. Although I had only ever talked to him once in my life I guess I was quick to judge him. With dark eyes, stubble, and ink littered up his and down his arms, he looked stone cold. I would never guess he would be playful, funny, and knows great literature.
" You scared and interrupted me while I was trying to recite my favorite quote from my favorite book. Even if it had been unintentional for it to hit you, it serves you right," I replied. He shook his head rolled his eyes.
" I never took you for the violent type," He giggled. He giggled....wow.
" Never judge a book by it cover," I giggled too.
" That's a fitting saying for this situation," He replied.
" That it is," I responded. We laughed a bit before silence settled in.
" So what are you doing behind the bleachers on this fine day?" I asked.
' Well actually you see, I have been stalking you for years now and I saw this as a perfect opportunity to annoy you and get hit the crotch with a book," he replied sarcastically.
" You're very strategic," I responded.
" I usually come here for lunch, it's uhh...quiet," He finally answered.
" Oh I'm sorry have I intruded into your hideout?" I asked.
" No no it's fine I don't mind company," He said smiling.
He and I talked for the rest of lunch. We both have very similar book and music tastes. He's very sharp and witty. I am very thankful that he didn't ask me anything about why I was under the bleachers or why I was gone. He just understood it was a touchy subject. He and I exchanged numbers and he said I could join him anytime in his " fortress of solitude " aka under the bleachers. Maybe just maybe this was a sign things would get better? Probably not.
