Chapter 9
It had been twelve hours. I had been dreading this. I knew Sarah was fighting to come back, so I wasn’t going to give up on her either.
“Harry,” I heard, but I ignore it.
“Harry,” the person laid a hand on my shoulder, “Come on.”
“No.” I said. I wasn’t moving, I wasn’t leaving her.
“Harry,” the person knelt down so they could look me in the face. It was Louis. “You heard what the doctor said.” I could hear that he was trying to keep his voice even.
“I don’t care.” I mumbled, looking back up at Sarah. “I’m not leaving her.”
He looked up at someone behind me. I didn’t care what they were thinking, I wasn’t leaving her. What if the doctors were wrong? What if she woke up and I wasn’t here?
“Harry,” it was Liam who was behind me. “We need to go.”
I sprung to my feet, “No!” I practically yelled. I couldn’t believe that they would try to get me to leave her. It made me so made.
“Harry,” Liam looked at me, concern in his eyes. “We all care about Sarah, but the doctor…”
I cut him off, “I don’t care what the doctor said! You know Sarah too Liam, and you know that she doesn’t quit. So I’m going to be here when she wakes up!”
“But what if she doesn’t?” his words were barely above a whisper, but I heard them.
“Shut up!” I screamed at him as tears streamed down my face. “You don’t know that! You don’t know…”
“Keep your curls on.”
I froze, my eyes wide. There was only person in the world that ever said that to me. I looked over at Sarah. She was looking up at me with half-opened eyelids. I felt more tears fall from my eyes as I moved toward her.
“Nurse! Nurse!” I could hear Niall yelling in the hall.
I sat back down and took her hand in mine.
“What did we agree on about the whole crying thing?” she mumbled softly.
“I know,” I said as I wiped my face with my free arm, “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine.” She gave me a weak smile.
“I’m just so glad you are awake.” I hold her hand against my cheek as I watched her.
“Ms. Collins,” I turned to the nurse that had called me. “It is so good to see that you are awake.”
“It’s good to be awake.” Sarah sighed at the nurse. The nurse smiled back at her. Sarah always had that effect on people.
“I’ll need you boys to leave for a few moments so I can examine Ms. Collins.”
I was reluctant to leave. I had just gotten Sarah back, but I needed to listen this time. It was so she could be checked out. I stood to my feet and followed the boys out of the room. My eyes landed on Liam as we all leaned against the walls outside the room.
“Hey Liam,” I said. He looked over at me. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.” He shook his as if he were shaking it off.
“No, it’s not,” I said, “I shouldn’t have gone off on you like that.”
He pushed off the wall and walked over to me, resting a hand on my shoulder, “Don’t worry about it, mate. I know you were worried about Sarah. I heard you talking to her earlier, that’s why none of us were in there for so long, I told the boys to give you some time and space with her.”
I looked at him. That was just like Liam, doing what was best for someone else.
“I’m all finished.” The nurse said as she walked out of Sarah’s room.
We all looked at her door for a minute. I think we were all debating what to do.
I looked at Liam, “Do you think that you could keep them out here for a bit?”
He looked at me a little shocked. A smile came to his face, “Sure thing.”
I took a deep breath before leaving my place against the wall, heading toward the door.
