Beating Heart

n i n e - human.

//Perrie//

Despite the fact that I enjoy the different company, I have other things I must do before the day ends. “I’ll be back in an hour or so to check on you before lunch.” I say as I open the door. I look over my shoulder to give my new friend a smile. She gives me a soft smile in return.

I quietly shut the door behind me, hoping not to make too much of a noise. My eyes glance to the left, to the dark side of the hallway – a place none of us hardly go to anymore. It used to not be so dark around here, but I assume as time passes on, things just happen to change. A sigh slips from my lips as I take a right and lead myself to the more enjoyable side of this house.

At first I wasn’t completely sure on speaking to Julianne, the last thing any of us want is for her to feel overwhelmed or frightened more than she is already. I suppose Niall’s convincing words changed my decision. He brought up the point that Julianne needed a girl present in her life right now – she hasn’t had a mother for a long time, so she deserves the comfort of a friend.

“How’d things go?” Niall asks as I enter the kitchen, a place I swear this boy is always at. “Well,” I sigh out, “She doesn’t say much, but I know she’ll come around soon.” I pull a chair out from the table and sit down, watching Niall fix himself something to drink.

“Did you tell her?” He questions. “Yeah. She seemed scared, but I guess if I were kidnapped and thrown into a nasty room and then told that I have some creepy restrictions.. then I guess I’d be afraid, too.” I roll my eyes as I look away from him – sometimes the decisions these men around here make aren’t all too great.

“You know it’s best for her.” Niall claims. “No, getting treated right and more like a guest than a prisoner would be best for her.” I’m usually not the one to go against the superior’s rules, but I’ve already had enough of this horrible idea. “You know it’s what he wants-” I cut Niall off as I stand up from my chair, violently shoving it to the table.

“I don’t care what the hell he says. She’s human, Niall. She has feelings, and she has a damn heart, unlike some of these people around here.” I yell out, my nerves shortening. I don’t get mad often, and not a lot of things get under my skin – but we all know what that girl has been through, and we’re supposed to be giving her something good instead of more torture.

I leave the kitchen and head straight to the gloomy end of the hallway, leaving Niall alone – maybe he’ll realize my point. As I make my way closer to the end, I begin to smell the dust and stale air. I reach the door and let out a sigh, I hate even opening this damn door sometimes.

Gently I turn the knob, the creaking noise always bothers me, but it’s something I’ve learned to live with. I open the door and step into the small room. Usually, like the rest of us, I take a right and go up the staircase – however, right now I need to do the opposite and go left.

I turn on my heel and grab the cold metal handle. I twist it and slowly pull the door open. I let out a few coughs as the dust enters my lungs – I wish Niall would have the courage to clean this part of the house, however I know that’ll never happen. I could hardly see the stairs, but the little light coming from the top of the staircase where the door was gave me enough leeway.

My heart skips a few beats as I get closer and closer to the top, there’s no telling what kind of reaction I’m about to receive. With a sigh I lift my fist to the door and knock a few times. I get no answer, not even a sound. After a few more seconds I repeat my knocking. Once again, no reply.

“She’s warming up.. I think this will work out, for the most part.” I say out into the harsh silence. I press my ear against the door, attempting to take in any sort of response I can get. Seconds tick by, still no reply. I know he’s there, he only leaves at night and it’s nearly noon.

The sound of a grunt catches my attention – at least I know he heard me, he hears everything.
