Heartbreak Girl

~Chapter Two~

I frowned as I stared at my phone. Yet again, Shannon had to send me a disgusting ass picture with a stupid caption. This time, it was a meme of a girl crying saying "when you a vegan but you swallow his nut but that shit tastes like ham and now you don't know who you are anymore." Classy, Shannon. Real classy. How she and Gemma became friends, I don't know. How WE became friends was an even harder question to answer. My phone vibrated again and I picked it up, expecting a meme spam from Shannon only to see that no, Mel had texted me.

I'm outside was all it said. I got off the couch, expecting to go outside and greet her but Melanie was already coming inside. "Just...what the fuck?" she demanded. Tears were threatening to fall from her already tear streaked face.

"Mel, what's wrong?" I questioned.

She sat down on the couch and sarcastically rolled her eyes. "Niall's scheduling apparently", she scoffed, putting a hand over her mouth. Though she was trying not to show it, I knew her lips were trembling as she tried covering distress with anger. "You know what today is?"

"You and Niall's eight months", I answered.

"My best fucking friend knows but not my boyfriend!" she wailed, blinking back tears. She grinned, one of those hateful, twisted grins people get when their too drained to be anything but mad. "I'm tired of playing second best. Everything was fine, I didn't mind but THIS? This is the last straw."

"What happened?" I asked.

Whatever emotional dam Melanie had suddenly broke. "Niall FORGOT!" she wailed. She clutched at the throw pillow before taking the hand I offered. "We had plans. We were going to go out. And I waited and waited and he-he....HE FORGOT, HARRY!"

"Well, that's shit", I hissed, bringing her into a hug. "You deserve so much better than that. You're worth more than him, you know?"

"Not to him", she whimpered. "Obviously."

"Mel, there's a bajillion guys out there", I chuckled, rubbing her shoulders as I squeezed her. Maybe if I squeezed her tight enough, I'd be able to hug all her pieces back together. It always hurt seeing her like this. "And loads of them would just love to have a girl like you. Don't let one bad guy define how valuable you are. Niall's a right prick for forgetting you-"

"I broke up with him", she admitted.

"Well...that's good."

"Is it?"

I sighed and pulled back to stare at her. "Melanie, if you don't cut the dead ends off a plant, it won't thrive", I explained. "And that's exactly what you did. Niall was a dead branch that you snipped off."

"You're full of it."

"No, I'm being honest. Niall didn't deserve you if he's just going to forget-"

"It's worse than that. He didn't just forget. He IGNORED ME. I called and called. I left him a voicemail. He hasn't even answered that."

I scoffed. "Even better", I smirked. "You need someone who's there for you, someone who's going to pick up all your little shards of glass when you crack. Someone who will remember your eight days, eight months, and eight years. Someone who will answer their God damned phone!" I laughed. Melanie laughed too and I smiled. I did that; I made her laugh.

"Someone like you", she whispered.

"What?" I clearly didn't hear her right. Like me? Rubbish.

"Like you", she repeated. "You're always there, Hazza. Whenever I need someone, you're right there like some kind of fairy godfather."

"I'm not singing Bippity Boppity Boo", I stated.

"I don't want you to", she said. "You're just... Harry, can I like, try something?"

"What are you trying?" I wondered.

"Nothing bad, I promise." I nodded, bracing myself for whatever it was she wanted to try. Melanie stared at me for a moment, her big doe eyes taking me in before she rushed me. I didn't have time to react; she kissed me right there on my couch in the living room. Maybe kissing your best friend after they break up with someone is wrong but it felt so incredibly right. Melanie was a beautiful girl that had shown me her best and shown me her worst. Even at her worst, she was still amazing. As soon as she started deepening the kiss, I responded by running my tongue over her silk lower lip. She parted her mouth slightly so I could have a small taste of her. It was sweet but a bit minty, all deliciously wrapped up in her. Without a word, Melanie pulled away and looked sheepishly at the floor.

"Harry, can I ask you something serious?" Melanie inquired.

I nodded eagerly.

"Would you maybe want to go on a date sometime? Just us. As maybe, more than friends?"

My head began spinning with a million and twenty ideas. The park, the carnival, a picnic, a concert, the theatre, home made dinner and video games. Thankfully, my mouth spluttered out the only thing I needed to say. "Of course." Melanie beamed, all traces of Niall's selfishness removed from her face. "I'll pick you up tomorrow at seven. Is that okay?"

"That's perfect", she smiled.

I tried keeping my cool instead of letting my emotions come bursting out. I'd just cinched a date with Melanie. What could possibly be better?
