We Took A Chance

The end of my shift on Monday couldn't come any sooner. Tomorrow was my first day of school and I wanted to go home and prepare. Niall came this morning with that guy Jeff and ordered a coffee. I felt a bit disappointed that he didn't ask me to lunch. I know it's not likely he'll ever ask me again, much less two days in the span of three. I still hoped, though.
As soon as the clock hit 12, I was removing my apron and handing the register over to Ezra.

"You're in a hurry?" he questioned as I quickly punched in my card to clock out.
"Not really, but tomorrow is my first day of class and I'm pretty nervous." I admit, leaning against the outside of the counter.
"You'll do fine!" he assured and I thanked him before exiting the cafe onto the cool London streets. I was about to turn the corner to UCL when I could feel my phone ring.

"Hello?" I answered.
"Honey, you would not guess! I was at the grocery store when I saw your das with his new fling! Ugh they made me sick." She ranted, clearly upset.
"I'm sorry, mom. I don't know what to say." I suddenly felt very uncomfortable.
"Ugh, Zoe, she looks like such a homewrecker! And they were shopping for wine! Your dad hates wine."
"Mom, I have to go." I wasn't in the mood for this.
"Fine, Zoe. We can talk about this homewrecker later."

I know my mom is clearly upset, but I couldn't help and notice she didn't even ask about what was going on with me. Everything was all about her and the divorce. A constant reminder on why I'll never allow myself to be in that situation. Can't divorce if I never marry.
I was approaching the halls when my phone buzzed in my pocket again.

Niall: Good luck at school tomorrow !
Zoe: Thank you.
Niall: Are you working ?
Zoe: I actually just got out. Walking up the steps of the halls.
Niall: Sweet ! Any plans for the rest of the day?
Zoe: Not really. I was just planning on preparing everything for tomorrow.
Niall: I have some people over at my house. Just a couple friends. Do you think you'd want to come ?

My heart raced at this. He wants to hang out with me? Besides who would be these friends of his? Surely I'd have to talk to them and I really don't want to do that. I already told him I didn't have plans I can't use that as an excuse.

Zoe: Ummm.. I don't know. I'm not usually good around people. Sorry.
Niall: It's just 3 more people Zoe. We'll be watching movies that's all.
Zoe: Ok I will go. Where do you live? I'll catch a bus.
Niall: Nonsense. I'll send Jeff to pick you up. In 30 ok?
Zoe: Ok, I'll be ready.

Once again, I immediately regret my decision.

Notes

Sorry for the crappy chapter. I know it's mostly dialogue and text but I promise the next one will be awesome!

I am asking for feedback from my readers, though. Do you guys prefer longer chapters like the last one or shorter ones like this one? Obviously longer chapters take longer to write so less frequent updates where shorter chapters can mean more frequent updates. So let me know what you think!
